Why didn't Tolkien spend much time on individual pure-blood Vanyarin elves, since they were higher elves than the Noldor?

I think this is a really interesting question, because the Vanyar play such a limited role in the story. We know less about them than about any other Elven kindred. We of course know a great deal about the Noldor and the Teleri. The Sindar and Silvan Elves are all offshoots of the Teleri who did not make the journey to Valinor. The majority of the Noldor came to Middle Earth as Exiles, and we know their story. But the Vanyar went to and stayed in Valinor. We are told they participated in the War of Wrath and that they were the Elves who were closest to Manwe and Varda. But we know little to nothing about their doings. Their stories have not been told. Why? Why did Tolkien invent them if he wasn’t going to tell us more about them?Well, for one thing, Tolkien had a thing for the number 3, especially when it came to the Peoples of Middle Earth. Consider:There are three kindreds of Elves.Three Houses of the Edain (the faithful houses of Men.)Three groups of Hobbits (Stoors, Fallohides and Harfoots.)Three Elven Rings which were pure and untouched by Sauron. Now, the number three has a lot of significance to many ancient cultures and religions — not the least of which was Tolkien’s own Catholicism (the three persons of the Trinity.)Another number of ancient significance is the number 7, and there are Seven houses of Dwarves, and Seven rings given to them. Many cultures and religions invest both the number 3 and the number 7 with mystical significance. Tolkien was of course aware of this, as he drew on many religious and cultural traditions to create his world. So his choice of these numbers is not accidental.I don’t believe the fact that there are three kindreds of elves, three faithful houses of Men, and three lines of Hobbits are accidental or incidental. Tolkien wanted there to be three. He NEEDED there to be three. Three is the number of the Trinity. In ancient Egypt, three was a number that signified completion. In ancient Greece, the Pythagoreans, a religious/philosophical school influenced by the mathematician Pythagoras, thought 3 was the first true number, and a symbol of harmony, wisdom and understanding. In Norse mythology, a symbol of three interlocking triangles (each of which, of course, has three sides) was closely associated with the god Odin.So three is important. Three kindreds of Elves. Three Houses of the Edain. Three groupings of Hobbits. Perhaps the Vanyar exist mainly because he wanted there to be three— NEEDED there to be three — and he just didn’t have very much for the third kindred to do.But there’s another possibility. The Vanyar, of the three kindreds, are the most faithful to the Valar. They never waiver. The Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri are all summoned to Aman; some of the Teleri refuse to start out on the journey; others start out but never complete the journey, and still others make it all the way. The Noldor all make it to Aman, but about nine tenths of them rebel against the Valar and return to Middle Earth against their warning. Only the Vanyar all set out, all finish the journey and all stay in Aman and remain faithful. And they are the least involved in the story. What is Tolkien trying to say here? It’s possible that he’s trying to say that a world of perfect obedience to what is morally right would be so free of conflict that there wouldn’t be much in the way of good stories to tell. It’s possible he’s saying that the suffering of the Noldor and the various branches of the Teleri that remain in Middle Earth are a function of their separation from paradise or the will of Iluvatar or the Valar. The Vanyar never separate themselves from these things, and so they endure no suffering we know of in Valinor, though they do take part in the struggle against evil in the War of Wrath (in which they are being obedient servants of the forces of good.)It may be that the elves’ struggles and conflicts are a function of never fully answering the call (for the Sindarin and Silvan elves, offshoots of the Teleri) and their deliberate disobedience (for the Noldor). And that’s what makes their story worth telling. I’m not sure that the Vanyar represent obedient Catholics or Christians in this concept, but perhaps something closer to un-fallen humans. In Christian theology, humanity is flawed and sinful because of an original choice to disobey God. The Vanyar, as elves who never disobeyed the Valar or Iluvatar, might be a closer analogue to humanity before the fall than just particularly obedient humans. They live in paradise, and their lives are mostly untroubled by the suffering of the outside world. But they also don’t seem to achieve very much that is of interest. So perhaps Tolkien is saying that mankind may have erred in committing original sin — eating from the fruit of the tree of knowledge, according to the biblical story — but whatever pain and suffering resulted from that disobedience, the great accomplishments of human society over time ALSO resulted from that act. If we were still living in perfect harmony in paradise, there might be no pain and suffering, but there’d also be no stories worth telling.Or, maybe he just never got around to writing more about the Vanyar.

What was your best waiver claim in fantasy sports?

You never have one single claim that knocks it out of the park it is a series of them working together. My favorite series of interlocking moves, however was the one two punch of Kirk Cousins and Jordan Reed in 2015 when I won my first and only fantasy football league title.
