Tactical oilfield operations aren't lightbulbs where you can flip a switch to turn off a light. When you drill, case, complete and flowback a series of wells on a pad, the oil will continue to flow without any assistance for a period of year (initially at a high rate, decaying over time). So, you have now produced those 60,000 bbl at an all-in cost of $98/bbl, instead of the earlier $30/bbl if you were to let that well keep flowing.The core problem is that your marginal cost to produce that next bbl is only your lease operating expenses, which is in the $10/bbl range - meaning that your optimal course of action is to keep letting the well flow, as long as market prices remain above $10/bbl. This is extrapolated from a real example for a horizontal well in Texas.However, the reality is even a little more difficult because geological formations don't behave like light bulbs. Very often, if you shut production in from a completed well, when you open the chokes up a year or two later, the well will not flow again. In that case, you need to recomplete the well, at a cost of another $300K - $500K, which means that your all in total cost continues to rise even higher.This is further compounded by the reality that most of these drillers didn't use cash on hand to acquire, drill, case and complete that well. They borrowed that money from a creditor and promised that creditor a steady stream of interest and principal payments over a term that is a significant fraction of the expected flow life of that well. So, to make these monthly payments, you have an added strong incentive to continue to let that well flow all the way down to $10/bbl.Given these realities for your typical operator, you can see why it is financially counterproductive to shut production in, even after a market price collapse, as long as the current market price is above your marginal cost of $10/bbl to produce that next bbl of oil.
