PDF Editor FAQ

Do male Marines have the same standards as female Marines?

No, in two ways - the weight/height ratios and BMI requirements are different for women than men - which makes sense.Further, the PFT exercises and scores are different, as are the IST requirements when joining. Female Marines don’t do pull-ups, but perform a flexed-arm hang instead. The run scoring is different, as the chart below shows. CFT scores are calculated differently, as well.USMC PFT Score Chartshttp://www.hqmc.marines.mil/Portals/61/Docs/HQ%20Svc%20BN/MCPFP%2017-26[1].pdf

What would the IQ be of the most intelligent students at the most elite universities in the world (MIT, Princeton, Caltech, etc)? In other words, the smartest students at the best universities?

(and I’m also a clinical psychologist specializing in giftedness and multiple exceptionalities — IQ testing is part of what I do for a living.) This is a massively oversimplified question and it’s unclear what the point of the answer would be. IQ is not a single unitary construct, and it’s defined differently on different tests, and virtually all of the people attending elite universities will be people whose scores are so far out on the tails of what those tests can measure, whose representation in the norming samples is so small, that so much depends on specifics item type and item content, that the error bars get so wide, that precise numbers lose meaning. If you must have numbers, we’ll count in terms of standard deviations from the mean (z-scores). It’s kind of like “z+one, z+two, z+many.” Norms tables for most tests today do allow scores to go up to z+4 (160 on most modern scoring systems), but not generally beyond. But you cannot get enough humans into a norming sample to justify even a claim of reliability above z+2 (130 on most modern scoring systems), and claims of reliability above z+3 (145) are truly nonsensical. Extrapolation in statistics is very, very fraught. If you actually look in the norms tables and see how far one raw-score point here or there can swing a standard score out in those ranges, you’ll see that the space between z+2 and z+4 is very, very fuzzy. But don’t take my word for it — even the publishers of the tests admit that the tests are really only designed to give detailed information from z-2 to z+2.While I cannot speak in detail to my esteemed colleagues at Princeton and Caltech, I can say with confidence that a person who can ceiling almost any IQ test would be pretty run-of-the-mill at MIT. Z+many is like having a nose. We all have one and they might be different shapes and sizes but they all breathe and sometimes they all sneeze and no one really cares.(And before you make any stupid accusations of sour grapes… yes, I have always been one of those people who break norms charts, and yes, I have data to back that claim up. Yet I am very, very ordinary, nothing even remotely special, as compared to my peers at MIT. And I continue to be delighted to be able to work and play with people whose minds are like that. Really, from a cultural perspective, MIT folks don’t care who is “smartest” or anything else like that. We just like having friends who get our jokes and who have cool ideas and who don’t dump all the work on us when we’re doing a group project. Maybe that’s the answer to your question — how smart are we? Smart enough not to ask questions like this one.)
