Many Oklahoma school districts have reduced their school weeks to four days a week in order to cut costs. This is not a state-wide mandate, and there are districts that have not (yet) implemented such measures, but the number of districts taking such cost-cutting measures has increased over the last few years.As of the end of May, 96 out of 513 districts in Oklahoma have dropped either Friday or Monday off their school calendars; this is triple the number in 2015 and quadruple the number in 2013. 44 more are considering such measures for the upcoming 2017–2018 school year.Oklahoma is not the only state doing this, either: it’s also shown up in Colorado, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho. Most of them have accomplished the change in conjunction within a longer school day, which nominally means that students get roughly the same number of instructional hours a year. This results in significant savings, especially for rural districts, for whom student transportation is a significant expense and the cut of a single day provides an immediate 20% reduction in student transportation costs (buses only run 4 days a week, not 5).I take no position on whether this can be “blamed” on “tax cuts to the wealthy citizens”.
