Normally the classrooms where exams are conducted are small rooms of a Sarkari school. So no need to go anywhere and waste time in traveling. Sit at home and write test. Save time.You should have clearly laid out time of writing the tests. Preferably it should be the same as it would be on real exam day so that your body is habitual to be fully awake during those hours of the day.Relax for 30 minutes prior to the mock test. A relaxed mind can score at least 10–20 more correct answers.During the mock test this should be the strategy - first 60 minutes you should be able to solve questions which you are sure about. 61st to 90th minute you should be doing the questions about which you are not sure but with common sense, knowledge, memory, smart and intelligent guesswork you can answer those. Next 5 minutes should go in first checking how much you are scoring on average. This has to be done quickly and without much effort. Just cursory look into answers. Next 20 minutes should go into attempting questions based on the analysis of the last 5 minutes. You will be left with 5 minutes. These would go wasted away in marking attendance, drinking water and going to loo in between if needed in case of emergency. Time is precious.Come out of the first paper and do not start discussing the first paper with people around. Keep yourself calm. Enjoy the meal that you have brought with yourself for the in-between break. The second paper is equally important. I have a friend who failed in his final (Sixth) attemptKeep it ready what will you have in Lunch and dinner before the D day. And then what in the morning before the exam and what in between the meals. Practice this in mock also. Please understand that Final day should feel boring and dull because you would have already lived it enough number of times during the practice of mock tests.After writing the mock test, give your answer sheet and the right answers to someone else if possible. and ask them to calculate your score by matching your answers with the answer key and also to calculate the score for you. Do not waste your time doing this activity which will have no bearing on your result.After you know your score don't react to scores. Neither dull nor excited. Be in a state of equanimity. And understand that why some answers went wrong? Where was the mistake? Why you could not answer it rightly? Where did the thought process go wrong? Where did the smart guess work go wrong? How you could have improved the process of thinking and deriving the right answer from the information available with you? Dont think it from the perspective that it was lack of knowledge. Of course, that can be a reason, but more often it is lack of your understanding of the question, poor interpretation of question and options, wavering, wandering and wondering mind, etc. Be there in the moment. Be present while writing tests. Take every test seriously. You should be able to answer them all. There is a possibility that you are not able to do it for test series because there is hardly anyone single test series in India which is worth the salt. But UPSC is different from these test series. Because of these reasons one test series is never enough.Go through the solution of all answers including the ones which you marked right. Understand why you were able to answer it rightly? Especially regarding the questions about which your first reaction was that you did not know the answers. Understand what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.Tick mark the questions the solutions to which you would like to revise. Highlight keywords.On average, your target should be that you are able to score an average of 125+ to qualify CSE normally. I am, Of course, not saying that this will be cut off always or that cut off will be below this. But in normal circumstances, this remains to be a good minimum benchmark. This effectively means around 63 net correct questions i.e. after considering the negative marking also. In my experience even if a paper is tough you shall be able to answer a minimum of 40–45 answers on D day. and based on intelligent and smart work you shall be able to cross the minimum threshold above.Repeat above process 40+ times at least. And you shall be through. Learn the art of answering MCQs. Here everyone studies. So the trick is not really in having the knowledge as everyone has got it. The focus is on the delivery of knowledge. It is because of this reason a lot of times so many intelligent and knowledgable people are not able to clear the exam and so many times even the so-called less knowledgable people are able to clear the exam that too after studying for a very short while.While practicing the mock tests, please finish it in 2 hours. Do not take a break. Do not start eating food in between. Do not start daydreaming. Do not start thinking about good old days or your ex-relationship or food or sleep. Just on the exam. Sit with equanimity. Do not be occupied with anything in the world. Nothing is more important than the exam for those two hours. Even if there is a natural calamity outside, you are better focused on your work. Let someone come and rescue you from your study table only.Be careful of extreme statements in questions asked and the given options.If you do not understand the question in English and you do know the Hindi language as the question is also mentioned in the Hindi language. Sometimes a single word can make such a difference and UPSC has used this trick multiple times.Sometimes the complex question is given. Do not get worried or perplexed. My experience tells me that at times the questions would be tough but then the options are easy and if the questions are easy often the options are difficult.I will be updating this list as and when I recall anything to add.

When I started preparing for GRE, I realized that though I was quite comfortable with Quantitative Section, I was a total noob at Verbal, be it vocabulary or reading comprehension. I had precisely three months to prepare. I surfed through the net and found that the New GRE was "context intensive" unlike its older version which was "vocabulary intensive". In other words, it was your "depth of knowledge" in vocabulary and not the breadth that mattered, which meant I could cut short my target vocabulary bank from 4000 to 1500 but with a caveat that I had to learn those 1500 words inside out, their usage in context of the sentence, which included not just primary, but secondary and tertiary meanings.Note: Below is the study pattern that I followed and it worked for me, but this is not the only way, you can always modify it as per your style. This is more focused on verbal section as I was fairly comfortable in the quantitative section from the beginning. I hope it proves helpful to you as well.1. First Month: ConditioningAs Norman Lewis puts it, if the Vocabulary Bank is Calcium, then extensive reading is Vitamin D. Pick up one novel (preferably a motivational one) and read it voraciously, just finish it off in one week and don't forget to mark the new words that you come across while reading. Initially, it will pose some difficulty to those who are not into reading. I myself had a bitter start but a good novel will absorb you into it as you proceed. (I read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, it took me 12 days and yes, it really pumped me up)Meanwhile, continue with the newspaper DAILY.So, it's been one month now. Don't expect anything from yourself yet. By this time, you have a cursory vocabulary bank of 400-500 words and through extensive reading of newspaper and a novel, you have conditioned yourself for the next phase.2. Second Month: Hitting the Bull's Eye=>The typical "GRE" wayNow it's time to learn some real vocabulary, for the next three weeks, don't think of anything else but vocabulary. There are three different sources for high and medium frequency words that I'm going to mention below, but the good thing is, most of the words from these word lists overlap.First Three Weeks:Sign up at Vocabulary.com. Select the Vocabulary.com Top 1000 and click on "Learn this list" which offers objective type practice questions. It's a good habit to practice these words after signing in as they keep a track of your learning curve and offer you the practice questions accordingly.Join the New GRE group on Facebook. It's the most active GRE group on Facebook right now. It will help you in two ways:Members post random GRE questions on this group, which will give you a rough idea of how the questions are going to be while you are still in the Vocabulary building phase.Secondly, it's a good source to prepare for quantitative section. As long as you are able to solve the math problems being posted over there, you can care-freely concentrate on your verbal preparation.You'll get access to some really USEFUL links.The next source of vocabulary that I referred to was 1500 Words from http://Majortests.com , shuffle between this and http://Vocabulary.com.The last but the "first" source is again, the word list at the end of "Word Power Made Easy". Meanwhile, don't forget to read the newspaper EXTENSIVELY, especially the Editorials.Now you are at a stage where you have a "faint" vocabulary word bank of 1500+ words, an extensive reading experience of a daily newspaper, a high-speed read novel and a fair idea of the level of verbal and quantitative GRE questions through Facebook group. Enough with the "Vocabulary Only" days, now it's time for some real action !!Fourth WeekTime to pick up the GRE preparations books: Now that you have enough vocabulary and reading habit in your armory, its time to use this raw material and shape it to fit the GRE examination pattern. Start with Official GRE by ETS. It will give you a clear idea of the pattern of the exam, but that's all its useful for. Don't expect it to be sufficient for practice problems. This week, just do (work out) this book, read news paper and nothing else. Also, keep a check on your performance while attempting sample problems in this book and identify your weakness: Is it RC or multiple blanks/synonyms3. Third month: Reach the top speed, end the preparation like a sprint racerFirst Two WeeksPick up Manhattan 5 lb, practice ALL the verbal exercises, don't leave a single question unanswered. Frankly speaking, once you are in momentum, these questions are not time consuming, either you know the answer, which is great, or you don't, which you can just look up in the answer key quickly. I stumbled upon the maths section of 5 lb, I liked it, it had all those problems which, though simple, are little tricky and trap you with wrong answer. I practiced quant from this book which prepared me to be ready with these kind of tricky questions. Then you can go through Kaplan GRE practice book, its a small e-book, wouldn't take much time but having finished two books will give you immense confidence and speed in problem solving. Another "thin" book that I quickly skimmed through (I'm telling you, once you are in momentum, these books will pass through in a fly) 1014 Practive Questions for the new GRE-The Princeton Review. You can also pick up books 7 and 8 from Manhattan GRE 1-8 series for RC and Sentence completion respectively.Last Two WeeksIts time to pick up what we have been letting off till now: AWA and Exam Practice Tests. For AWA, I'd read samples from Manhattan AWA. I really like the way they break down the technique to answer the AWA section, which makes it really easy to structure your thought. There are many things which you should keep in mind to score HIGH while preparing for SSC CGL 2018.Let’s discuss the points which helped me during my SSC CGL 2016 preparation.This exam can be easily cracked if you prepare in right way. Avoid the wrong ways of preparation. When I started my preparation in SSC CGL 2013, I did not prepare for GK much and was over-confident as my General Knowledge had always been good. I got pathetic 8–9 marks in GK which resulted in just 111 marks in Tier-1. Then I made the point of preparing all the 4 sections, in the right way in SSC CGL 2016.In Tier-1, all the 4 sections are equally important. All sections have equal questions.In SSC CGL , speed matters a lot. If you have a slow speed , you will not be among toppers even if you know everything. Your main focus should be on increasing speed in solving questions.If you have time, read NCERTs and prepare some notes. Some questions actually come from NCERTs, especially in History, Geography, Microeconomics , Political Science and General Science.Previous year questions are a must solve. Don’t ignore them. Question may or may not repeat but you get a fair idea of level of questions.In Quant section, learn and remember all the formulas by heart. Some questions are directly based on them but many people forget the formula when it is most needed thereby losing easy marks.Read and revise English Grammar rules. Extremely important. Do them from S.P Bakshi book. Start from chapter 1 : Tenses . It is a wonderful book. Supplement with previous year questions.Learn the numbering of English alphabets like A-1, B-2… J-10, Z-26 . Very important in solving reasoning questions quickly if you remember it.Current Affairs are getting more important with every passing year. Prepare them regularly. Make a daily plan.Try to complete 25 questions in GK in 6–7 minutes max. If you don’t know the answer , don’t think much in GK. Never guess in GK.Try to eliminate 2 options from the given 4. You increase your probability of getting correct answer by 50%.Don’t give more than 10 minutes to English section. Never guess in English unless you are down to 2 options.Try solving Quant questions through options wherever possible. Makes question very easy. Particularly useful in Algebra and Trigonometry questions.Learn and remember all the Geometry and Mensuration formulas. These two topics have a lot of formulas which you might forget during exam.Daily take one alphabet and make vocabulary. For alphabets with fewer words, take more than 1 (x, y, z, q).Just rote all the Active-Passive and Direct-Indirect rules. Practice them and related questions as much as possible. These can be very scoring if done with rules.Always remember “Practice is the key to success”. Practice actually increases your speed and accuracy. My personal experience.Subscribe to atleast 2 good online test series once you are through with the syllabus.One month before exam, attempt atleast one Mock test daily. This will help finding your weak and strong areas.Make a list of some simple hacks like squares of numbers till 50, Square roots of numbers till 12, values of some common fractions which can be used as percentages like 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/11 etc. and other such stuff. Saves a lot of calculation time.Practice series type questions in Logical reasoning.
