PDF Editor FAQ

What did you do after leaving the hospital to ensure you wouldn't have to go back? What did you work on to build resiliency?

I actually began to hate PICU. I hated the pins drilled in my head. I hated the monitors.I turned that hate into a competition: me vs the AVM. Every time I failed to do something on my discharge checklist (eg walk, keep food down etc), it was AVM: 1 point. I couldn’t handle being a bunch of 0’s.I just felt annoyed and made it a competition with myself. I literally fell down and had to walk again. It was extremely frustrating and dented my pride. I am a very prideful person. And that’s how I get through pretty much anything. If I meet a goal…Olivia: point 1.If I don’t get it the first time, then I try again. I hate being down points. And what I learned in the hospital is that you are never trapped even if you feel that way. No matter how oppressively cornered you are, you could turn and start clawing away at the corner as an exit strategy. You are never trapped. There is always a way.Unless you don’t want a way out. Which is sometimes how it is for people’s weary souls. And I respect that, too.

Have you ever experienced child-swapping at a hospital after birth, and what happened when you found out?

My oldest son was born 5 weeks premature and, a few hours after he was born, was whisked away to a neonatal intensive hospital across town, better able to handle his needed level of care. It was 1988 and mothers still spent days in the hospital after a birth so I was in one hospital and my son was in another. They gave me “privileges” for a family member to take me to visit daily and come back each evening. Over the course of those few days my son took many “turns for the worse” and we were not sure we would even be taking our precious little one home. The answer to this question though is in the last day I was at “my” hospital. They would not discharge me until they had “checklisted” all the baby care items on their list including changing a diaper and bathing a baby. So, there I was, sobbing uncontrollably while bathing someone else's’ baby they had “borrowed” for the teaching. I still wonder if the other mother had any idea how her son was used that day. Different times, for sure. Our son ended up spending two more weeks in two different hospitals and gratefully, grew up into an amazing being with no issues from being born prematurely.

When a fighter pilot ejects, are proprietary electronics and tech blown as well, under the assumption that the aircraft is a loss over enemy territory?

Affirmative !Destroying sensitive data or equipment has been a concern at least since WW2. Bomber crew were then equipped with incendiary devices to blow up maps, charts, books or radio equipment. For some most sensitive devices, the self-destroy feature was built-in :This box comes in B-17 Flying Fortress or B-24 Liberator Identification Friend or Foe system.Nowadays, most modern fighter aircraft include zeroize switches which can be manually operated by the pilot or automatically triggered in the case of an ejection. For instance, the F-16, world’s most used fighter jet, has a few of these switches, to erase all data from individual systems (Electronical warfare data, other sensitive data, or even whole software and firmware !), and a « Master zeroize » switch that will erase absolutely everything :Typically, an F-16 pilot having to divert to a civilian airport, and stay there overnight without the appropriate level of protection, will definitely erase all data according to standard operating procedure, and will even erase embedded software if in a foreign country. These switches will also be used by the pilot when performing a prepared ejection as part of the checklist, even if the seat actuation sequence triggers these switches in case of an unprepared ejection. Some systems will use micro-explosive chips that are directly on electronic components and part of the printed circuited boards, of electrical kill switches that will discharge lots of current or EMI to destroy other components.Anyway, in case of a crash on enemy territory, the wreck will soon be visited by ground crew to plant charges, or by other fighter aircraft to drop some ammunition on what’s left, as it became frequent on UAV crashes in the last few years. You can sleep on both ears, Uncle sam’s secrets are safe !
