I'll go based off my experience as an honor roll student who used to struggle in high school.-Only use pencils for math from now on. I'm warning you now. Pretty soon your teachers will NOT accept work done in pencil. If that catches you off guard its upsetting, but just use pen for writing.-Learn the Cornell notes system if you want to get the most out of what the teacher says. Some kids hate it, some swear by it. Find out what kind of person you are and either use it or find another way to take your notes. I have the most success with Cornell notes. (I also incorporate highlighters)-Use a backpack. I know people in my grade who use a simple drawstring bag and they ALWAYS complain about the bags breaking, the papers in them getting bent at the corners, and work getting lost. No one with judge you for using a backpack.-For language classes, there is a site called study blue where you can use online flashcards. I use it for vocabulary. You can go over the words you find to be tough and you can have them all organized (They're printable, too!)-Start looking at colleges/universities. It is never too early. I'm serious.-Use your locker or don't. No one in my school uses them. I've used them for lunch. They don't matter as much as they seem like they do on TV.-Stay on task. It is harder to catch up later in the year when everyone is mentally checked out and you're neck-deep in material you don't even know.-An agenda/school planner will save you if you somehow forget what your homework is. The school issued ones (if you get them) are okay to a point, but they run out of space easily. I recommend the Original Student Calendar which will come out fairly soon for the next school year. It also goes through the summer so you can plan other things like summer reading.-Form a study group if you find yourself with a notoriously difficult teacher. Collaborating with other students can help a lot, especially when you're in the same class.-Buy pens/pencils. Keep them in your bag. Keep them at home. Keep them in your pocket. Keep them in your locker. Keep them in the spiral of your agenda. Pens vanish by the boxful if you keep them in one place, and having one everywhere will prevent those awkward "I don't have a pen" moments. And you'll make friends if you're the one who always has a pen to borrow.-If your teacher hands you a syllabus, keep it in your room or your locker. If you are sick and don't know the teacher's late work policy, you might get the "I wrote it in the syllabus!" thing. It is also good for knowing what the next unit is going to be.-Say you forget to hand in a writing assignment. Get it in ASAP if the teacher accepts late work. I'll tell you why. Many a time I have forgotten to hand something in and I type it up that night and email it to the teacher before it even hits 6pm (Get your teachers' email addresses if you can) they may say that late work will be considered less points, but sometimes they forget if this "late work" gets to them ASAP. I mean THAT DAY. Stay after and print it in the library and hand it to them before they leave. Do what it takes. Late work piles up and if you get it in quickly, it means you're responsible and teachers will cut you slack.-Build a relationship with the teachers. (Obviously on a professional level, not romantic) Ask them how their day is going, ask them how other classes like the work. I'm at a point where I will stay after class and chit chat with teachers about other students, the work, they give me study advice etc. It has its benefits. You will feel better in class when you know the teacher is an actual human being. I get hall passes whenever I want, too. Be likeable. It isn't hard.-Get used to your schedule. Nothing is more irritating than that one person who asks "When does this class get out?" It makes you seem disinterested and whiny.-Talk to people! Or get involved somehow. The more positive people you know, the more memorable your years will be. I was in theater, d.a.r.e, pride, interact, and model UN. You don't have to join everything, but involvement will make you happier. (Just leave time for studying)-If you end up in a class that you KNOW is not for you, talk to your guidance councilor IMMEDIATELY. They are hesitant about letting you switch classes to begin with, and so get an early start on that after you're sure.
