Reports today indicate 111 black Americans have been shot by police since George Floyd's death. So, how many other Americans have been killed by police, white, brown, Asian or Indian?

While not on point with the original question one of the responses answering the question brings up a related issue. The article posted by Anonymous from a Yale study is a good example of what Andrew Lang stated, “ Most people use statistics like a drunk man uses a lamppost; more for support than illumination” Two points to consider concerning the Yale study and not the answers to the posted question.First: The authors are analyzing a factually inaccurate assumption in that the Yale article incorrectly assumes that race is the dominate factor in Officer involved shootings. There is no credible evidence that officers involved in the shootings are predominately white as opposed to being minority officers.Recent research reaching that conclusion includes but is not limited to:Officer characteristics and racial disparities in fatal officer-involved shootings; David J. Johnson, Trevor Tress, Nicole Burkel, Carley Taylor, and Joseph Cesario PNAS August 6, 2019 116 (32) 15877-15882; first published July 22, 2019; Officer characteristics and racial disparities in fatal officer-involved shootings Edited by Kenneth W. Wachter, University of California, Berkeley, CA, and approved June 24, 2019 (received for review March 5, 2019) [since retracted] Officer characteristics and racial disparities in fatal officer-involved shootingsRace/ethnicity composition of police officers in officer-involved shootings; January 2020 Policing An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management ahead-of-print(ahead-of-print) DOI: 10.1108/PIJPSM-10-2019-0166; Project: Development of a police officer stress algorithm to prevent adverse events: A mixed-methods approach; (PDF) Race/ethnicity composition of police officers in officer-involved shootingsNEWS RELEASE 22-JUL-2019; Racial disparity in fatal officer-involved shootings Study finds white officers not more likely to shoot minority civilians, violent crime rates biggest predictor of shooting victims' race; UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND; Racial disparity in fatal officer-involved shootingsSecond: The Yale study also ignores the corresponding statistics that shed light on why there may be more shootings of minorities than would be assumed from population representation. Blacks make up roughly 13% of the population. Yet in 2019 there were 10,085,210 arrest for all offenses monitored by DOJ. Of those 7,014,550 were white and 2,667,010 were black. Which means that if you look at “rate” or proportional analysis blacks commit 26% of the crimes, a rate/proportion way out of proportion for their representation in the population at large. For violent crime the numbers are; from a total of 470,890 violent crimes whites committed 276,310 and blacks committed 172,980 blacks which shows blacks are responsible for 36.7% of violent crime again way out of proportion of their population density. Arrests by offense, age, and raceIt is axiomatic that people involved in crime are more likely to have police contact than those not involved in crime. Given the higher proportion of black criminals within their own society and their higher incident of violent crime it is not surprising that there are more police shootings of blacks at the statistical level. One other thing omitted from the studies and social research that shows the overrepresentation of blacks involved in Officer involved shootings is that 14% of Black officers died in the line of duty in 2019. What is needed in my opinion is research that incorporates but is not limited by, on a national scale since a lot of research is local area only research: Race of officer involved; race of the person shot; crime person shot was suspected of; history/complaints on use of force by involved officer; criminal history of person shot. One final note on racial disparity. 80% of the NBA is made up of black players. Blacks are clearly overrepresented in that statistical analysis so is the NBA team makeup race based or talent based?

How does water get to our homes? Then how is it distributed around the house?

This question largely depends on where you live. That way you can determine where to source your water, how to process it (if needed) and how to transport it to where the users are.Since I don't know where you live, I will give a generic answer (but giving emphasis on water supply in cities (especially New York and Los Angeles).SOURCE OF WATERYou can source your water from a variety of place. For freshwater, you can source from springs, rivers, freshwater lake/watershed, well, aquifer (like Ogallala Aquifer or Nubian Sandstone aquifer). For saltwater, you have to desalinate it first. In middle eastern countries where fuel is cheap, boiling the water is not an issue. But in places like California, reverse osmosis plant may be the way to go. For small scale, you can use solar evaporationDifferent places will utilize whatever source that they have. For example, London gets water from River Thames, River Lea, etc. New York gets water from Catskill/Delaware watershed and the Croton watershed (and etc). Los Angeles gets water from Mono Lake (Owen's Lake have already dried up) and Colorado River (and etc). For large cities like San Francisco, it may be necessary to inundate large area for use as water reservoir. One example is the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Below is the before and after picture of the inundation. Most cities recycle their water (i.e. send to wastewater treatment plant). Some of the more sustainable architecture incorporate rainwater collection (like in Ford River Rouge Complex ).PROCESSING/TREATMENTThe composition of water is important. If you are living in a rural area (isolated from city and industrial wastewater discharge and agricultural runoff), you may be able to acquire your freshwater from rivers without processing. Even 18th century Londoners get away with unprocessed freshwater from River Thames. It is only when wastewater discharge gets significant that the river starts to get contaminated with chorela. (Read wiki article: 1854 Broad Street cholera outbreak ).Some microbes can also occur naturally naturally. Some algae can produce toxins like microcystin. [1] And sometimes, it is not about toxin production but rather producing chemicals that makes water taste funny like geosmin.[3] Protozoa like Giardia can also cause problem. [6]Biological contaminant can be removed via processes like UV treatment, chlorine, membrane filtration, etc.Other than biological contamination, chemical makeup is also important. For example, high nitrate content can be unsafe. But you do encounter groundwater supply like in California with high nitrate. Thus you need to process for nitrate removal. Treatment processes includes physical processes (like ion exchange, reverse osmosis), chemical processes (chlorination), and biological processes (like denitrification). For more info, read [2]Though, this does not mean that all chemicals needs to be reduced. But rather it means it needs to be controlled within desired level. Fluoride is a good example which is controlled through water fluoridation. Too much fluoride and you get fluorosis. But too little fluoride and you can get dental cavity. This results from the famous case of fluoride content in water supply in Colorado Spring which causes Colorado Brown Stain [5]. While the residents experienced fluorosis, they lacked tooth decay.I won't be able to cover all composition. You can see from Table below that there are a lot more chemical components that are present. And this is not including toxic chemicals like insecticides, pesticides, chlorinated constituent etc. But in short, the composition of water must meet standard of regulation. And furthermore, most of the facilities recycle wastewater for reuse. And there are too many processes in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for me to cover. So instead, you should read a more proper water treatment textbookTRANSPORTThe distance of pipelines can be pretty long distance (as you will see later). This will incur friction/drag. Furthermore, there will be sections where water will need to be moved up a gradient. Hence, pump stations are placed along the way. The purpose of pumps is to increase the pressure. In San Francisco, Hetch Hetchy Reservoir transfer water through Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct to San Francisco.Though this is nothing compared to Los Angeles. Los Angeles have three major aqueducts (Los Angeles Aqueduct, Colorado River Aqueduct and California ???). More details of Two of the aqueducts are given in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 (where you can see the reservoirs and pumps)In comparison to River Thames, the capacity of these aqueducts are smaller.Fig. 1 Source:You can see several reservoir along the routes for Los Angeles Aqueduct. Los Angeles Aqueduct ends at Van Norman Reservoir. And from Van Norman Reservoir, there will be pumping stations to smaller distribution pipeline to each household.Fig. 2 Source: Wiki article Los Angeles AqueductBelow is a 1938 map of Colorado river aqueduct. (click to enlarge)Fig. 3 Source: [math]www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/citydig-1938-map-details-every-dramatic-stretch-242-mile-long-colorado-river-aqueduct/[/math]Los Angeles transfers water from Colorado River. Colorado River aqueduct uses five pumping stations. The pumps used are huge (see its shaft in Fig. 4) while the pipes are big diameter (see Fig. 5).Fig. 4 source: groksurf.c om /2013/05/20/a-tour-of-hoover-dam-and-the-colorado-river-aqueduct-system/Fig. 5 source:[math][/math][math] groksurf.com/2013/05/20/a-tour-of-hoover-dam-and-the-colorado-river-aqueduct-system/[/math]Los Angeles also relies a lot on recycled water. Here is for West Basin Water Recycling facility. You can see the location of Edward C. Little Recycling facility and Carson Regional Water Recycling plantFig. 6 Source:[math][/math][math] www.westbasin.org/files/uwmp/section-9-recycled-water.pdf[/math]Pumping to each household would require pump station, reservoir, and water tanks (like gravity based water tank). Gravity tanks (or elevated reservoir) can also create pressure. Below is an example:Fig. 7 Source:[math][/math][math] dpw.lacounty.gov/wwd/web/Documents/peir_final/2.0%20Project%20Description_FEIR3.pdf[/math]Now lets talk about New York water system. Some of the challenges of building pipeline in New York is that it have to cross big rivers.Fig. 8 Source: [math]collab.waterrf.org/Workshops/aquatic/Aquatic%20Species%20Presentations/Invasive%20Species%20Concerns%20and%20Control%20Efforts%20in%20New%20York%20City’s%20Water%20Supply%20Watershed.pdf[/math]Fig. 9 source: [math]www.water-technology.net/projects/new-york-tunnel-3/new-york-tunnel-34.html [/math][math][/math][math][/math]So in order to cross big rivers, deep tunnels need to be dug.Fig. 10 Source: [math]www.nyc.gov/html/waterforthefuture/index.shtml[/math]As can be seen, Delaware by-pass is among the deepest pipeFig. 11 Source: [math]www.nap.edu/read/9677/chapter/4#58[/math]And once at the reservoir (Central Park Reservoir and Jerome Park Reservoir etc), there will pumping stations to distribute to smaller water pipe network.Fig. 12 Source:[math][/math][math] www.nap.edu/read/9677/chapter/4#58[/math]There are also stations where you feed chemicals to treat the water. And if I am not mistaken, there is also filtration plant. I couldn't find details on this.Fig. 13 Source: [math]www.nap.edu/read/9677/chapter/4#58[/math]Just to depict how big the project is, this is how big the tunnel that needs to be excavated (using tunnel boring machine) for works on Tunnel no. 3 pipeline.Fig. 14 Source : [math]flatrock.org.nz/topics/environment/new_york_city_water_tunnel_no_3.htm[/math]The bigger pipeline then gets distributed to smaller pipeline/water mains... I couldn't found the map.. but I did find this 3D visualizations of pipeline beneath Lexington Avenue in NYC... Hopefully, you can picture how the network looks.(I also did not find picture of the smaller pump stations in NYC... you just have to know that there are pump stations).Fig. 16 Source: http://www.coned.com/messages/ABSReport.pdfWATER SYSTEM AT YOUR HOUSESource: [math]pt.slideshare.net/prrinskhaleel/sanitary-and-water-supply [/math][math][/math][math][/math]You can see the existence tank (No. 5) at the top level. Houses that have hot water will have hot water heater (No. 8). Pump is not needed because the supply pressure from pump station is enough. And tank No. 5 also supply pressure based on gravity.Source: [math]pt.slideshare.net/prrinskhaleel/sanitary-and-water-supply [/math][math][/math][math][/math]Though the actual system is more complicated than this.REFERENCES:-[1] Water Treatability Database | US EPA https://iaspub.epa.gov/tdb/pages/contaminant/contaminantOverview.do?contaminantId=-1336577584 [2] http://www.deq.state.ms.us/MDEQ....[3] http://www.westlake-tx.org/DocumentCenter/View/682[5]What is “Colorado Brown Stain?” Written by Michael Beasley (2014) What is “Colorado Brown Stain?”[6] https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-10/documents/giardia-factsheet.pdf[7] Wiki article London water supply infrastructure[8] [math]Los Angeles Aqueduct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Aqueduct[/math]Wiki article New York City water supply systemLye in city’s water supply blamed for burnsEast River Repowering Project: Design, Construction and Operationhttp://www.coned.com/messages/ABSReport.pdf
