I just graduated from Gunn High School in the class of 2013, and the district had already implemented the pre-Christmas finals for the 2012-13 school year. As to the suicides, starting in my 8th grade year (2008-09?) a few students from Stanford University and the Palo Alto high schools committed suicide on the Caltrain tracks due to the stress of finals and whatnot. My memory is a bit fuzzy on this part, but perhaps if you search Palo Alto Online or the Palo Alto Weekly the timeline goes back far enough...?In the following years, there appeared some surveys about stress and the finals schedule--specifically, people claimed that having finals after winter break didn't allow students to completely relax during the break, and only heightened their stress for the holidays. On the other hand, pre-Christmas finals would interfere with college applications for the seniors, and would pile on stress before the holidays.In 2012, the start of school was moved forward about 2 weeks so that the first semester finals would fall before winter break. For me, the timeline suggests at least a bit of a causal link between the suicides and the schedule change, but I was just a student, uninterested in the policies and goals of the school district.
