That life can change dramatically in an instant.In the late 90’s I was a PhD student. I worked extremely hard at my research, as I really, really wanted that doctorate. I didn’t have time for a job because of the amount of studying I was doing. This is not unusual amongst high academia.I applied for, and was given, a living maintenance grant from the university, thanks to a private donor. This paid my rent, reasonable bills and food and clothing for the duration. Every month a certain amount was credited to my bank account, almost like a welfare benefit payment, and that’s what I used to pay my expenses. My rent was never paid late. Not once.One particular week I had been working extremely hard, and I remember it being extremely frustrating because nothing was working the way it was designed to. I decided to take the weekend off, relax, rethink and get back to the lab on the monday morning.That didn’t go the way I was thinking it would.On the saturday morning I woke up, went downstairs and made some breakfast. I turned on the TV and started watching the shows I had recorded during the week. Relaxing for the first time in months felt amazing.Then my landlord walked through the door.The fact that this was illegal in and of itself told me something bad was about to happen. This guy was 6′4″ of bad tempered, aggressive muscle. If he told you to jump, you didn’t stop to ask how high, you started jumping.He informed me - in a quite calm but menacing way - that he was selling the house and I had an hour to get my stuff and get out. He made it extremely clear what would happen if I refused. Needless to say that wasn’t an option.This was a 2 bedroom house I was renting. Getting my stuff out in an hour was impossible, and I had nowhere to take it either. I knew I was about to lose everything I owned.I spent the majority of that hour trying to find a screwdriver so I could remove the hard drive from my computer so I didn’t lose all my research I had worked so hard on. Taking the computer itself wasn’t an option as it was a big, bulky 90’s desktop.I wrapped it up in a few layers of clothing, grabbed my camping stuff and a few changes of clothes, plus whatever else I could find and left.I went straight to the police but while they were sympathetic, what he did was a civil offence, not a criminal one. This is different now. They couldn’t help me.I had two options available for taking him to court - paying myself or applying for legal aid. Paying myself wasn’t an option as the filing fee was nearly £400. I had £38 left in my bank account from that months payment. The second option, legal aid, required the person to be in receipt of welfare benefits. Needless to say, at the time I didn’t get any.In either case, the most the courts could have done is get me back in the house, whereupon he could immediately - and legally - issue me an eviction notice. So my choices would be become homeless now, or become homeless in a month and be £400 out of pocket.My life changed the instant he walked through that door, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

Wow, I was a property manager in South Florida and had a cute 2 bed unit in quiet complex, quiet area the search begins. I get a call from an older lady and asked all questions that I have found decides for me at least the reasons of tenants wanting your unit you are offering. Why are you moving? her: I want to be near my daughter and granddaughter, to help babysit and get out of the South Florida area. Great! What do you do for work? I’m semi-retired and have worked for DCF(dept. of Families)(which you must have a clean background since you are dealing with children , and the state) have an income. Great is it 3x’s the rent?( reason is this includes other costs of living i.e. utilities, food, insurance car & health, gas and maintainance of your vehicle, then miscellaneous ouch! Yes I do she states! Great I need an application and a background check for $100 done will that work for you? I don’t want $$$ if you are’nt going to pass! Yes she says but there may be issues but I feel confidant. OK I say if you want to spend the money let’s do it, besides she said if I get this beautiful unit i’ll be leaving in a pine box and we both laughed! Background and credit ran. I get the report and low and behold I have recieved the wrong report! The report stated this lady was a felon, prostitute and drug addict!!!Whaaaaaat OMG!!!I called the reporting agency I think there’s a mistake back and forth etc. So I called my little old lady what;s this report about the say its right but I thought it was wrong?? NO I’m sorry Patti yes this is me after my divorce my life spiraled down and I messed up all that is true please take a chance on me, I won’t let you down!! OMG (perfect word) I was in a conundrum. I meet with her daughter and discussed this issue and spoke with owner and we all decided if we should take her as client.Well she’s still there and still paying and still being a great person 6 years later andshe calls me to say how she is doing and life is good. Love my job.IMO everyone who is true deserves a 2nd chance, the decision of a true person is what is a conundrum.Good luck be good and if you mess up try to do better! There is someone who will take a chance if you are true and honest also a HARD WORKER! GOOD LUCK!
