I frankly think that people whining are selfish and myopic. They’re usually clueless of how Hollywood works and so idealistic that they assume their values on why and how things get done are axiomatic and universal. Once was the time that the theaters were basically sacred places that were patrolled by evil-eyed ushers that would throw your ass out (I’d know, I was a punkass kid at one stage of my life). Today, with the fear of looking racist for kicking out the wrong person or the fear of getting attacked by an angry guest means that theaters don’t do shit.The high speed internet which allows streaming of films and thus companies like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime destroy a once rich and wealthy marketplace.Warner Bros. has been hounding the Wachowskis for TWENTY FUCKING YEARS now. They’ve offered them unlimited financial resources, access to all of their pre and post-production assets. The Wachowskis have said no for various reasons. Hopefully they’ve matured a bit in their storytelling (I doubt it, that argument for another time) and won’t insult their audience by talking down to them (that story for another day as well). They’ve been striking out on Potter and DC. They’ve got a huge victory on their hands with their horror franchise (The Conjuring) and they’ve righted the ship over at DC (with the acquisition of JJ Abrams and the wildly popular Aquaman). They have a LOT of work to do and they need this to work. To make it work, look for stuff they know people will want. No, to a reboot. But know what streaming service needs a pilot scifi franchise?Peacock? Comcast, NBC/Universal already has the rebooted Battlestar Galacitca. (Yes it does, em-effers. Google that shit.)Prime? Amazon already has The Expanse, Man in the HIgh Castle and The Boys. (Good Omens and Carnival Row are fantasy.)Netflix? They already have Lost In Space (yuck), Altered Carbon and Stranger Things (more like fantasy but it skirts the boundary).All Access? Fat chance. The CBS people are quite literally building an EMPIRE OF STAR TREK with like a half dozen series in production.Disney+? Puh-leeze. The Mouse House has a zillion MCU and Star Wars shows in the works. (Yeah, SW is another one that crosses the fantasy scifi border.)Now, of course, HBO Max (which is AT&T / TimeWarner’s streaming service) will have its share of WestWorld, DC and Potter series (and I’m willing to bet a horror series in the Insidious universe). BUT, they already own Babylon 5! I’d like to see HBO run NOT with a reboot but a sequel series. Something like “Babylon 5: The Next Generation” (which should NOT be its title).

Because while Netflix (like Sears, MySpace, AT&T and many others) may have been one of the firsts and the biggest, they were merely a sign of the time. Netflix could last or end up like the rest.With or without Netflix, you have Prime, Hulu, WB’s service, All Access, Disney Streaming, and literally dozens more. Oh, and that’s so cute that you think Netflix makes all those shows. Shucks. That kind of plucky innocence is endearing. But no. House of Cards and the Marvel shows, those were all proposed and made while looking for a buyer to distribute them. Without Netflix, you’d still get those from someone else.
