My husband and I had two occurrences of identity theft. We already used some safeguards and have since monitored our assets using these security measures.Review your checking and savings accounts and credit card debit/credit accounts REGULARLY online. By pulling up your accounts every couple of days, new entries are easier to spot. When someone has your information such as pin numbers or account numbers for your debit and credit card accounts, they may attempt to make a small purchase such as $1 or more to see if that goes through. When it does, they ratchet up the amount to hundreds of dollars. If you see this happen on a checking account, line of credit account, or debit/credit card synced to other accounts, close accounts immediately and re-open new ones.This suggestion is hard for people to follow through on, but it’s one of the most important. Use ONE computer as a dedicated device to make ALL online purchases from Amazon, Wal-Mart, and other vendors. Use the same computer to conduct online banking, PayPal transfers, etc. THE REASON: You don’t open emails or surf websites. People trying to get your assets attach malware to emails or embed it on websites to obtain your personal information (birthdates, SS#s, addresses, etc.). Use a tablet, laptop, or other PC to check emails and surf.Never enter your social security number and other personal information on online applications and other forms. I don’t understand why people find this hard to do. I glance at the number and silence the phone. Those callers NEVER leave a message. I only answer calls from individuals in my contact list. If they’re in my phone, their phone number and name appear when they call. If it’s a stranger, nothing appears but the phone number. If someone REALLY needs to reach you, they’ll leave a message on your voice mail.Make sure you instruct credit card companies to monitor unusual activity on your accounts. Give them your phone number so they can call and verify anything that looks suspicious - as it happens.Banks are getting better at establishing protocols on accounts so you can’t close an account online and transfer it to another account. I can transfer between accounts online, but I can’t close or set up an account online.Reduce your credit card limits to no more than $1,000. Why in the world would you have a credit card limit for $5,000, $10,000 or more? That’s just asking for trouble.Since we live in an electronic world, there’s no need to stop conducting business electronically.
