In my experience, alerting the police did nothing. I had a state police officer come to my house and showed him the threatening and harassing messages and explained the situation. The police officer tried to call the narc but he hung up the phone on him. This did not put an end to the harassment, but did allow me to lay a base for the first of the restraining orders I eventually received against him. The restraining orders keep him at bay because there is a real consequence now, but simply calling the police did nothing. That would probably get a reasonable person to leave you alone, but these are not reasonable people. I think it would be a good idea to let the local police know the situation, and if you can get a police report, that could ultimately help you in court some day if you need to take things further.
