I didn't see the smirk leave, but I heard it. I don't remember his exact words because of how stressed I was in that moment, but my stepson called and as we were conversing, he made a snarky remark about how I sounded (I get a lot of minor illnesses due to fibromyalgia and allergies). The only time a therapist is obligated to tell parents is if you are under the age of a minor as defined by your state or if you are no longer a minor and one of the following is true: (please note ages vary based on each state’s definition of a minor and each state’s laws regarding confidentiality differ so this is specific to Texas):You are threatening to harm yourself;You are threatening to harm someone else;You’ve put the welfare of a child in danger;You've put the welfare of an elderly or disabled person in danger;You are a danger to the public.Otherwise, s/he would be in violation of the sworn oath she took and could have her license revoked.I told my therapist some outrageous things, but as long as I wasn’t violating one of the above criteria, she was obligated to maintain confidentiality. In certain circumstances, a patient might give their therapist a medical release that would release the therapist of maintaining confidentiality.For example, I gave my therapist a medical release stating that if I were to disappear, I give her permission to discuss my therapy sessions with authorities and my parents. This was close to the time I escaped a domestic violence situation, and he attempted to kidnap me. If I disappeared, I wanted authorities to know it wasn’t of my own doing.I don’t wear this as a badge, but as an example of why it benefits you to be honest with a therapist in any situation including illicit drug use. It gave me great comfort and a sense of safety having a therapist as an ally with the added bonus of the oathe she took and the law protecting my right to privacy. My circumstance was not unique by any means and thousands of people have those same conversations.
