Intellectual Boredom. I was on Spring Break, spending time with my children and wife and doing chores around the house and everything I enjoy doing. But my family doesn’t like to talk about politics. An event that would bring the cinematic world together.A moment that saw a previously complacent actor reclaim his status as an indisputable elite.It was called The McConaissance – the metaphorical rebirth of Matthew McConaughey.It began with The Lincoln Lawyer and peaked with the one-two punch of True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club.A one-scene appearance in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street was flanked by those two projects.That scene is the all-encompassing radiance of the McConaissance distilled into a brief moment.In the scene, a young and not yet disillusioned Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) is having lunch with Mark Hanna, a chest-thumping Matthew McConaughey.A quick detour – the thumping and humming is part of McConaghey’s warm-up. Including it in the film was DiCaprio’s idea.The scene is only six minutes long, but McConaughey spends every single second of those six minutes channelling verve and electricity.Every word out of his mouth is an instant home-run, his line readings are incredible.He delivers Hanna’s treatise on hedonism with the sort of nonchalant charisma that has been a part of his arsenal from the very beginning.Well, Hector, here’s the game plan. You’re going to bring us two Absolut martinis. And then precisely seven and a half minute after that, you’re going to bring us two more.And then, two more after that every five minutes until one of us passes the fuck out.The raw and unbridled magnetism McCounaghey projects in this scene is remarkable. He radiates confidence and authority.And although it’s designed to be that way, he annihilates DiCaprio from the screen; it’s as if he doesn’t exist.It’s McCounaghey’s glorious six-minute show. He is straight fire. Everything else in his vicinity is blurred, there’s only McConaughey.It remains one of the finest scenes in the film, and certainly one of the most re-watchable. Six minutes. That’s all it took for him to leave an indelible mark on the project.This was peak McCounaghey, smack dab in the middle of the highest crest of the McConnoiasance.He did everything right in this scene.One could even say that it was alright, alright, alright.
