Number of auto accidents compared to airline accidents is about 5 million to 20. Basically, the odds of your plane having any issue that could cause injury to an infant in a lap is astonomically low, and a trip to the grocery store, even with the best car seat and safety restraint is comparatively EXTREMELY dangerous to your child.People don’t like to think about this, but this is the truth. We accept the risk of a fatal car accident pretty much every day, because it’s convenient for us to do so: Then we get over-anxious about things like air travel. Perhaps it’s because air travel doesn’t FEEL safe.The truth is the truth though. Babies in laps traveling on planes are far safer than babies in car seats traveling in cars. So much so, that it’s a bit silly to worry about one when you frequently engage in the other.

Oh yes.A man presented to the ED but would not sit down or take his raincoat off. He had an iron ring (looked like a plumbing piece) shoved all the way up the shaft of his penis and the tissue below had become so swollen that the tiny ring could not be budged. Did that on a dare.Or the man who presented with an empty wine bottle in his rectum with about 1/4 of the bottle extending out of his anus. Seems the bottle opening was against the tissue and created a sort of vacuum which prevented us from simply pulling the bottle out. Glass cutter needed. Never got an explanation of how it got there except for his insistence that he didn’t see it when he sat down on a chair.Or the man who presented with a vibrator in his rectum. He did not necessarily want it removed and wanted to know if we could just replace the dead battery.Lastly the man who was in a serious auto accident and was brought to the ED in a comatose state. Our social worker found his wallet and contacted his wife. We did not know that the local police found his wallet in his briefcase and contacted his wife or that EMS had found his wallet in the glove box and called his wife. You guessed it: 3 different addresses, phone numbers, and wives. He told his wives that his job required a lot of travel and rotated between 3 different families. All of the wives rushed to the hospital only to discover this deception and each other. When he woke up I think he prayed to go into a coma again.

I taught at one school where it was extremely hazardous to be the grandmother of an athlete. Athletes’ grandmothers died on a regular and continuing basis, and their funerals were always in far away places that took a week of travel time, round-trip. I always granted the student time to go to the funeral, providing they brought back to me a copy of the funeral program. This is a small pamphlet the funeral home produces that has the decedent’s name, maybe a photo, their date of birth, etc. I’ve never been to a funeral where there weren’t available. Oddly, my students never attended a funeral where they were available. No funeral program, no excused absence.It occurred to me more than once that these funeral programs would be very easy to come by, and I would have no way of knowing whether the person described therein was a relative or not. Even so, this was apparently too much of an effort to make.I got around the “I had an emergency” problem by dropping the lowest test grade. If you missed a test, that was the one you dropped. Otherwise, I would have to both write and administer a make-up test, and that was a pain in the ass.I had one student who made something of a show of walking past my classroom the day I was giving a test, grinning and telling me, “There was too much reading for this test, so I’m skipping it.” Okay, your choice. Karma came to get her quickly when she was involved in an auto accident the day before the final, and suffered a minor injury. When she came to me to make up her final exam, I reminded her of the policy. She must have tried to get me to give her that make-up exam four times.The college experience teaches students more than what is in the lectures and textbooks. It also teaches the concepts of punctuality, deadlines, and responsibility. Some people learn these concepts more quickly than others.
