Should Britain compensate all ex-empire countries for crimes committed during the era?

They did, that’s why they’re ex-empire countries. There were terms and agreements signed. Coming back half a century later and demanding cash because you read about things you don’t like is not a valid reason for demanding payment. That’s just holding a grudge. My great-grandmother watched her parent’s farm get burned to the ground and got put in a concentration camp by British soldiers during the Anglo-Boer war. I’m certain the British would like to believe their soldiers were perfect gentlemen while in charge of camps holding hundreds of women and children, I’d like to believe it too. When my mother and her family brought it up she’d say,” Just leave it in the past, leave it in the past, it’s history.”I’m certain I could make a valid claim for compensation, but then again, I’m now married to a British woman, enjoying the company of many good British friends, gainfully employed and contributing to the economy and enjoying the fruits of a first world nation. A nation which incidentally gives millions in aid to my former homeland every year. Exactly how much does Britain have to give before people leave things in the past?

Why do Punjab’s farmers oppose the new farm laws?

The 5th meeting, is being held now Railway Minister Piyush Goel is there in the capacity of Minister of Food & Consumer Affairs. The 3 Laws, farmers want to be nullified (by Parliament to repeal), are:1. The Farm Law .... which relieves them from compulsorily selling their crops in Mandi only. This law is applicable to 23 essential food crops (wheat, rice, etc) not to common vegs, fruits, sugar cane, milk, honey, poultry, etc etc (all of which are freely saleable outside a Mandi). The Law gives an option to the farmer to sell his produce to the highest bidder anywhere in India; who may come and collect. Also mandates payment within 3 days. There’s nothing in the law to prevent him to sell at MSP rates in the mandi, as usual, in case he doesn’t get a higher price outside. MSP mechanism was not part of any Law before, hence Govt doesn’t want to mention it in the new law; referring to which can create many more problems & issues; and it may then lead to demands for statutorily fixed prices etc (not citing details, it would be long and complex). But the PM himself has assured a number of times that MSP-Mandi system will continue; and they know it shall.2. The Anti-pollution Law, recently passed by Govt, made stubble burning punishable by penalty. They want the entire law rescinded😉3. If the second demand is funny, the third is funnier. The Govt passed a Bill for direct cash payment to farmers for use of electricity in farms, in lieu of subsidised power. Why they don’t want cash? Is it, someone else is stealing the power meant for farms?~~~~~~~I’ve seen some arguments for and against, including some figures of huge spends on MSP; as well as the manipulative practices of Mandi operations, to dupe the farmer & FCI. Also, reports of Mandi Boards (under State Govt controls) doing massive corruption .... maybe another reason of their dissent; anticipating gradual marginalisation of the big Artis (agents) and the boards 😉.So, let’s see what transpires tomorrow, and how Govt tackles. So far, the 40 unions invited for talks have failed to cite a single clause that’s objectionable, or should be amended, when Govt says it’s open to discuss any.I’ve, however, 2 specific point; both in farmers’ interest:1. 👉 Do whatever amendment is needed to ensure that the buyer of their crops, or any middleman, contractor, corporate, whosoever ... should NOT be able to take ultimate control, or transfer, or usurp their land under the guise of Contract Farming Agreements. It should be explicitly clear that farmer will continue to be the owner of his land. Rather, Govt should notify specimen draft agreements to help farmers not to be duped by any legal machinations under contract farming documentation.2. 👉 In no case the new farm law should be annulled. That would be disastrous. Suicidal. Forget the pressure tactics/blackmailing by the visible crowds on media. They’re not a fraction of fraction of the real numbers, who are going to benefit by this law. Imagine what happens if they hit the roads, if the law is abrogated? The same political goons will organise them as well, from behind the scenes. PM Modi’s objective seems to improve the earnings of the farmers, by rescuing them from the clutches of mandi operatives (commissions, price manipulations, expenses, transportation, taxes, botheration, humiliation). Perhaps he wants to incentivise them to improve the quality of their crops (to fetch maximum price); and to improve productivity manifold; with help of contract farming, inducting technology, counselling, consolidation of land, economy of scale, etc. Why such a big reform should be rolled back?👉👉 And, btw, will that not help Govt reduce on (lakhs of crores) of budgets for quarterly doles, subsidies, .... if farmers start earning better on their own?

How will our farming communities cope after Brexit? Will they survive with no cash from Europe, or will they have to diversify to make ends meet, as there will be little to no European involvement? Will they flourish post Brexit?

Brexit could bad news for farming."I make no apology for saying that leaving the EU without a deal would be a catastrophe for British farming.”Minette Batters, President - National Farmers' Union, 19 February 2019DEFRA cabinet minister Michael Gove’s speech to the National Farmers’ Union today makes grim reading. In the event of his government implementing their no-deal Brexit crisis, Mr Gove has confirmed there will tariffs on agricultural imports at WTO non discriminatory rates. It’s not clear yet how the quotas will be divided between EU and non EU countries.WTO trade rules may be good news for beef and dairy farmers who will see farm gate price rises (as the UK is a net importer). But it is bad news for sheep and barley farmers who will see farm gate price falls (as the UK is a net exporter). The farm gate value is the market value of a product minus the selling costs. In his speech, Mr Gove warned that that EU will apply full tariffs to UK farm exports in the event of his government's no deal Brexit crisis. Elsewhere, Mr Gove has reminded his audience that the EU has still have not listed the UK as a full third country. So there is no guarantee that the UK will continue to be able to export to the EU.Unless there’s an agreement, postponement or cancellation, the no-deal Brexit crisis automatically starts in just 38 days’ time.Mr Gove speech is available here: A World To Win
