PDF Editor FAQ

After coronavirus, should health care be free?

No.Health care is not now, nor will it ever be free anywhere in the world. It’s $&*^ing expensive. It’s expensive as HELL, and it should be.You know about a year ago, it was April 4th, I wrote an answer about this subject.Chris O'Leary's answer to Why should I pay for other people's healthcare when I can barely afford my own?In it, I examined universal health care, how other countries do it, and how much that would cost us.Canada pays about $6600 Canadian, which works out to about $4700 American per capita for its Universal health care coverage system.See? THAT’S NOT FREE! Canadian citizens pay taxes, and those taxes go to cover the cost of health care for all her citizens. Now, we have a hell of a lot more people than Canada. Last year when I did this calculation, the exchange rate was a bit higher, the dollar was a bit stronger, so the exchange rate came out to $5500 per capita. Covering all US citizens, in the same way, would cost the US by that calculation $1.8Trillion per year.Sounds like a lot, doesn't it, that number they scare you with?Especially when they do what they always do with it, use the 10-year figure. They don’t tell you they’re using the 10-year figure, they just tell you that covering all Americans would cost $18Trillion dollars. You’ve heard that figure right?Did it scare you?Do you know how much we’re already paying for health care in this country?$672B on Medicare$565B on Medicaid$79B on the VA’s budget for health care. All of which would be rolled into a health care system that covered all Americans. You heard me.In other words we are already spending the $1.3T of the $1.8T we would need to cover everyone. In other words, a Medicare For All system wouldn’t be that big scary number, it would cost about $500B more than we are already spending on Health care.Did you notice we just came up with $2.5T out of nowhere to do COVID-19 relief? There are 142 Million taxpayers in the United States, most of whom are paid biweekly or twice monthly. Meaning that breaks down to $137 per paycheck on average, not even taking into account the fact that the vast majority of the extra revenue needed would be happily paid in corporate taxes by companies who no longer had to spend vast sums of money on employee health care, which for the record, THEY ABSOLUTELY CONSIDER PART OF YOUR COMPENSATION. That “my employer pays for my health care” argument is bullshit. Your employer pays you for your services. Part of what they pay you is your health care coverage, and if you don’t think the finance department has an exact dollar value on that down to the penny, you’ve never met an accountant. After Coronavirus, should healthcare be free? No. We should have before, should now, and should in the future be paying a single-payer whose purpose is not profit. It is the profit motive of the middleman that causes the average American to pay more for health care than anyone else in the world. Here's how much the average American spends on health careCoronavirus just exposed the sad truth of how insane our employer-provided health care is, considering employment is not a guarantee, as tens of millions of Americans learned in the last 6 weeks, unfortunately during a time when it would be really nice not to worry about their *&%^ing health care.

In the US, why is it not “socialism” if everyone pays for the military (through taxes) but it IS “socialism” if everyone pays (through taxes) for universal healthcare like all the other advanced societies in the world?

Our military is a government run single payer program. Exactly what is proposed by some for our health care system. So are our police and fire departments, courts and public education for that matter.Technically, neither our military or a government run tax-payer funded health care system would qualify as socialism, which is an economic system where the government runs/owns ALL the means of production. A socialist economy doesn’t have much if any private business enterprises. That’s obviously not the case in the US with thousands of private businesses. And that would still be the case if health care was a government run single payer program. We’d still have lots of private businesses. What we have in the US is a combination of private businesses and government programs. Government programs should not be confused with socialism which is an economic system different from capitalism. All wealthy capitalistic democracies have government programs and services. That doesn’t make them socialist or their economic system socialism. And all other wealthy democracies have universal health care run by or controlled by their government for the benefit of their citizens. But you make a great point, one I have also made a number of times in my posts. The real question is do we want a taxpayer funded single payer health care systemI’ve studied the issue of health care systems, and observed what they do in other wealthy democracies, and my answer is hell yes we do want a single payer government run health care system. Just don’t call it socialism as that imo scares some people. But I get your point and agree with it.

What is the difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary health care?

The prevention of disease, diagnosis, treatment of illness, injury in human beings form the subject matter of health care. Those involved in providing health care include medical practitioners, nurses, psychologists, dentists, midwives, pharmacists and so on. There are also the paraprofessionals who provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative care services.Health care delivery includes providing primary care, secondary care and tertiary care.Primary Health Care: (PHC) They are the basic first level of contact between individuals and families with the health system. The general practitioners, the family physician, the physiotherapist are the usual primary health care providers. Immunisation, basic curative care services, maternal and child health services, prevention of diseases are the type of services provided by PHC's. Family planning, health education, provision of food and nutrition and adequate supply of safe drinking water may also be included in their services. In India, a network of sub centres and PHC's work in rural areas to provide primary health care. Family welfare centres provide such services in the urban areas. The staff in a PHC includes a medical officer, a staff nurse, the pharmacist and other paramedical support staff.Secondary Health Centre: Health care services, at such centres are provided by medical specialists. They may not have first contact with patients. Depending on the policies of the National Health System, patients may access these services through physician referral or self referral.Secondary health care providers include cardiologists, urologists, dermatologists and other such specialists. The health care services include acute care, short period stay in a hospital emergency department for brief but serious illness. There may be secondary care providers who do not work in hospitals - psychiatrists, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists and so on.In India, the District Hospitals and Community Health Centres at the block level are examples of Secondary Health Centres within the public health system.Tertiary Health Centre: This is a specialised consultative health care for inpatients. The patients are admitted into these centres on a referral from primary or secondary health professionals. Tertiary health care is provided in a facility that have personnel and facilities for advanced medical investigation and treatment. Services provided include cancer management, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery and a host of complex medical and surgical interventions. Advanced diagnostic support services and specialised intensive care which cannot be provided by primary and secondary health centres are available at the tertiary health centres. In India tertiary care services under the public health system, is provided by medical colleges and advanced medical research institutes.Source: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary HealthCare
