He required 14 stitches on his forehead. Long ago in a hospital far far away there was a doc who loved pediatrics and all pediatrics rotations. Pediatricians and the peds nurses were wonderful, compassionate caregiversfast forward a couple of years. We did see child abuse and it broke all our hearts. a case went to court where a couple was accused of the death of their foster child. This was not a one time occurrence as there was evidence of old and new injuries. And at autopsy the bruising would have made a prizefighter cry. This was a time when autopsy photos could be shown on the news. I will never forget the face of that beautiful child…the accused perpetrators? One of our beloved pediatrics nurses and her bf.the child had been seen in clinics and any small injuries had been glossed over as childhood injuries. There are laws that require reporting of suspected child abuse. But perhaps the “ overlooking” was because this was a BELOVED RN in pediatrics and people (including docs) believed her. Or didn’t want to believe that it could be child abuseI did not follow the case ( it was just going to court ) and moved on. It was said that she was covering for her BF who inflicted the ( fatal) injuries. But the malpractice lies with all. Including heran innocent child was betrayed not only by the profession but by her caregivers.As for mandatory reporting— there are certain injuries that REQUIRE reporting. One is a spiral fracture of a long bone. Well a colleague had rambunctious preteens who were jumping around on a bunk bed ( ignoring parental admonition). One pushed the other who fell off the top bunk and caught his foot in something twisting the leg. Immediately to ER. Immediately treated but the injury was “flagged”. It took an inordinate amount of time to clear this poor doc. Even though everyone involved corroborated the story
