Should children in the United States go to school year round?

My district had year-around for about 15 years. We went back to a traditional calendar.Problems my district found with year-around:Neighboring districts on a traditional calendar made scheduling sports difficult. Students need to earn sports scholarships so parents wanted a traditional year. They wanted their kids to play sports with the other school districts. The district found paying various support staffs, office staffs and district office staffs year-round very expensive. Money was saved giving all these people the summer off.Running the air conditioner in the summer months was costing the district a FORTUNE! With temperatures over 100 degrees, every classroom was running the A/C all day. Utility companies do not give free services to schools. It is so hot in July and August, that recess had to be canceled most of the time. Students were locked in the classroom all day without being able to go out and play. Students were unhappy. Teachers couldn’t get bathroom breaks. It made for a very long day. Sometimes parents would not send their children to school saying it was too hot.Running schools year-around made for more more wear-and-tear on schools. In the summer, custodians deep clean. They work in the summer to clean, repair and do maintenance. It is harder to maintain building when all work most be done at night. Big repair or construction jobs were delayed for winter breaks. They had too many big jobs to complete in such a short amount of time. For example: If a classroom had plumbing issues, the water had to be turned off because there was no time to fix the pipes with all the kids present. One big problem was parents complained a lot. My district had a few schools remain traditional calendar to make parents happy. Too many families were applying to go to the traditional schools. The demand was great. The traditional schools were running at full-capacity. Parents were trying to get their kids enrolled in neighboring districts because they had traditional calendars. My district finally gave up on year-around.

Why do some people hate skeuomorphism?

I don't think people hate skeuomorphism because it is skeuomorphism, but because of the latest examples have been very over-designed. Especially Apple's.If we pick and choose 2 of Dieter Rams' "ten principles for good design" we get:Good design is unobtrusiveGood design is as little design as possibleIf you look at Apple's Calendar, the aesthetics are very over the top and don't really provide a ton of usefulness. It is obtrusive and distracting, and ugly for the sake of skeuomorphism. The big number, the calendar grid, the list interface – all this reminds us of traditional calendars. There was no need to turn the design up to 11.Apple has done some great skeu, the bouncing in iOS when you reach the end… that's perfectly good example of real life elements making a difference. Overloading a design with textures so it "somehow feels familiar" isn't.If you've not, do check out http://skeu.it/
