Other times, it is too fast and I miss important details. Don’t you think you are doing students who dislike learning in a lecture environment a disservice, by not providing a comprehensive reading list or distributing lecture notes? As you already know, not everyone learns best by listening to someone lecture, and not every one is really good at being a public speaker…or lecturer. That’s why world class universities like Penn State have whole university-level departments whose job it is to improve classroom teaching…by teaching professors how to teach …and present complex material… and how to use technology in the classroom. In addition, if you are in college, you will notice that you get to evaluate your Professor’s teaching “quality”. Academic administrators and senior professors who evaluate the “newer” professors during their seven year tenure process take these student evaluations very seriously, and require that professors who score low in teaching evaluations take positive steps to improve teaching or be turned down for tenure of fired if they are teaching only one class. In addition, before they are hired, potential new professors typically have to present several “guest” lectures to students and research presentations to faculty. “Bad” teachers do not get hired .Good teachers recognize that not everyone learns best from listening to a lecture, and that not all information is best presented that way. For example, charts and graphs of data, do pretty well in lecture, but other kinds of material is best presented in other ways such as case studies, experiential learning in groups, on-the-job , or hands-on training , or vicariously—by watching others do the required tasks. Because not all topics are best presented in lectures, and not all students learn best by listening , good teachers provide a variety of teaching/learning experiences such as cases studies, group exercises, and role playing exercises as well as lectures.Part of your job as a student is learning how you learn best, and how to transform the learning situation to your advantage. For example, maybe you learn best by reading the text book and instructor handouts. That suggests that you should read the assigned material ahead of time and take notes so that you can follow the lecture better. You then attend the lecture and integrate what the Professor said with your notes. Or maybe you are highly competitive and learn best by setting up study groups to challenge each other’s knowledge. Many graduate and advanced undergraduate students do exactly that—particularly in medicine, law, and engineering.As far as distributing comprehensive reading lists and distributing lecture notes are concerned: The reading list for the course should be integrated into the syllabus together with more advanced readings for those interested . If, by lecture notes, you mean a complete summary of “important” points — some professors do provide that. Some will even post the entire lecture in Webinar form on line. I have actually had a student I didn’t know had trouble hearing, ask me to be sure to face the class when lecturing so he could “read my lips”. They record the lectures and type them out using speech recognition software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking. They bring translators to class (mom, dad, sibling, friend, roommate). They ask their Professors and classmates for help when they need it. They overcome and prevail.
