PDF Editor FAQ

Why did Sauron attempt to hide as a necromancer? Did he believe a necromancer would not be taken seriously as a threat to the people of Middle-earth? Did the White Council not consider a necromancer a threat?

Sauron didn’t wander around the neighbourhood of Dol Guldur introducing himself to his neighbours as a necromancer. He didn’t say to people “Oh no, I’m not Sauron the Deceiver, the Dark Lord of Mordor, the Abhorred Dread, the Lord of Werewolves, the Master of Treachery and Lord of Barad-dur. Oh no, I’m not him. I’m just your friendly neighbourhood Necromancer”.Rather, Necromancer of Dol Guldur was a name given to him by others - in particular, the Wise (the leading elves and Istarii) - as they didn’t know his true name / nature for around 1800 years. The necromancer established himself in Dol Guldur around 1050 Third Age (TA). At first, his identity was completely unknown; as his power and influence grew, the wise thought that maybe it was one of the Nazgul. As Dol Guldur became even more powerful, the Wise started to suspect that it was Sauron himself - however, this wasn’t confirmed until Gandalf went in secret to Dol Guldur in 2850 TA (this was his second attempt - he had gone there in 2063 TA, but the necromancer had fled before him, abandoning Dol Guldur for 400 years).

What is Dol Guldur's history?

Dol Guldur was once a stronghold of Sauron when he was known as the Necromancer. It is located in Mirkwood and means “Hill of Black Magic”. It also went by the name Amon Lanc at one time, meaning “Naked Hill”. This was its name at the time when Mirkwood was known as the Greenwood. The naked hill was called this because no trees grew on its summit. All of this history takes place in the Third Age…Dol Guldur - By TitusLunter1050A shadow falls on Greenwood, and Men begin to refer to it as Mirkwood.1100The Council of the Wise believes that one of Sauron’s chief servants, the Nazgûl, has made a stronghold at Dol Guldur and is spreading its evil power. They do not take any action.2063The Council suspects that the Necromancer may actually be Sauron. Gandalf goes to Dol Guldur and Sauron flees to avoid being fully identified before he is ready.2460What is known as the Watchful Peace ends. This was a relatively peaceful period of 4 centuries from the year 2063. This was when Sauron was known as the Necromancer, who had fled but returned with strength in 2460.2845Thráin is imprisoned in Dol Guldur and the final ring of the Dwarves is taken from him in torment.2850Gandalf returns to Dol Guldur and confirms that the Necromancer of old is in fact Sauron. He learns that Sauron is gathering the Rings of Power, seeking any news of the Master Ring, and of Isildur’s Heir.2851The Council meet and Gandalf attempts to convince them that they need to attack Dol Guldur. Saruman, the Chief of the Istari, overrules Gandalf and begins his own investigation near the Gladden Fields for the One Ring.2939Saruman learns that Sauron’s own servants are searching near Gladden Fields in the Anduin, but doesn’t tell the Council.2941The Council meets and Saruman now says that they do need to attack Dol Guldur. This is of course due to his own fear that Sauron will find what he seeks in the Anduin. Sauron has now gathered his strength and abandons Dol Guldur to return to his tower in Mordor.2951Sauron sends three of the Ringwraiths to Dol Guldur to reoccupy it. This includes Khamûl, who is Second of the Ringwraiths under the Witch-king.3009The strength and danger of Dol Guldur grow and Elrond sends for Arwen to return from Lorien to Imladris. The shadow grows over the eastern lands and mountains.3019(11 March)Dol Guldur assaults Lorien for the first time. The assaults were driven back due to the valour of the Elves and power that Galadriel held over her land.(15 March)Dol Guldur once again attacks Lorien, and Thranduil’s land is attacked in the Battle Under the Trees.(22 March)The third and final assault on Lorien from Dol Guldur. Once again the power of Galadriel and the Elves drives the assault back.(25 March)Dol Guldur loses its great strength as Sauron and the Ringwraiths are defeated with the Downfall of Barad-dur.With the fall of the Dark Tower, Celeborn came forth with a host of Lorien over the Anduin in many boats. There they took Dol Guldur and Galadriel threw down its walls and laid bare its pits. It was at this moment that the forest was finally cleansed of the mire of Dol Guldur. We aren’t told an awful lot about Dol Guldur, and we have to remember that the identity of the Necromancer as Sauron was a later decision by Tolkien. Even the assaults on Lorien from Dol Guldur are mere footnotes and we have little to read about when it comes to Sauron’s home away from home.

My employer sent me home without pay for 2 weeks because of a coronavirus scare. I filed unemployment for those 2 weeks, but my employer is claiming unemployment fraud. What am I to do?

Christopher Richards’ answer largely applies to the US (or at least, California and New York where I’m most familiar with the labor laws). You ideally have documents telling you to stay home and that it would be unpaid. Barring that, the suggestion (if you have direct deposit) that your bank won’t show your pay for the two weeks is good evidence. If you’re paid by check, it’s a bit stickier. Obviously, your lack of a deposit isn’t conclusive in that case. Here, the Dept of Labor will demand that the employer prove that they did pay you and in a way that satisfies a payroll obligation. The folks at DOL are pretty smart, so if the employer comes up with two checks you supposedly cashed at some odd place and signatures that don’t quite look like yours, they might find themselves on the end of a fraud case.(Example: why did you cash these two checks at Slick Willie’s Check Store and pay a 10% fee when you have a perfectly good bank account? DOL is going to have a hard time believing that you came up with a brilliant plan to screw them out of two weeks’ unemployment.)Now I have to ask one thing: does your employer normally have a one- or two-week unpaid shut down each year? If so, DOL might have to sustain the unpaid part since the employer could contend that they merely shifted the normal unpaid shutdown to “now.” Still, I doubt a charge of fraud would stick against you; at best, if this is the case, it’s an honest mistake. But then, it’s on their part too for failure to make clear that this was the annual shutdown.I don’t think you have much to worry about, but be sure you’re in contact with the Dept of Labor and that you promptly respond to questions and info requests. My other concern is over an employer that would accuse someone of unemployment fraud — that’s a very serious charge that might even come with jail time.I’d let DOL handle it for the most part unless they advise you to get private counsel. But I’d also be looking for ways to get as far away from that employer as you can. Don’t waste your time thinking how to get back at them — that’s at best a no win and often the employer wins due to having more resources.
