How do you escape a restaurant after a meal without paying?

I worked at a restaurant, and a “Homeless Guy” came in and ordered a large meal.At the end of the meal, he let the server know that he couldn’t pay for the meal. It was very clear that he wasn’t afraid of the consequences. The manager got involved, and they decided to call the police. The police gave the manager several options including having the man work off his meal, but his advice was to simply let the man go. And that is what ended up happening. In NJ if the value of the property or services is less than $200.00 it is considered “Theft as a Disorderly Persons Offense.” or “Petty Theft”. This could carry 6 month jail and/or up to $1,000.0 fine. The reason the Policeman didn’t recommend arresting the man, which was given as an option to the manager was that in this case the man didn’t have anything, so other than tying up the system, there wasn’t much of a chance that he would be prosecuted, and there was a big chance that there would be a scene when they took him away.Recently I went to a restaurant and as I was being seated I noticed that I forgot my wallet. I let them know, and they actually let me enjoy my meal, and I agreed to come back the next day. I don’t know that this would work every time, but generally a restaurant is a business, and a generous move like that will have a very big return in customer loyalty.I do know that Dine and Dash can be a prank, and besides being a crime with a risk, it is just a terrible thing to do to your server. The Server will be blamed for letting you leave without paying. Even if they are not made to pay your bill, they provided their service, and didn’t receive their tip which is the bulk of their pay, so you are personally stealing from them as well.

How does one become a freelance coder?

Freelance programmer here (oDesk, working as Android app developer). There is not a sure-shot "procedure" of becoming a freelance programmer. If you are asking what steps should you take, or what you should be doing in order to find and work on freelance programming jobs, here's a quick guide.Know what you love to do. That may be a programming language you want to work on, or a platform you want to write codes for. You should have good programming skills in the first place to get started with a job of a programmer. You will be writing codes. A lot of code.Don't only be a "coder" or "programmer". Learn communication skills, basic contract handling skills, learn a bit about tax and finance laws about software products. Know how to manage a project. You'll need those skills in some point of your freelance programming career.Learn about version control, unit tests, debugging and documentation tools. Be comfortable with at least one IDE. Learn to set up your platform of work (OS, packages, IDE, documentation, etc.) on your own. You have no idea whether your clients will want you to work over SSH. *This is a rare case but you must be ready.Learn to read other people's codes. You will not get fresh projects from all your clients. Many tasks will involve continuing an abandoned project, or adding features or debugging a project started by amateur (learner, or lazy) programmers.Make an online presence. Have your personal web space, where you list your projects, experiences and interests. You can also mention what kind of projects/jobs you are interested in, what you are currently working on, etc. You can also put your CV over there for potential clients to read.Give away some source codes you have written to the open source community. Your potential clients will take that as a huge plus point and you'll be counted as an "experienced" programmer who has been contributing to open source projects. Also show off your skills on forums like Stackoverflow, Askubuntu, Serverfault, Superuser, etc. Good reputation on those sites are a huge plus points. When you develop some reputation on such sites (say, after 3 - 6 months), show off on your homepage.Finding freelance programming jobs is not that hard today. There are several online freelance job sites (oDesk + Elance, Freelancer, Guru, Toptal, etc. to name few). Those can be your options in the beginning. If you go for local clients, go for them. Local clients are better to work with than remote clients.Contact local software companies, web/app development firms and apply for freelance jobs. Build cool stuff in your spare time and add a "I am available for freelance programming jobs." in all your products. Do anything you can do to earn more projects. Charge your clients on hourly basis whenever applicable.Learn about "Contract Killer". There's a Github gists repo out there. This will be required from the first day of your first project discussion with your first client.Be ready for challenges. Set a routine, and keep aside working hours. Don't work from your couch, bed, dining table, shower or comot. Don't work from your classroom or movie theatre. Be professional. Act professional, you are now a jobholder.First few months might be hard. My first freelance programming job was to create a groupon-like site for $2.12/hour. The project was dropped and client was out of contact after few days. I was out of job for two weeks at some point. I was lucky to get some debugging and script fixing jobs in the early stage, which got me going. Your story might be different.Remember, freelance programmers are not entrepreneurs. When you are working as a freelance programmer build something as a side project that will bring you some money (or may be a lot of money :) after few months or years).I don't know whether I answered your queries but I'm sure it will help you or someone willing to get started with freelance programming job.

Did you ever have a restaurant meal “on the house”? What was the reason?

I have and it came as a complete surprise to my wife and I.We were in a slightly upscale Italian restaurant in Northern New Jersey (Bergen County) and enjoyed our entire meal from appetizers to desert. It was going to be a hefty bill but I knew that before we went and I thought it was going to be worth it.The owner came over and told us that he was comping the entire meal because “we waited too long for our food and that is not something he allows to happen to his patrons no matter who they are.”I then noticed that our waitress had her coat on and was looking daggers at us for some reason. Apparently the owner had fired her for not doing her job properly. I felt bad for the waitress but I guess they owner had tough standards which makes sense given the reputation the place had for quality and service.Another time I was in a breakfast place in Pennsylvania (forget where in PA) and our order got screwed up six ways from Sunday and had to be “fixed” multiple times. “I ordered *** and got ***” kinds of screwed up. We finally got what we ordered and how we ordered it and we were still going to give the poor waitress a good tip because I had the feeling she was just having a bad day. When she gave us our bill the manager came over the picked it up (not before I saw what we owed) and told is that breakfast was on him. I did leave an appropriate tip for the waitress anyway… poor kid earned it as far as I was concerned.More recently my wife and I decided to have lunch at a trendy place in Ocean Grove NJ after I had “marched” in the Memorial Day parade. Marched in this case involved me riding my mobility scooter behind the color guard I used to be captain of.Salads in this trendy place were not cheap but I am not a cheapskate and if eating there made my bride of 42 years happy it was worth the money as far as I’m concerned. Keep in mind our anniversary was the very next day.We finished and I was expecting the bill and our waitress came over and said “your bill has been covered” but wouldn’t tell me who to thank. I dropped a $20 bill on the table for the waitress. Worth. Every. Penny.Original Question: Did you ever have a restaurant meal “on the house”? What was the reason?
