And a free train pass for life to get around England - and Scotland. (To a particular town that starts with a “P”.)And because it’s a dream item I’d never spend the money on, two first class tickets to some spa that will totally pamper us every day for a week. Or two. Or month. With fruity cocktails delivered at our whim (with tiny umbrellas and fruit garnishes), daily massages, a few facials just to enjoy the experience (the first should take care of clearing my pores), a mani-pedi until I find just the right nail color with hand and feet wax treatments, a mud bath or two, a beautician who will send me home with every product I could ever want or need, a hair stylist who will give me the perfect cut, color, and highlights, and world class food delivered to our room so we’d never have to interact with people except for those performing the provided services. Plus the best room with an ocean view and the most perfect bed and duvet and pillows so we can sleep like royals. And a private pool we could skinny-dip in at night with a hot tub to relax in afterwards. *sigh* That would be paradise.

Having worked as a nurse for 20 years these are some nice things I would like when looking back. If it were someone who could afford it I would have loved to have had a nice stethoscope. A gift certificate to a store that sells Dansko shoes. A nice pen light that isn’t going to break after the first week . A box full of disposable stationary gifts such as pens and highlighters. Just make sure you get plenty of pens and not any kind you are afraid would be stolen. Red pens are always a must. A gift certificate to a nice coffee shop. A gift certificate to a nearby uniform shop. A gift certificate for a pedicure. A gift certificate for a massage. An IOU for so many times of watching the kids when they were sick and couldn’t go to school. A few psychology visits on how to confront aggressive people. A nice pair of cotton pj’s to comfy up in after my shower and a long day at work. Some really good hand and foot lotion. Nice ice pack and heating pad. An IOU certificate for so many rides to work in the inclement weather if you know someone willing that has 4 Wheel Drive. A gift certificate from a maid service or a lawn care service. A gift certificate from a restaurant who does good take out. Chinese food is the first thing that comes to mind but a good pizza would work. Some nice thick white socks with some good support hose. Some good ointment to rub on sore muscles. If all else fails a gift certificate to Amazon lol. Come on there nurses chip in with something that I haven’t already mentioned.

If someone gave me a book with sentences highlighted, not only would I not read that book, I’d probably dump that friend. Thanks, but no. It’s bullshitty enough that you’re giving me something that you think I ought to read because it was meaningful to you, which hey, isn’t a gift, it’s a bit of homework* and now you want to point out the bits that were meaningful to you so I can know what they are in advance of the quiz? Or WHAT did you do that for?Markup your own books. Give me a gift certificate and I’ll get myself something I want to read.*You may wonder why I think of it as homework. Your thoughts went something like this - “This book was very meaningful to me. I bet Erica would gain something from it too.” What you forgot to do was the bit where you remember that Erica loathes meaningful self-help books “Oh, but Erica doesn’t like this kind of book. Let me get her something she will enjoy. Or, if I can’t find anything, I’ll get her a gift certificate - which she has repeatedly said she favors.”You forgot to think about the recipient as a separate person from you. You want them to read the book they same way you did and to understand it the way you did so they can validate your reading of it. That’s selfish on every level. If you really value the friend, you’ll let them get their own insights and then discuss those with them.
