What are Mormons best known for?

Sadly, the most remembered thing is polygamy, which was banned in 1890 - 128 years ago. It kinda drives me a little nuts that this is the ONE THING that people pay attention to. When it ended over a century ago, why is it still OUT THERE? Because of lunatic offshoots who still practice it and have the audacity to consider themselves “Mormon” when they are really just making up stuff as they go along. Some call themselves FLDS or Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They have all kinds of problems since breaking off from the official Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So, in my mind I wish the public, media and everyone else would GET OVER IT. People make it seem so salacious. From the mouth of my own modern and humorous father, “I could not live through having a second wife. That is crazy talk people.”We don’t judge other religions for what happened in their past, and often have completely and conveniently washed their past sins from our minds. Anyone remember the Crusades? Historians believe that 1.7 million people died during those campaigns. Christian murderers. It is believed that 10,000–50,000 people died in the conquest of Jerusalem alone. (And we wonder why other faiths like Islam are mad or hold a grudge, duh, we go into their countries and murder their citizens wholesale, they are not likely to forget that). We don’t talk about that in the newspapers or magazines, have TV movies or films about it. Christians have a truly violent history, yet never hold themselves accountable, because it happened in the past. Murder has been illegal since the Old Testament. Well, that is a double standard if I’ve ever seen one. Or payment for repentance - selling of indulgences was a payment to the Catholic Church that purchased an exemption from punishment for sins. Cheat on wife? No worries just fork out the cash to the priest and all is forgiven. Not cool. And so easily forgotten over the years. The examples are endless, but its the LDS/Mormon polygamy that the public won’t let go of.What I wish we were known for:Caring about others within and outside the faith.“Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” ~Jesus Christ (Matthew 25:40)We have a facility in Utah called Welfare Square. “Welfare Square has a cannery, bakery, milk processing plant, thrift store, and other Church facilities that serve the poor and needy around the world.”Welfare Facilities—Welfare SquareWe have a humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City where humanitarian supplies are acquired in or near the area where they are needed. The humanitarian supplies required by the Church include clothing, hygiene and school kits, emergency medical modules, and quilts. These items are processed and prepared for shipment to where they are needed most. In a typical year, the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center will ship about 8 million pounds of shoes and clothing, 300,000 hygiene and school kits, and 12,000 quilts to relieve suffering in more than 50 countries.Latter-day Saint Humanitarian CenteraWe have an organized volunteer service called Helping Hands. Service to others is an important characteristic of the followers of Jesus Christ. Mormon Helping Hands provides organized opportunities for Church members to give their time and talents to bless those in need. It also gives members the opportunity to beautify city streets, parks, schools, and recreational areas and to serve in other ways, showing that the Church is a friend to the community. Often Helping Hands is a presence during the recovery of major disasters in the United States and abroad.Helping HandsA larger organization that encompasses many different initiatives comes through LDS Charities: Sustainable food practices, improved nutrition, food storage, water systems, clean water hygiene training, immunization in poor and underserved areas, maternal and newborn care, refugee responses, vision care and wheelchairs.LDS CharitiesThe bishop (head of a LDS/Mormon congregation) has the responsibility to care for the poor and needy within the boundaries of his congregation. One resource available to accomplish this task is the bishops’ storehouse—a place where those in need can go to obtain food and other supplies like food, hygiene products and cleaning supplies. “While storehouses provide many of the same services as any retail food store, not one has a cash register. … These are goods that money cannot buy. No price tag is put on the time, effort, and love so generously contributed to the common good of those in need.” ~ Thomas S. MonsonWhat is a bishops' storehouse?

Does an NFL team winning games mean its quarterback is good?

Not necessarily. A mediocre quarterback in a good system with lots of talent around him can win a lot of games. Pro Football Focus shows us how to analyze a quarterback’s play by isolating his role in every play:(Note some of embedded video may not have pasted well, so I suggest clicking the link below to see everything as the author intended. I also want to note one quibble I have with the below analysis - it does not adjust for the strength of the defense and the situation. Eg, completing a pass for 11 yards on 3rd down and 20 against a terrible defense is a lot easier than completing a pass for 11 yards on 3rd and 10 against a great defense)https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-how-pff-grades-quarterback-playThe PFF grading system is all about isolating the quarterback’s performance on a given play. We bring context to every throw, with a focus on timing, decision-making, accuracy and much more. Raw passing stats are often a gauge of the passing offense, and pass defense, as a whole, the PFF system is measuring the quarterback’s contribution to that production.[Editor’s Note: Here’s a link to an article Steve Palazzolo and Sam Monson wrote on why PFF’s grading system is the most effective quarterback evaluation method currently available.]The play-by-play grading ranges from +2 throws, which are extremely rare:to -2 throws, which consist of the most egregious decisions:POSITIVELY GRADED PLAYS:Accuracy and decision-making are all baked into the play-by-play grading, with positive grades being earned on passes that lead to first downs and more. The system accounts for the timing and difficulty of the throw, while also gauging the decision-making with respect to the quarterback’s progression on a given play. The better the throw, the higher the grade, and passes that earn a +1.0 or better are considered big-time throws:The key to remember is that the result of the play doesn’t change the quarterback’s grade, so pinpoint downfield passes that are dropped will still earn the same grade despite showing up as 0-for-1 in the boxscore:Big-time throws have different levels of credit as the passes are thrown further down the field or the windows are tightened.NEGATIVELY GRADED PLAYSPasses that are missed, or ones that essentially ensure an incompletion, will earn a negative grade.Passes that are graded as -1.0 or worse will receive the “turnover-worthy label” as interceptions occur on about 50% of such throws, and that percentage rises as the grade lowers:Of course, just like the positively-graded plays, we are evaluating each throw individually and the result will not change the grade. The worst throws that result in dropped interceptions will still receive a harsh downgrade:SAME PLAY, DIFFERENT RESULTSThat brings us to the scenario in which two quarterbacks make a similar throw, but with entirely different results. There may be no better example than the NFC Divisional Playoffs last season that saw Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky make near-identical poor throws into the end zone, one of which was intercepted and one of which was dropped. Both throws received harsh downgrades despite one getting intercepted and crushing Foles’ boxscore stats, while Trubisky’s merely resulted in an incompletion.EXPECTED PLAYSThere are many throws which fall into the “expected” category, and they will fall into the 0-graded category. Screen passes are a good example of this as we expect NFL quarterbacks to throw these passes with timing and accuracy. As always, the result of the play does not change the grade for the quarterback, whether the pass is taken for a touchdown.Or stopped for a two-yard gain:A wide receiver may break a tackle for a touchdown on a quick out against off coverage:Or he may be tackled short of the end zone, but it’s essentially the same throw by the quarterback. There are many plays in which the result of the play is purely down to the receiver making a play against the defender, and we are sure to isolate the QB’s grade away from the result.A 50-50 jump ball is often down to WR/CB interaction, so the difference in a completion:or an incompletion, will not change the QB’s grade.THE QB’S ROLE IN PASS PROTECTIONWe also take seriously the QB’s role in mitigating the pass-rush. We will downgrade QB’s for holding the ball too long and taking unnecessary sacks. When it comes to fumbles, they are not all created equally. Some fumbles are almost impossible to avoid for a quarterback, and they will earn a 0 grade:However, the fumbles that are clearly the result of poor ball security will get a harsh downgrade, and that grade will remain the same regardless of which team recovers the ball. The PFF grading system isolates the quarterback’s play in a unique way, and it has proven to be both descriptive of what happened on the field and predictive of what will happen. When paired with the information contained within the PFF database, it’s a necessary tool in player evaluation and roster building.
