How do they know?That's a leading question because honestly, if the government knows, so does the press. 100% guaranteed in all cases but two.First of all, nothing in NSA algorithms is going to ping you for being immortal (unless the NSA had reason to believe immortals existed in the first place). Surveillance programs scrub for and return communiques that affect national security. No A.I. has the abstract thinking to put together that your conversations about nostalgia for the 1500s or even shrugging off a gunshot are of national security interest.Sure, once someone with political power knows about you, you will be targeted by government surveillance. But the question is how they know in the first place.The only possibilities are that you reveal yourself, someone close to you reveals you, or a stranger somehow puts it together with evidence that can overcome people's skepticism. I'll argue all 3 of these options have the same outcome: Your secret becomes the biggest story in the world. The press runs your story wide and you suddenly become the most scrutinized person on the planet.If it's you, a friend, a lover, anyone you chose to let in, the only reason to blow your cover is either to get famous or ruin your life. If it's an amateur detective, again, the only reason to dig in in the first place is the thought of getting famous ("I can discover something unbelievable!"). The only reason to reveal what they find, again, to get famous.If, by some microscopic chance, the first blabbermouth to get wise to your secret is some fascistic zealot who thinks your ass should be secret government property (AND has the connections and credibility to make that happen silently), the best recourse of everyone close to you would be to blow your cover wide to the public. That guarantees the one thing that nefarious government spooks hate most: attention. And while a majority of Americans may be willing to look the other way when they're told the person being locked in a deep dark hole may be a terrorist, they won't be so non-plussed when that person either disproves God, proves God, met George Washington, or simply provides a genetic/medical hope that you, your kids, or anyone you love never has to die. The government would not be able to make a single move against you without the entirety of the free press – from CNN to online mavericks to teens with cell phones – watching every move.Now, they MAY try to convict you of some kind of crime (up to and including framing you), so as to incarcerate you, strip away rights, and get you behind closed doors. But keep in mind their machinations against you would be subject to the tightest scrutiny the public could muster. Hell, you'd be the new walking mascot for the ACLU on the mere chance that Senator Smith gets on the line to Attorney General Jones to plant the seed of a smear campaign.Don't underestimate how earth-shaking the existence of an immortal would be. It would be like the second coming of Jesus, literally, and without any sectarian reason to ignore it.There are 2 exceptions where the government would not be neutered by public attention:1.) The government itself created your immortality and decided not to let you leave the lab.2.) Your immortality is discovered by U.S. troops on a foreign battlefield. Then all bets are off and your ass gets Gitmo'd (though I would still argue it's a longshot that all personnel involved between your capture and the dissection of your body don't go to the press).Otherwise, the most likely scenario is this:As you try to come to terms with being the most famous human being to have EVER lived, in a world where every person wants simultaneously to be you, to punish you, and to chop you up into itty bitty pieces to study you – you will be approached.You will be approached by a government subcontractor offering you lots and LOTS AND LOTS of money – or whatever else you could negotiate out of them – in exchange for the opportunity to study you. In effect, they would be offering you a full-time job as a lab specimen, and you could basically define every term. You would have to hire a team of lawyers who could approach this negotiation with the proper LONG-TERM perspective (in itself no easy task), but most likely the end result would be a joint public/private concern allowing you to live in whatever luxury you'd like for a never-ending complement of surveillance (both conventional and biometric), lab samples, physical tests, and other exploratory medicine. If you allowed them, they would move the scientific teams into your mansions with you, but I'd advise against that. If you try to limit your surveillance exposure, they'll most likely ignore your wishes and do it all surreptitiously anyway. They will attempt to influence the negotiation by exerting public pressure via the press – they'd gamble you wouldn't want to live forever with everyone in the world thinking you're the ultimate selfish asshole. Your concept of privacy is now forever obliterated (which kinda sucks given how long forever is for you, but I'd wager you'd learn to live with it).Most likely, the international teams devoted to you would resemble the teams who work NASA joint missions. Isolating and reproducing whatever makes you you would be the country's new moonshot. There'd be a ton of vocal minorities, arguing you were either a demon or the beginning of the end of human civilization (or both), but those arguments wouldn't find traction. One of the tractionless fractions would be the "bio-Luddites" arguing to leave you alone and let you (and the rest of us) live a normal life. They'd be ignored, of course, because...hey, you signed up for this! You want this! We're paying you! You've chosen to help humanity, praise be unto you!See, your "team" from the project would probably be the nicest people you've ever met. They'd want to ensure you remain cooperative, in good spirits, and feeling special. You'd probably come to find them all sycophantic, a contingency the project would have accounted for by rotating out day-to-day team members on the basis of the quality of their relationships with you. There'd be a board of intense psychologists who'd be paid handsomely to make sure you were making friends with their people.There'd be hundreds, if not thousands, of scientists involved in your day-to-day life, but the project would designate a handful of "point people" who'd be the only ones allowed to interface with you day-to-day. This is part of the psychological operation, to maintain as much emotional normalcy as possible. Any day-to-day point person would most likely be either a scientist, civilian military personnel, or some other professional chosen purely to conform to your psychological needs (are you an artist? Dollars to donuts there's at least one artist on your day-to-day team). These people would all be given CIA training for dealing with human intelligence assets, and would all be chosen on the basis of a psychological profile for you that's so detailed it's usually reserved for foreign heads of state we want to assassinate. They'd also recruit family members and friends, and use psy ops (including tons and tons of money!) to manipulate them into encouraging you to comply.If you try to impose a term to your contract or back out altogether, be ready to be hounded tirelessly for your cooperation. The entire U.S. government (and plenty of private companies) would effectively become 24/7 tele-marketers with a target audience of YOU. This is when your ACLU friends would come in handy, making the argument that your immortality gives no one the right to target you, least of all your government. In the end, though, they won't be able to stop the "every trick in the book" approach that the majority of humanity would undertake to coax you into being a lab specimen. Best for you to just settle on an arrangement. They'd follow you to the steppes of Mongolia or the wastes of Siberia anyway in you tried to flee – and frankly, Putin's government is going to be way harder to work with. You want to do a deal with the American government as much for protection against other hostile actors as you would to help humanity.The sad truth is, whatever sense of normalcy you'd cultivated in your time as a secret immortal would be gone. The entirety of your friends and family would get some kind of whiplash from what happened to you. Your life would now be a joint venture shared with thousands of scientists, politicians, executives and military leaders. You'd be simultaneously the most powerful and powerless person in the world – kind of like the President, but without any agenda of your own.This ends in one of two ways:The source of your immortality is isolated, reproduced and mass-produced.Or it's not.If it is, then your contract will eventually end, and you will retire back to a world so fundamentally changed by your presence that I couldn't hope to describe it. You would be lauded and heralded in some way, perhaps viewed similarly to the Regent of the British Empire at its height – a heady stew of worship, respect, revilement, and indifference. I would say over generations that perception would fade, but generational change is no longer a thing, thanks to you. We all live forever now. How that would change the perception of you over time, I haven't hope to speculate.If your immortality does not become a commercial product, your future is uncertain. If they isolate what makes you you, but choose NOT to mass produce it, then the world falls into political chaos from which it may never recover. Who decides who deserves to live forever? In this scenario, you may be released from your contract, but you would quickly get swept up as a political pawn by one side or the other. This is a doomsday scenario, as by now the species will have lost momentum toward any goal other than immortality, and for them to know it exists but is being kept from them? That's total global mass uprising, complete societal breakdown conditions. However it shakes out, you will probably be blamed for it by some majority of survivors. You will be cursed to live forever in a world that hates and fears you, that was broken by you, even though you had very little choice in any of it. How you cope with that is up to you.If they can't isolate and reproduce your immortality at all, then they'd take whatever they did learn, spin it as positively as possible to the public, and quietly cut you loose. Your days would then be spent dodging both cranks and reputable scientific organizations who want another crack at you. Your body basically goes on the open market in the eyes of ANYONE who hasn't spent their career studying you already. You will long for the sweet comfort of the daily lab routine, and all the peaceful insulation that gave you from the world.Keep in mind, in any scenario where your contract ends, you will still be unbelievably wealthy (except in the case where society has broken down to render that wealth meaningless). You would most likely hire teams and structure your life to provide similar routines and protections as you had with the government. Perhaps that was even part of the deal they cut with you, post-hoc protection for life, like an ex-President. Eventually, maybe 100 years down the line, maybe 10, it'd become a conservative political issue to renegotiate (or cancel) that deal. Why should you be a literal endless burden to the taxpayers when we didn't even get what we wanted from you? 50 years as a lab specimen is freaking NOTHING by your clock. Go screw.You'd probably try to kill yourself before any of the above happened. Especially if you were used to living rather ordinarily before the 21st century caught up with you. If you were truly immortal, you'd fail in your suicide attempt, and eventually you'd have to learn to embrace life not as an individual human, but rather the avatar for the collective dreams and fears of a species. It'd be the ultimate existential crucible, one you could not escape with the convenience of death. You'd have to change your view of everything, of everyone, of what it means to be you, in ways that are again too profound for me to describe here.

IIT students can be considered as moral corruption personified!I was a young “foreign returned” faculty in an IIT, and with the amount of moral corruption I witnessed in students, I felt like the original Nehruvian vision behind IITs is long lost, and now they have turned into these monsters to breed selfish, upper caste supremacist agenda (UPDATE: someone shared this answer to bash up Nehru, so I need to clarify that I am not blaming any politicians, because it is the “people in IITs” who have let the vision get lost, not Nehru or someone else).Most students who enter IITs, come after going through some intensive exams like JEE, GATE, or PhD entrance etc. While passing these exams can be a sign of intellect, more than just intellect, it is often a sign of breeding intense greed for short term gratification, and that is what you see abundant in IIT students.Undergraduates: They have to qualify what is considered as the toughest exam like JEE, but over the past few years, with rampant rise of coaching classes, and their sky rocketing fees, nowadays mostly students who qualify through these exams are from very well-to-do families, with overwhelming male majority (Indian parents are yet to catch up with the idea of spending money on girl’s education). So students who qualify this exam, and enter IITs through open category are all homogeneous, from well-to-do, mostly upper caste, patriarchal families, fortified with training to achieve instant results by hook or crook. Most of the undergraduates have little or nothing to do with learning, and most want to take up fat salaried jobs in MNCs, or use their IIT brand to relocate abroad and settle there. I was “privileged” to work with some high AIR holders with high CPI (9.0 and above), just to be shocked to notice downright lack of any understanding of the subjects on these students’ part.Postgraduates: Among these there are two sub-categoriesMTech: These students mostly enter IITs as a “degree refurbishment” program. They are usually from small local state colleges with very poor preparation in their respective subjects. They too go to GATE coaching institutes, and just like JEE coaching, get prepared for instant results with short-term gratification. These students’ main goal is to use the IIT brand to get a fat salaried job in an MNC, because otherwise it is difficult for them to compete with the IIT BTech brand. They have no interest in research or learning. If there is an RTI enquiry about IIT MTech project/thesis, and if they are to be made available publicly (which I think must happen to justify spending Indian taxpayer’s money on these white elephants in India), the abysmal level of the quality of their work will be self evident.PhD: These students mostly enter IITs because they don’t have resources to go abroad and/or they want to chill for 5 years doing some tiny bit of incremental, often outdated research, publish a paper or two, and eventually get a PhD degree. Plus MHRD stipend of Rs. 25000–30000 per month with extremely subsidised housing, food, and extra-curricular facilities help them save a lot, so even when MHRD stops their stipend after 5 years, they happily continue their PhD out of their pocket enjoying their relaxed life than fretting about their research. Many of them have a final goal of joining a second tier IIT or NIT or other state/local colleges, and enjoy the rest of the life in a relaxed manner on a relatively good salary. They often gravitate towards faculty that don’t push them for quality work, and faculty that works on applied subjects that can give them instant gratification without having to put sustained rigorous efforts over longer periods.If I write even few of my several anecdotal experiences, this answer will turn into a book in itself, so I will wrap it here.Mind you, the faculty in IITs are also partner-in-crime in all this. They want to take it easy to maintain their popularity among students, and enjoy their permanent government job with pension, than pushing themselves or students for quality work, and sensitizing students actively about social divide, gender discrimination, caste discrimination, religious hatred.Having said all this, there are rare exceptions among these students, who shine internationally, but they are after all exceptions, and not examples (representatives) of the respective groups.And what I have written here is the core reason, why no matter how much hue and cry Indians make, IITs will take another 100 years or more to even imagine to come in top 50 institutes in the world!————————————————————————————————UPDATE: Answering some comments.How far ago: I was a faculty in an IIT not that long ago (in the past few years). IITs may have increased PhD intake, but that has not at all increased quality of research, in fact then throughput has gone down it seems (more students with bad quality).Most of the research is “artificial” to get publications alone so as to get promotions. The older faculties who got promoted without research, don't even bother with publications. There is no effort to translate the published research into any real usable technology especially in the Indian context. Much of the faculty is busy solving first world problems, and there is no accountability for them, who in turn have no motivation to discipline these students. I have faculty friends in other IITs as well as CFTIs, who have concurred with my experience privately, especially about postgraduate students.A handful faculties play by the “populist agenda” going ultra easy on students to increase their popularity, so that they get maximum number of students. Then the faculty that truly wants to bring rigor gets outcast, by their colleagues as well as students, so then they either have to fall in line or quit the system (I did the latter)! The craze for populist agenda is because anyway students lack rigor and motivation, so they have to grab a large sample space so as to increase the probability of finding a couple of motivated students, who work regardless of faculty's discipline!So this has become chicken or egg problem — did the bad students turned faculty to adopt apathy and populist agenda, or did apathy and populist agenda turned students bad?? I don't know the answer to this, but somewhere there is a dire need to break this vicious cycle!Reservations: I had heard some colleagues blaming reservations, but in my personal experience the open category students are just as bad. In fact they are probably worse than reserved category students, due to their sense of entitlement! At least the reserved category students have bit more humility, even if they might not be excellent in their efforts, motivation, and performance! :)Settling abroad and fat salaried job: Everyone has a right to better life, agreed, but please refer to my point of Nehruvian vision behind creating these heavily subsidized technology institutes in this country.
