I don’t think a lot of them are necessarily making sure their species survives, just that they as an individual do.Super mutants are humans who became infected with Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV), leading to their current mutations. FEV does exactly what it says on the tin, altering infected people’s DNA so the newly-infected person has the best possible combination of traits.However, biology dictates that gametes (reproductive cells) are only half-cells and have 23 chromosomes instead of 46. The reason for this is obviously because when sperm meets egg the 23 chromosomes in each make a full cell. However, FEV perceives gametes to be damaged. FEV’s genetic sequences “repaired” gametes by adding remaining chromosomes, leaving them unable to form a zygote since they’re already joined with filler chromosomes.Super mutants from Mariposa Military Base in California (the first generation of mutants) don’t lose their sexual organs, but lack secondary features like breasts; super mutants on the East Coast from Vault 87 or the Institute are equally androgynous.Pictured: a virgin.In Fallout 3, it’s stated that super mutants want to obtain more samples of FEV to infect people and eventually take over the Capital Wasteland. No one knows what the next step of the plan is; probably finding even more people, getting more FEV samples, rinse and repeat. They’re also a fringe group and it’s never stated that that’s the mindset of every super mutant you encounter (and it probably isn’t). It’s also incredibly likely for FEV samples to simply run out, and there’s no guarantee that people undergoing mutations will even survive.Super mutants have shown capabilities to start settlements, as seen in Jacobstown and the State of Utobitha, both in New Vegas. Neither of them are perfect, but it circles back to the original point; every super mutant wants to survive. It’s never mentioned how Jacobstown gets supplies; they have a bighorn pen that presumably supplies the town with meat, but it’s up in the air as to how they get vegetables, weapons, and miscellaneous items.While Jacobstown is shown as the move level-headed and tame of the two super mutant towns, I would’t be surprised if they survive by doing the same thing Tabitha does—sacking caravans. Life in the Wastelands is awful, after all, and ultimately comes down to survival of the fittest. [EDIT: I’ve been told that Jacobstown trades bighorn pelts for supplies and that if you talk to Marcus, they try to avoid trouble so the NCR won’t get in their hair. I’m leaving my original point up but thank you Jacob Takuira-Mita for pointing this out!]Super mutants are inherently “bred” to be stronger, more resilient, and able to brush off injuries. However, there really is no ultimate plan for them. It’s possible to tell the Master in the original Fallout that his plan to turn everyone into super mutants and sterilize those who resist will fail, as super mutants are also sterile and will result in humanity being wiped out within a generation; this will actually cause the Master to kill himself.With the Master gone, super mutants are basically left to wander around the ruins of the US. There’s no ultimate goal, no plan that will succeed in furthering their existence. They now exist solely to survive. The most pressing objective of the very first expedition is to set up.At the moment, the most promising mission there is its SpaceX’s Mars colonisation plan, and the first manned mission to Mars would compose of roughly 12 members. The first thing that they’re going to put their hands together to do is to set down the first building blocks of ‘Mars Base Alpha’ as well as the fuel production plan.Although the BFR will provide them with the necessary lodging and radiation protection to last them a long time, the mission is still to create a permanent settlement on the surface. And a bunch of spaceships linked together can hardly be called a settlement.Therefore, I expect a major portion of the astronauts on the first trip would be primarily composed of engineers of various fields: Electrical, chemical, structural, construction, computer,… Many of these jobs can be handled by a singular astronaut at once. Even if the habitats were to be built in precast pieces and only need to be put together like a very important Lego set, you still need skills to put them together.And you still need to work out the propellant plant that’s going to be producing Methane for the spaceship, not only for future missions, but also for the return trips.I don’t think there’s going to be that many scientific missions being thrown around first hand: They’re there first to survive, science can come much later - science won’t go anywhere when you’re stuck on an inhospitable, hostile planet with civilisation a few millions miles away heavenward (Literally).But we still have to count for the critical members within the crew such as a doctor - who can also doubled up doing interim science in the process. The crew can also do preliminary, basic science such as collecting rock samples, re-analysing the atmosphere, and doing a few test drills into the soil to find traces of water,… et cetera - but not until much later when the habitat can be considered basically finished that there’d be hardcore science happening.General Consensus: SCIENCE - Delayed.
