PDF Editor FAQ

As a libertarian, what would you like to tell democrats?

You guys used to be cool…You were all about legalizing drugs, ending wars, separation of church and state, and leaving people the hell alone. You used to preach that women were strong and independent. Now you’re saying a man can be a woman. You used to say that the individual mattered and we should judge people by their character. Now you want to group different people by immutable characteristics. You used to try to improve racial relationships by sharing culture and exposing people to new things. Now you call whites racist and worry about appropriation. You used to argue that Hispanics and blacks should have better access to education. Now you are against charter schools on behalf of the unions. You used to be all about equal treatment under the law. Now you want to have certain groups favored. You used to support religious critics like Bill Maher, Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. Now you’re calling them bigoted against Muslims. You used to support unions and blue-collared white Americans in the middle of the country. Now you’re calling them the oppressors. You used to understand that capitalism was good (though argued it needed some restraint), and understood the evils of socialism. Now you're arguing for a system that has killed millions of people. You used to be the champions of free speech, and argued that the right was necessary to speak truth to power. Now you argue to censor speech and silence opposition. You used to hate on Bush for 8 years for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now you’re silent about the 8 years of war under Obama. You used to be big into ending the crack epidemic since it mostly affected minorities, but now you’re silent about opioids and meth since it’s whites who are most affected. You used to be cool… what happened to you?Edit: For those of you who think I’m some kind of transphobic monster, let me clarify my point. I have nothing against transpeople. But my issue is that we spend years pushing for women’s spaces where they can exchange ideas comfortably, without fearing non-women interference. They have organizations, communities and sports. Now if there is any resistance to allowing a transwoman into a women’s sport, that resistance is seen as transphobic. We see Jenner winning woman of the year award, when there have been women facing discrimination or challenges their whole lives - who have had to fight for their voices - but are overlooked because a transwoman took the spotlight.I don’t think it’s fair to women, and it’s not hateful to think so.Also, I am not saying that tranpeople deserve less rights. I’m saying that you can’t change your sex. So a man can’t be a woman. A transwoman is just that… a TRANSwoman. This doesn't mean they are less or deserve less. I’m not even saying they shouldn’t use bathrooms of their choice. What about the children who said they were transgender – and then changed their minds?Lastly, I’m not saying Democrats or liberals are bad people. I’m saying your policies have changed and your attitude. I used to be one of you, but you’ve left me

The FBI has been asked to investigate whether a hoaxer offered women money to make false allegations about Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. What would they gain from this?

It’s incoherent logic—if you create “dirt” on Mueller by paying women to claim that he harassed them, then it somehow makes his investigation less credible because we can’t trust people who abused women. So therefore, Donald Trump, accused of sexual assault or harassment by 12 different women, must be the victim of a witch-hunt. At least that’s the logic behind this slimy and illegal behavior.Robert Mueller is one of the most upstanding individuals to ever hold a senior Federal government appointed position in the past several decades. He is willing to speak truth to power.I do not pretend to know what his investigation will conclude. But I will accept whatever he concludes. He is an individual of high integrity. These efforts to create lies about him are despicable and also set a terrible trend for what future law enforcement individuals might face. A corporation might attempt to embarrass a prosecutor, or a defendant might seek to fabricate dirt about an attorney even when it’s not relevant to the case or their credibility. There’s the implication that someone that did something wrong can’t be believed.

What are your thoughts on political satire (Last Week Tonight, Daily Show, etc.)?

Playing to the gallery.Speaking here for American evening and late night TV political satire. There’s nothing quite as amusing as watching comedians act all “heroic” as if they were “speaking truth to power”, while the unvarnished truth in plain sight is that they won’t deviate even by a millimeter from their political team’s playbook.I don’t blame them. They know which side butters their bread.I used to like Jon Stewart. Now he was partisan for sure - go back and watch the episodes when he had Obama come on his show. The brown-nosing was near cringeworthy, made you say “I sure hope Obama has a tight belt around those trousers he’s wearing!”Stewart’s go-to line was always “Oh, I’m just a comedian. My show is sandwiched between puppets playing phone pranks. What do you expect?” It was a humble brag. That said, the man was often witty. And likable too.But I never found Stephen Colbert all that funny even. Ever.Satire is a dish that tastes good only when served dry.Colbert’s brand of “satire” (if you could call it that) is about as sharp and crisp as a biscuit drenched in gravy. All the running into his set, hands waving, annoying his guests with stupid questions. The man completely over does it.It’s as if he either doesn’t trust the audience to get the joke without whacking them over the head repeatedly with it, or that his audience actually loves comedy that is more akin to slapstick humor. Probably a mix of both but more of the latter than the former.Trevor Noah?I sympathize with this man. He’s a nice guy but Stewart is a hard act to follow. And progressives want him to drop any pretense of not trying to be a political hack and simply go for it, be their clown with a hatchet. But there’s other men, and women, who can do that job better. So the poor fellow manages to make nobody happy. And finally, John Oliver?Okay this guy has some serious talent. But he’s also arguably the most disingenuous of the lot.I like watching some of his episodes where he exposes certain rackets like the one I remember him doing on car loans. But then I remember starting to watch one in which he spoke about Ayn Rand. Now I’m no libertarian but the misrepresentation of her views was simply dishonest. I mean find enough chinks in your opponent’s armor to hit them there, don’t just straight up lie about what their views are.But unfortunately, that’s what it has come to.None of these men will ever dare question in a seriously mocking manner, any of the progressive shibboleths. Not one among them.Just look at Bill Maher and the flak he got for speaking out against radical Islam. His audience was cheering from the rooftops when he mocked religions - so long as it was about Christianity.Yes, I’ll admit it was all very impressive, given how we all have come by now to cower in fear about the local archbishop dispatching his men to finish off anyone who dares speak out against the church, much less impugn the holy name of Christ. But careful there, the moment he extended that mockery to Islam, he got a taste of what it is like to really speak truth to power. Sorry, that one’s simply off limits Bill. You didn’t bother to read the rule book now, did you?I once watched Maher give a stand up show about a decade ago at Cornell University (it’s his alma mater). It was around the time that he came out with the movie Religulous. And his mocking of faiths was incredibly popular among progressives then…. so long as he stuck to mocking the ‘correct’ one/s. But I’ll bet a fair amount of money that he isn’t getting invited to Cornell again anytime soon. No, it’s not very pleasant. He still does it anyway and I applaud him for it. He does not have the comedic talent of Stewart but certainly has bigger balls than Jon.We all like to think that we’d metaphorically ride into battle in the face of danger looking all proud, not a hint of fear. The truth is often very different. And not very flattering. So call me when you hear Noah or Oliver make fun of or even seriously question one of the political darlings du jour of the left, or mock one of their holy cows.Don’t hold your breath for it to happen. They have a show to run. They know their audience. They need to please that audience. And they won’t bite the hand that feeds them. And once again, it’s totally understandable and I don’t blame them. I’d probably do likewise if I were in their shoes.Oh they’ll keep up a show alright, of standing up to the king with the nerve of the court jesters of old. They’re not.Because the king here, the one who holds real and actual power over their careers and massive paychecks, is their left-wing audience. And in that analogy they’re not like the court jesters, more like the king’s courtiers.Funny ones albeit, but courtiers all nonetheless. And it's about as “brave” as having to wear an American flag pin and cry “Ahh! Motherland!” on Sean Hannity’s show.Edit - Adding in an image of this rather amusing tweet below, sent to me courtesy of Luis Galvez . Not sure if each of these fellows have the “same stance on every issue” though. They’re all plenty smart men and there no doubt exists a good deal of nuance among their stances. But it’s a rather neat snapshot of how there isn’t all that much variety in terms of broad political opinions among the spectrum of late night hosts (diversity here seems limited to program time slots and TV channels).Note: Bill Maher is arguably the most centrist figure in this entire picture.
