It’s not a steaming-hot warzone full of black malnourished poor people.Not everyone is black. In fact, Africa is the most diverse when it comes to skin colors: We have white people in the South all the way to black people in the center and light-skinned people in the north.It’s not always hot. Yes, some countries do have high temperatures but it’s not like what you think - it gets cold during the winter in some countries, and in some, it even snows!Not everyone’s poor. Of course there are many poor people in Africa, but not everyone is as poor as you think. Thousands of languages are spoken in Africa, there are around 200 religions and around 50 countries Africa (?). African is not a language (there’s Afrikaans but not everyone speaks it.) This is quite sad, but thankfully I have a sense of humour and tend not to take things to heart too much, especially when delivered from a place of ignorance.My youngest daughter's birthday was in July and she was turning 15. She was a bit of a fussy eater and as a result of that doesn’t like birthday cakes. When I asked her what cake would she like, she asked for jam doughnuts. I decided I’d give her a mountain of doughnuts, with sparklers and fancy candles to make something special of it for her.So there I am, in the queue at the supermarket, loading my ‘birthday bits’ onto the conveyer belt. I had sparklers, birthday cards, wrapping paper, 2 bags of jam doughnuts, some ring doughnuts, and some fairy cakes for her sisters as well. Now at this point I should mention that I’m in a wheelchair and I’m also grossly overweight.The customer in front of me turned and watched me load my items. She looked at me, then the doughnuts, and back to me and said, “I guess you must really like eating doughnuts then" It’s sad because in her ignorance she just saw a fat woman and bags of doughnuts.She completely ignored all the birthday bits, instead choosing to think the worst:obese person=eats cakes.She didn’t see the disabled mum who’s struggled to maintain her independence for the last three years. She didn’t see the mum who still has to care for her disabled daughter, whilst her other two daughters care for her. She didn’t see the courage it takes for me to go out after having gained a lot of weight since being ill because of medication and other factors, knowing people like her will judge me. She didn’t see the salad I had for dinner the night before and every other day before that because I’m desperately trying to lose this weight. She didn’t see ME, all she saw was a fat person buying doughnuts.It hurts for that brief moment, but I’m stronger than that. I will not allow another person's ignorance to make me feel embarrassed or ashamed of something I haven’t done. She judges me, but I’ll always pity her. I wouldn’t swap places with her for the world.
