I currently work in a prison in Texas. So I can speak from a correctional officer’s point of view, and a little about the system.Prison is not easy, it is hard. I am not going to pretend otherwise. For a new prisoner, what is liable to happen is this:First he will go to one of the intake units. This is where all offenders newly sentenced to TDCJ arrive and are processed. He will probably undergo a series of examinations regarding basic medical health, schooling, psych etc. Depending on results it will classify him as to what jobs he can do and what level of supervision he requires while incarcerated.After that he will be assigned to one of the facilities in Texas. If you are lucky it will be close by. If you are unlucky it will be across the state from where you now live.The food is sufficient for basic human needs. In other words it is edible, but that really is about the best that can be said. Having a four year sentence, he is probably going to get sent to a dormitory style unit. This is a unit where each individual shares a large room with anything up to 80 individuals, possibly on bunk beds. The mattresses they pass out are thin (about 2″ thick generally), and he will have one pillow, 2 white uniforms, maximum of 2 pairs of shoes, 1 mattress cover, 1 white sheet and 2 blankets. Everything he owns while incarcerated has to fit into a 1.75 cubic feet storage box, which will probably be under his bunk.If he is lucky, he will be assigned to a unit that has air conditioning throughout the building. Generally though he will not be that lucky, and so his sleeping area is probably going to be hot during the summer months and cold during the winter months.He will be able to purchase items on commissary, Ramen noodles being the main item that offenders purchase. These are used as currency to buy things from others or pay off debts to other offenders. You will be able to put money on his books so that he can make store.So on the downside, as a summary… It is going to be dirty, noisy, uncomfortable, with a basic minimum in health care and food.So what about the positives? There are lots of programs available in order to improve skills. There are educational classes that he can enroll in, and vocational classes as well. There are lots of ways in which he can improve himself while inside.Some pieces of advice that you can give him though.Do not ever, ever, ever, get a tattoo while in prison. Tattoo guns are homemade affairs that utilize items like staples for needles. They will use the one “needle” to tattoo multiple offenders. HIV, Hepatitis and other blood borne pathogens are very common in prison because of this.Do not ever, ever, ever accept a gift from another offender while incarcerated. This is where a large percentage of PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) violations start. Accepting a gift leaves you beholden to the gift giver which can lead down a very dangerous route.Wear boxers while in the showers. Again, this is to help with PREA issues and safety.If threatened, extorted, sexually harassed or just believe that your life is in danger. REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY. The correctional officers have a duty of care. If the officer does not seem to be taking it seriously, then move up the chain of command as quickly as you can.Reports of sexual harassment and assault can be made in many ways, they can be reported verbally or in writing to any staff member, OIG, Grievance, the Unit Major, TDCJ ombudsman etc. Reports can be anonymous or even from a third party source, including but not limited to: Friends and family of offenders and lawyers. All allegations will be taken seriously and investigated. Those found guilty will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.Staff members have a duty to report all allegations immediately, and to take immediate steps to protect the alleged victim from the alleged assailant. Any staff member who is found to have not done everything they could to protect the alleged victim from the alleged assailant can be held criminally liable and even face imprisonment themselves.Stay clean, shower every day. Clean your bunk and cell/dorm if you have to in order to keep down the spread of disease. It generally takes around 3–5 days for medical to see you once you have put an I-60 in.I-60s and Grievances are the best tools you have to get what you need. Utilize them.Some advice for you as well.Visit as often as you can, this helps his morale and gives you some peace-of-mind. Visitation is normally on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am–5pm. However some units may have other times, so please check. If you are traveling from over 250 miles (as the crow flies) you are eligible for a special visit that lasts 4 hours instead of two hours. However this has to be applied for normally by Thursday of the week you intend to visit.Write as often as you can. Again, this helps his morale and makes the time served easier. Do not send semi-naked pictures in - they get traded around - but family pictures are great. If you wish to send him books etc, they have to come from an approved vendor such as Amazon. You cannot send him any packages directly, so ensure you use a vendor for the greatest chance of delivery.If you believe that your husband is being threatened, extorted, sexually harassed etc., REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY. Anyone can report something like that and an investigation will be immediately launched.Put money on his books regularly. This helps immensely with so many things. Especially for him to be able to write home and call home.Finally I would like to say this: People never realize just how important family is to someone incarcerated. A family that stands 1000% behind the individual incarcerated, encouraging them to make the necessary changes in their life. This gives the greatest chance that the incarcerated individual exits the prison system and never returns.
