This is for people who have experienced Audio on both iOS and Android.Ever felt like this “Boy, the sound quality in iPhones is actually much better than stock android phones. And what headphones as well” or wondered “Why does my headphone sounds better on my friend’s iOS device than on my Android?”If you ever felt like this, do you know why is it so?This is because of DACs (Digital to Analog converters). DAC is a system that converts your digital signals into analog signals embedded as Integrated circuits in the processor of your phones.In smartphones, Audio is converted into a digital copy(MP3 and other formats like AAC) because our smartphones can’t store analog signals which are passed through the 3.5 mm headphone jack or the iPhone’s lightning port. We can’t hear digital audio obviously and our smartphones can’t read analog signals, so on playing music, it has to pass through a DAC for human understandable format. Basically, any device that can play sounds, has an inbuilt DAC and amplifier.Now majority of Android phones use the default DAC present in the processor being used on the phone like Qualcomm or Snapdragon’s processors, which when compared to Apple’s DAC is subpar. Why?Apple designs their processors like A10, A11 and A11 Bionic and thus has custom DAC which gives out much better audio output than majority of the Android phones. Although some android phones do have custom DACs build for their smartphones like LG V30. Audiophiles iterate that, it’s sound output is even better than iPhone’s.Now what about speakers of phones?Sweet answer, it uses an amplifier. An amplifier makes an analog signal so intense that it’s louder when coming out of a speaker. Bigger speakers like Bose and JBL have extremely intense amplifiers, and thus the result is a great crystal-clear sound output coupled with a custom designed DAC. Here again, building an amplifier is easy but building a good amplifier is not.

These rims are both exactly perpendicular to the vertical direction, which is to say they are both perfectly horizontal lines at slightly different elevations. We see that the line of sight to D is the point on the horizon exactly below DLI. Remember the two geometrical diagrams are the side-view of the picture displayed at the beginning of this article.Here is the quite simple geometry:Observe right angle triangle ACD with its right angle at D. We know that angle DAC equals angle DCE, because they are both complementary to angle DCB.So to find angle DCE, we need to know angle DAC. AD is Earth’s radius, which is half its diameter, or 40000 km divided by 2π, or 6366km. As the elevation of C can be estimated by 360 meter, given where the horizon should be for a flat Earth and where that line would cross the Empire State Building, we conclude that AC equals 6366.36. Thereforecos(DAC) = 6366/6366.36 = 0.9999435and so DAC=0.61 degree or just over half a degree, which is the subtended angle of the diameter of the sun or moon, which is pretty accurate looking at the picture!
