He played in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins , Washington Capitals , Buffalo Sabres , Ottawa Senators , Phoenix Coyotes and the Montreal Canadiens .

From the 1942–43 through 1966–67 seasons, those were the only six teams in the NHL, but they were more like the “surviving six” after some earlier franchises folded.Ottawa Senators (1917–34): charter members of the NHL. Finley grew weary of the bidding war for talent with the WHA and sold to investor Mel Swig, who moved the team to Cleveland. After three uninspired seasons as the Cleveland Barons, the team folded after the 1977–78 season.The lasting legacy of the Seals might be the trade that they made with Montreal leading up to the 1970 NHL draft: desperate for cash and picks, they agreed to trade Ernie Lancombe plus their 1971 first-round pick to Montreal, in exchange for Montreal’s 1970 first round pick plus cash.
