Persons who are deaf but not dumb, or persons who are dumb but not deaf, are not to be reported.When I look at the records for my own ancestors alive in 1910, there are many other symbols in those columns than allowed by the instructions above. The 1910 US Census was tabulated by entering the data onto punch cards, called Hollerith cards (Hollerith was the predecessor to IBM). After the enumerators handed in their pages of data, staff in the office used those three columns to indicate the code on the punch cards to use for Occupation and Industry (columns 18 and 19). Not many Civil War veterans were alive in 1910, (US Civil War, fought from 1860 to 1865, 45 years prior to that Census) so the column was generally blank. The Bureau of the Census did not use that tally to learn how many survivors there were. Apparently not many people were totally blind in both eyes, or both deaf and dumb (unable to speak), leaving those columns mainly blank during enumeration, and thus handy to use for the aggregation of the data using the punch cards.Thus it is wise to ignore the marks shown on an original 1910 Census form for columns 30, 31, and 32, as it will not reveal useful information about your ancestor.If your ancestor did fight in the Civil War , you must use other sources than that 1910 Census to learn that or confirm it. You would know that your ancestor lived in 1910 by finding the person in the old Census records, but their military service would not be noted there.
