How is IIIT Vadodara?

There are lots of good answers on Quora about how IIIT Vadodara is. Although the opinions might differ among different batches with each passing year, I will be answering this question according to my experience here as an Undergraduate during my Freshman year (Aug ‘18 - May ‘19).Before reading this answer, I would suggest you go through some of these answers that paint a fairly realistic (and up to date) image of this institute:Aman Raj's answer to How is IIIT Vadodara?Tanmay Ambadkar's answer to How is IIIT Vadodara for a Btech in CSE/IT?Tanmay Ambadkar's answer to How are the placements at IIIT Vadodara?Vedant Prajapati's answer to How is IIIT Vadodara? Also, you might want to explore the Institute Website http://iiitvadodara.ac.in to further dig into things that concern, apart from the usual:“Indian Institute of Information Technology(IIIT) Vadodara is established in the year 2013 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The partners are Government of India, Government of Gujarat, Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute, Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals and Tata Consultancy Services. Currently, Ms Chanda Kochhar, Former MD & CEO, ICICI Bank Pvt. Ltd. is the chairperson of the Board of Governors.”I am going to divide this answer into two major parts: Academic Life and Non-Academic Life (or Student Life, as it is often called).Academic Life:Curriculum and Courses:Currently, IIITV offers B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT). Both of these courses are in great if you are interested in the Computers and IT Industry and would like to pursue a career in them. Last Year, there were around 160 available seats for CSE and 40 seats for IT.You can check a detailed curriculum for these courses and the academic calendar on the Institute Website. We have Air-Conditioned Labs for all the practicals and also a humble but continuously increasing Library that has the books that you may require for your courses. And as Tanmay Ambadkar says in his answer,“There are ample resources that the institute provides, they provide lots of online resources which are available on the student ID you will receive once you are in college.” (MATLAB Student Account, for instance)Also, last semester, for our Basic Electrical Engineering Laboratory, we were taken to IIT Gandhinagar as they had better equipment available. So, the lack of some equipment or facilities sometimes is not a major concern as arrangements are made to make sure the curriculum goes as smoothly as it can.And yes, it has compulsory 75% policy in lectures which in my opinion is sufficient for sick leaves, to attend functions and casual bunking.Professors and Teaching:You can check the list of Faculties and their Qualifications on the website IIITV | Faculty. All the faculties are at least Ph. Ds in their respective fields and new faculties are to be appointed to increase the faculty/student ratio too. They are helpful and the Tutorials and Assignments provided by them are consistent with the course. Some faculties are really good and have a good grasp of what they are teaching and know how to keep the lecture from being boring while some others, are still learning. But unlike schools, colleges are not really a place to be dependent on your faculties and get spoonfed by them. You have the full right to not follow a particular faculty and learn the course on your own as long as you are doing good in it and not goofing around while consoling yourself that you are not attending his/her lecture because he/her is not good at it.Teaching Assistants (TAs) are mostly nice (except for some of them) and are ready to help you with the course anytime you go to them.Placements and Internships:With the coming of our new Training and Placement Officer, Mrs Jyoti Singh, we had a placement season better than what was seen in the past.Out of a total of 99 students in B.Tech and M.Tech, of which 85 were Registered/Eligible, 82 were placed with 110 Offers received. Overall, there were 96.5% of students placed and most of them are now at reputed places. The Maximum package offered was 15.31 LPA and the Average Salary was 6.4 LPA, which is decent and comparable to most of the NITs and IIITs (and some IITs). Overall, the placement has seen a rise and is expected to increase as more companies come to visit the institute and the students keep performing better in the interviews as well as on themselves. Also, for the Summer Internships, 40+ students secured internship opportunities from the companies through placement cell and 20+ students secured off-campus internship opportunities. Moreover, 2 students from the 2016 batch made it to the prestigious Google Summer of Code, 2019. With Microsoft, Amazon, Mathworks, Codenation, Quikr, Sigmoid, Shipsy, etc. providing internship opportunities over a wide range of fields.Six students have also secured an internship in International companies like Topline (Japan), Field Protect (Japan), Professa (Japan) and BlindSide (Germany) as the first time. Students have also made it to top companies like Paytm and KPMG off campus. Apart from Industrial internships, students also secured research fellowship programmes with a high rate of success. Students from the institute have made it to the prestigious institutes like IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and IISC Bangalore. A startup idea from the institute has been selected for incubation at IIT Gandhinagar.Although, after you join college, you would realise that packages do not matter much. Instead, it is more about what you make out of yourselves that would matter. What you could surely get at this institute is a good atmosphere that keeps you motivated to learn, provided that you want to learn. But, for your perusal, you can check Training & Placement Cell IIITV for detailed info (and a nice summary chart) about the same.Non- Academic Life:Campus, Hostel and Transportation:Contrary to popular belief, IIIT Vadodara is not in Vadodara, but at its temporary campus in Gandhinagar. As Vedant Prajapati explained in his answer,“DAIICT, Gandhinagar was appointed as the mentor institute for IIITV. Because of this, IIITV was initially established in Gandhinagar.Since it cannot be shifted to Vadodara until the permanent campus is ready, it is expected to remain in Gandhinagar for at least two more years.”The academic building of the Institute is at- Block No.9, Government Engineering College, Sector-28, Gandhinagar.Hostels are compulsory for all students. For the past two years, they had been in Block B, PDPU High Rise (which was 18.6 KM from the Academic Block) and was like a paradise for students. Now, we are being shifted to our new hostels in Sabar Institute of Technology (which is around 31.8 KM from the Academic Block). We had Buses plying between the Hostel and the Academic Block daily and this would continue in Sabar too, though he travel time would increase. This, however, would not be an issue for the upcoming batch as their lectures would be held at Sabar itself. Also, for any event where students are required to be at the Institute, bus arrangements are made accordingly to take the students to and from there. We are also promised to be provided transportation to the main city every week or when a big enough group of students need it. An emergency vehicle is also at the Hostel round the clock in case anyone needs medical attention immediately. In the previous Hostels, we were required to be inside the Hostel Premises latest by 22:30 and hope this would be the same in Sabar too. While we are being told that we would be shifted to our new Campus soon and even a ‘Master Plan’ for the construction of the campus has been prepared with an architect, there is no ‘sure date’ as when this would be done.Although we are ‘barely’ managing with the temporary campus and hostel, having a permanent campus of our own would give the Institute a sense of security, permanence, identity and self-dependence. We could organise much bigger events and a better student-life would be established and not to forget, the struggles our seniors have gone through to ensure that we get proper facilities, and the changes in Hostels that they have seen would be paid off. The hassle of leaving early from the hostel for the institute would be gone forever and finally, IIIT ‘Vadodara’ could be in ‘Vadodara’.Food:The food that we had been getting till now is to be best described as fairly average- what you would expect at any other Institute. College food has not been described as very good, by students who leave their home for the first time but, they soon adapt to the taste. But, the food is certainly hygienic in the way it is prepared and served. And for your appetite, there are College Canteens too that you can anytime count on.Internet Access:Both at Academic Block and Hostel, unlimited Wi-Fi networks with good speed are provided but there is NO LAN connection.Student Clubs, Sports and Extra-Curricular Activities:This section is what makes this Institute rather interesting!IIITV can boast of a robust Student Community with Student Clubs for most activities that you would want to enjoy in these four years of your College Life.We have clubs for Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Coding, Photography, Designing, Literature, Computer Gaming, Robotics and an upcoming one for Maths Enthusiasts. These are managed under the Technical, Literature, Cultural and Sports Communities, all run by students with support from the Institute. The Sports Community oversees the organising of sports like Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket, Volleyball, Cricket, Basketball and many other sports.Being in Gandhinagar gives us the opportunity to be in the vicinity of some great colleges like IIT Gandhinagar, DAIICT, Nirma Institute, IIM Ahmedabad and PDPU and all these Institutes taking part in each other’s College Fests and visiting their shows, apart from bringing home prizes, brings in some great college memories.Around the year, we also celebrate special days like Republic Day and Independence Day and organise Cultural Fest, Technical Fest, Sports Meet and Inter-House Competitions. You can also refer to Tanmay Ambadkar’s answer about college life in IIIT Vadodara.Coding Culture:With a great and robust Student Community, we also have a very good Coding Culture and an active community that helps maintain this culture alive. This session was particularly great for this as we have a CodeChef Campus Chapter, a Developer Student Club and also good relations with Google Developer Group Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Gandhinagar and Women Tech Makers, Ahmedabad, Coding Blocks, Geeks For Geeks and many more.We organise regular Competitive Programming Competitions on CodeChef, Mathematical Contests, Hackathons, Talks, Workshops, and are an active Open Source organisation on GitHub (You can checkout some of our projects there). Many of our students are also regular contributors on Geeks For Geeks. To get an idea about the kind of Programming Activities we undertake, you can visit the Facebook Page of IIITV Coding Club. This answer by Aman Raj also gives links to IIITV’s students’ rakings on CodeForces and CodeChef. For the Fee structure of the Institute, you can look up on B.Tech. Admissions for a detailed list.If you are looking up Colleges for Admissions, make sure to look up other alternatives thoroughly too. IIIT Vadodara might not be your best bet, but it certainly provides enough to give you a pleasurable and memorable college life, provided you are ready to work for it.If you are getting a better college in Counselling, do go for it. I would recommend this institute only if this is the best one that you are getting based on your rank and after considering the lows and highs of other similar Institutes.Good Luck!
