Logging in/on to a website.A log started life as a lump of wood such as you might throw on a fire. And it still is - sometimes.When sailors wanted to know how fast they were going, they would throw over the stern a log tied to a bit of string with regularly spaced knots in it. By counting the number of knots that went out in a fixed time, they would know their speed - in knots, of course.A navigator would want to have a regular record of this speed, so that he could calculate how fast the ship was travelling then thus roughly where he was. So the speed was written down, initially on a slate but later in a book, which, since it recorded the log measurements, was called the log book, which was later shortened to just the log. (Log book is still current terminology.)Then they started putting other useful navigational information - distances and bearings of landmarks, for example, would be "logged": combined with the speeds, that would give you a better idea of where you were.Then, of course, they started adding other information that they considered interesting: ships passed, on board events. So a log became an ordered record of events. Which it remains in things like Error Logs.And one place that such logs were used was recording arrivals and departures. People at, say, a secure establishment had to sign in when they arrived and sign out when they departed. And what they signed was a log. So the process of signing in and out became known as logging in and out.Then came multi-user computers, which required users to say who they were before starting works, and usually give a password. And to sign off when they freed their terminal. Although there was no visible log, and may not have been one at all, you logged in and out.Then along comes the WWW, and you need to do the same process of announcing yourself and verifying your bona fides to at least some web sites. Which, of course, means logging in.And finally, some people use logging in to a website to just mean opening it in your browser. When what they are actually asking you to do is throw a lump of wood over your shoulder.

Hm, I'm not navy, but from my understanding is that the Belgrano, the Argentine battle cruiser bought 2nd hand off the US navy, was old, was mostly crewed by unseasoned and poorly trained conscripts as were their submarines and frigates. The officers were professional, in fact quite a few had trained in the Royal Navy which meant there was a good understanding of the tactics and capability to be employed against them.The submarine HMS Conqueror, which took out the Belgrano, from 20 odd miles away had a reputation as a top notch machine and crew. (There is an answer to another question on Quora, that the reason the log book of the Conqueror went “missing” was that the submarine had been diverted after a successful mission in the Black Sea to “recover” a top secret Soviet anti-submarine array, and somebody had forgotten to change the log book for a new one. Nobody really expected one of the UK subs on station to go to battle stations and fire torpedoes and sink ship's, but just to emplace and supply special forces onto the islands. The missing logbook caused a stushie at Westminster because the Thatcher government could not produce it and confirm the times and map references served the Falklands of the sinking, without incidentally disclosing what the submarine had been upto before which would have tipped off the Soviets that their secrets had been compromised.)Once the Argentine Admirials realised that their ships were going to be used as target practice, they wisely recalled any ship at sea to put into harbour.

This is my “Monstrous” story.My wife was killed in July 2001 by an semi driver.He was speeding, weighed in at 76,000 lbs. Saw that traffic was backed up, was in a hurry to make up lost time, didn't bother to slow down and ran into the rear of her full size Dodge van.He applied his brakes 30ft from the rear of her van. The skid marks showed this.The collision was so violent that both front wheels were severed off of the semi. The engine entered into the rear of the van caught fire and burned my wife to death.I watched the aftermath of the accident on live TV. A news helicopter was in the area filming an unrelated story.I watched my wife burn to death on live TV.Anyway, to continue. I had all I could do to refrain myself from hunting him down and killing or permanently maiming him.He deprived my two sons from growing up with a most remarkable womanI can say here, that if our two sons had gone with her that morning to her dialysis clinic and died, there is nothing on this planet that would have saved his life from me getting retribution.This douchebag, didn't spend one second in jail, even though he was logging in on three different log books.I wouldn't have killed him immediately.I would have shot him through both knees and elbows, permanently disabling him.As he writhed in pain and agony, I would let him know why I did what I did. Then, I'd decide to kill him or not. I'm still not sure which way I'd go on this.Live and remember every day why he's in the condition he is. Or become worm food.That was sixteen years ago and to this day I think about hunting him down.So, ya humans can go into some dark places.
