PDF Editor FAQ

Is Kerala indeed God's own country?

Scenic beauty, they say! Well, okay! That’s not entirely wrong, but it’s pretty far from being right!Among the several myths and legends that go around pertaining to the origins of Kerala, one of them is its the creation at the hands of Parasuram, a warrior hunk of a sage.(Art: Vimanika www.vimanika.com) Phew! Check out the almost 0% body fat on that bod! Damn!Anyway, Parasuram was the 4th son of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka and the 6th incarnation of Vishnu who also learnt his mad axe wielding skills from Shiva. The word Parasu means 'axe' in Sanskrit and thus, Parasuram directly translates to 'Ram with an Axe'.When his father suspected his mom of an illicit sexual thought, he ordered Parasuram to cut her head off, something which the ever obedient son did without batting an eye. Turns out, being an obedient lad had its perks! So, after killing his mother ,Parsuram's father was so overcome (with whatever!) that he asked his son to seek any boon. Ask, and thy shall receive! So, he asked his father to revive his mother, which he did. So, that happened!Later, his father gets killed by a Kshatriya named Shastrajun for a holy cow named Kamdhenu and Parasuram turns into an avenger and the Punisher all rolled into one by killing all the male Kshatriyas on earth, all of them corrupt and evil, 21 successive times! Basically, the wives survived and he kept killing successive generations of the clans and filled five lakes with their blood. I don’t know which five lakes, though!Hey! I didn’t come up with this stuff! It’s mythology! Deal with it!So after destroying the Kshatriyas down to essentially nothingness, he was suddenly overcome with guilt and remorse! He couldn’t handle this burden anymore. His heart was a mess! Awww! So, he approached an assembly of priestly men, who he had brought down from the north to find a way of penitence for his sins. Who else would you consult when you want your sins and crimes to get washed away, but priests! He needed absolution. Sigh! Who doesn’t!So, the priests advised that to save his soul from eternal damnation, he must hand all the lands he had conquered over to the Brahmins and meditate. He did as he was told and meditated at Gokarna in coastal Karnataka (if you haven’t been there, you absolutely must!).After several weeks (years?) of meditation, Parasuram managed to please Varuna (the Lord of the Oceans) and Bhumidevi - the Goddess of Earth. Parasuram asked Varuna for a boon. To absolve himself from the shit he had committed, he wanted to gift some land to the Brahmins, but there was none left.Varuna smiled and said, worry not, child! or something like that, and told Parasuram, who was probably fuming at being called ‘child’ (Child? Who, me? Imma stick my axe so far up your behind that…), to fling his axe from where he stood at Gokarna. The land from Gokarna till the point where the axe landed would be given to him, just as he wished. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! The throw of the axe from Gokarna to Kanyakumari, is what Kerala is (not exactly, but you get the drift, right!).Parasuram donated this land to the brahmins.According to the ancient texts, the Puranas, it was Parasuram who relocated 64 brahmin families in Kerala, whom he brought down from the north to absolve him from his slaughter of the Kshatriyas. During this land allocation, he also built 108 Shiva and 108 Shakti (goddess) temples.A god doing godly stuff! Just another day in the office Parasuram!According to these Puranas, Kerala is also known as Parasurama Kshetram, ie., 'The Land of Parasuram', and since Parasuram was a god, well, this roughly translates to God’s land, or as it’s been metamorphosed over the years, God’s Own Country! Besides, the 216 temples he built also played a significant role in the state getting this name. (Credit: Vikas Menon)Well, the fact that Kerala is what it is, an absolutely gorgeous state filled with an abundance of stunning natural beauty, it helps sell this tagline!Additional References:Parashurama | Hindu mythologyParasuramaMyths and legends about the creation of Kerala, the legend of Parasurama and MaveliPS: I’m no historian, but if anyone wants to add to this, please feel free!

King Pandu had two wives, Kunti and Madri, then why did Madri choose sati instead of Kunti, when Pandu died? Why didn't both or none of them choose to be sati?

First of all sati pratha was not a compulsory tradition and it was a personal choice. Secondly the reason behind Madri's death was different. When sage Kindama had cursed Pandu, he had said that Pandu would die as soon as he gets intimate with a woman. He added that the woman with whom he would get intimate, would follow him to the land of the dead. When Pandu was alone in forest with Madri, he almost forgot about the curse and lost control. He tried to get intimate with Madri. Madri tried to remind him and stop him but no one could have changed his fate. As soon as Pandu died, Madri started screaming. When Kunti approached them, then Madri was holding his dead body on the ground. She told Kunti that she would follow Pandu. But Kunti tried to stop her. Madri was filled with guilt. Also she realised that she may not be the unbiased mother to all the Pandavas as Kunti would be. She told Kunti, “ Our lord had desired me and as a wife I can't leave him alone, when his desire was not fulfilled. I must follow him.”By choice Madri became sati, and Kunti took care of their children. Nothing was imposed on her.

Is it safe to say that people with high-functioning autism have few to no problems?

Something like 90% of the time ‘high-functioning’ means ‘is able to talk well enough that they don’t seen too weird in a short conversation.’No one who has called me ‘high-functioning’ has actually spent any time with me to see how I function. They just assume I can talk normally (for the brief time they interact with me) and they don’t see me stimming in an obvious way, so I might be able to function ‘normally.’No.Okay, first off, my ability to talk is highly variable. So is my ability to hear.I need a schedule. If I get through off my schedule, I will stop being able to function. I am, within reason, be able to adjust my schedule to circumstance. I do this not by being okay with unexpected changes, but by having a plan and ‘back up schedule’ for what to do when stuff happens. If my back up plans are insufficient, function is done for the day.I need to shower with the light off bc the fan hurts my ears.Sometimes I can’t shower at all because the water hurts me.Teeth brushing, ditto, but worse.I cannot recognize some of my feelings. Particularly anger and arousal. The sensations of my own body (breathing, heart beat, peeing for godsakes) can be enough to send me into sensory overload.I hit shutdown at least once a week. Shutdown is the less dramatic version of meltdown where I sit and stare at something (usually my computer screen) and rock until my brain calms down enough to begin functioning again.I have paperwork sitting on my dining room table that has been waiting a month to get filled out because the visual overwhelm of the damn stuff is enough to put me on the edge of shut down.Do have any idea what it is like to desperately want human touch and intimacy and be in such sensory overload that if anyone touches you you will go through the roof?Places I can’t go without hitting shutdown: clubs, conventions, amusement parks, museums, county fairs, and malls (inside of holiday shopping season).Places I can’t go without risking shutdown: malls (outside of holiday shopping season), busy/noisy restaurants, many family events (fled my cousins wedding reception once, his mother never forgave me), smaller community events, schools.Things I sometimes need help with: going to the bathroom, getting water, getting food, taking a shower, filling out paperwork, keeping up with the budget, talking on the phone, texting. In the last year, I have need to write notes to people because I couldn’t talk multiple times. This has including talking with: teller at my bank, land lord, nesting partner, neighbor, therapist, and my kids.Oh, and don’t get me started on the issues with employment. Now, I need a lot less support that many autistic people. I am usually verbal, I can sometimes mask, I have enough executive function to design and follow my own schedule, I am not physically impaired beyond minor issues, my affect is usually dimished not flat, I could go on for a while. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have problems. In some ways, it means I have different problems. It means I am expected to live up to standards that are impossible for me and blamed when I don’t meet them, because I ‘look’ normal and so must be faking/lying/lazy/rude/inconsiderate/selfish/etc when I ask for help, say I can’t do something, or make a mistake socially.
