Most country names in Russian are pretty easy to understand. The trickier ones for an English speaker include Soedinyonnye Shtaty Ameriki (USA), Velikobritaniya or Angliya (UK), Yuzhno-Afrikanskaya Respublika (South Africa), Gruziya (Georgia), Litva (Lithuania), Cheronogoriya (Montenegro), Vengriya (Hungary), Pol’sha (Poland), Kipr (Cyprus), Yaponiya (Japan), Kitay (China). Other names can be slightly different from English version (Rumyniya instead of Romania, Efiopiya instead of Ethiopia or Yamaika instead of Jamaica) but easily recognizable.However, in my youth it was much more complicated, and not only for foreigners, but for Russian speakers as well. For some reason the Party officials decided to use only acronyms for Communist countries. Here is the list:SSSR (СССР) - Soviet Union;PNR (ПНР) - People’s Republic of Poland;VNR (ВНР) - Hungarian People’s Republic;GDR (ГДР) - German Democratic Republic aka East Germany;ChSSR (ЧССР) - Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia;NRA (НРА) - People’s Republic of Albania;NRB (НРБ) - People’s Republic of Bulgaria;SRR (СРР) - Socialist Republic Romania;SFRYu (СФРЮ) - Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia;DRV (ДРВ), later SRV (СРВ) - Democratic Republic Vietnam, later Socialist Republic Vietnam;KNDR (КНДР) - People’s Democratic Republic Korea aka North Korea;KNR (КНР) - People’s Republic of China;LNDR (ЛНДР) - People’s Democratic Republic of Laos;MNR (МНР) - People’s Republic of Mongolia;NDRY (НДРЙ) - People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen aka South Yemen.When I read any article on international relations (and I liked to read them as a child), I had troubles whenever I met the names of Communist countries. It was how I learned them all - I had no choice.On the contrary, capitalist countries seemed to be much more humane and natural because instead of those disgusting acronyms, they had nice names such as France, Italy, Great Britain, Japan or Israel. One could not be mistaken here who is who.However, there were exceptions to this rule. Three capitalist countries were also designated by acronyms: SShA/США (USA), FRG/ФРГ (West Germany) and YuAR/ЮАР (South Africa). One Communist country retained its normal name in everyday use: Cuba (Куба).Inside Soviet Union, only three republics were made into acronyms: RSFSR/РСФСР (Russia), USSR/УССР (Ukraine) and BSSR/БССР (Belarus). All others had normal names.EDIT: Alexander Stiefelmann reminded me there was also ZSFSR/ЗСФСР before 1929 (Transcaucasia), later separated into Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

You need to complete your bachelor’s degree before enrolling in law school.Technically, the accreditation standards established by the American Bar Association (ABA) permit law schools to admit applicants who have completed only 3/4 of the credits required for a bachelor’s degree, but the law schools themselves impose higher standards. You need to have a bachelor’s degree or they won’t consider your application.The last time I checked, there was only one accredited law school in the country that routinely admitted applicants with only 3/4 of a bachelor’s degree. You do not want to attend that law school. It’s at the top of everyone’s “worst law school in the country” list and has been hanging on to accreditation by the skin of its teeth for years. According to the school’s most recent Required Disclosures report, only 36% of its graduates were employed as lawyers within nine months of graduation.What’s the tiny exception?About forty law schools in the US have entered into agreements with individual universities to offer accelerated “3+3” programs where highly qualified students can complete their fourth year of college and their first year of law school at the same time, thereby earning their law degree in six years instead of the usual seven.There are a few things you should know about these programs.These programs are available only to a few of the most highly qualified students. A small minority of college students are eligible to participate in them.They’re not joint degree programs. The student earns the two degrees sequentially.Students have to be admitted separately to the undergraduate program and the law school. Being admitted to a 3+3 program as a college freshman doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be admitted to the law school three years later.If you enroll in a 3+3 program at a specific undergraduate institution, you’re committed to attending the law school that has a 3+3 agreement with your university. You can’t start a 3+3 program at Georgia State and complete your program at Columbia Law School, even though both institutions have 3+3 programs. If you start your 3+3 program at Georgia State, you’re committed to attending the Georgia State College of Law. If you want to attend Columbia Law, you have to start your 3+3 program at Columbia University.

If you are applying for a license in a state that is part of the multistate Driver’s License Compact, and your prior license was also issued by a state that was part of that compact, you will have to surrender the license you had in your prior state. The agency in your new state will take possession of that license, and either return it to the issuing state or destroy it, depending on the agreement it has with that state. In most cases, the receiving state sends a notification to the issuing state and then destroys the license document, but there are exceptions to this practice.Five states, Michigan, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, are not party to the Driver’s License Compact. In these five states, what happens will depend on whether there is a separate bilateral agreement between that state and the state that issued your prior license. If there is, the terms of that agreement will control what happens; if there is not, your prior license will be yours to do with as you please, and will remain valid until it expires on its own.
