PDF Editor FAQ

Should I join the Local 600 (International Cinematographers Guild)?

Yes; however good luck. While you can join whenever you want in LA (off roster) what you really need is to get on the IER run by Contract Services (CSATF Home) , overseen by the producers. To do this you need to work enough qualifying days. I haven’t checked in awhile but I believe it’s 100 days in your job (e.g. 100 work days as a DoP) over a 3 year period. Now generally this needs to be paid via a payroll company (like Entertainment Partners, Media Services, etc) but you can be paid via check from the company, but you’ll need the Memo to say your job, and you’ll need your call sheets, and a letter from the producer on company letterhead, and even then they may disqualify those days (e.g. student films, even if paid, I don’t believe count). Now once you’ve done that you can join the Union, take the safety classes, pay your dues and join fee (which I believe for a DoP is around $13000), and then…. not work. The union doesn’t really get you jobs. It allows you to work Union jobs, which is Amazing and I 100% support (and the health, pension, and pay is WELL worth it IN THE END). However, unless you’re up to start getting calls for union work, it’s not really worth while. Also I would recommend joining as a DoP as that would allow you to either Shoot or work as a Cam Op for other DPs on Multi-Cam shows. I also think it qualifies you to work as an AC if you’re any good and came up that way. Point is you can work jobs lower than the job at which you joined but can’t as easily work jobs above what you joined. You should also start up some conversations with the local and they can fill you in on all the paperwork things:Local 600 - HomeAnd here’s how to get on the Roster in the Western Region (LA)https://www.icg600.com/Portals/0/PDFs%20(Public)/2017-Roster-Info-Letter.pdf

Would the citizens of United States be better off with no separate states?

No.Consider, for example, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The NLRB is a federal tribunal and de facto agency (it has field reps, for example) that does all kinds of interesting things. It has 26 regional offices: Regional Offices That’s more than one per every two states! Of course, they aren’t evenly distributed because of population density, so Minneapolis and Milwaukee serve 5.5 states between them, but you get the idea.So let’s say we take a vaguely similar state agency, like Oregon’s State Employment Department: Employment Department (Obviously not too similar, because NLRB powers are federal under the Constitution!) It has 1 location, in Salem, OR. Were the the Union to be dissolved, and the Oregon State Employment Department to be federalized, one of two things would happen:The federal government realizes that the Oregon State Employment Department is a wonderful thing the whole country should have, resulting in a massive 26-office NLRB-style overlayThis would require a lengthy investigation into where the offices should serve and how many of them there should beIf it’s 26, you’ll have to up each office’s travel budgetIf it’s 50, well, that’s the same number as if each state had oneThe federal government realizes that the Oregon State Employment Department is most appropriate to the local culture of what once was Oregon, and leaves it be as is… to……well, serve Oregon’s employment-related needs, exactly as it does now, but with a whole bunch of paperwork to change its tax forms and letterheadEliminating states, even if it had no political ramifications, would represent a massive reorganization of federal and state government resources that would place the US in roughly the situation in which it started. Some sort of reorganization is hypothetically possible (why are there two Dakotas? etc.), but going from 50 states to 1 is too drastic too soon.

How do I get a "Dr." title in my German passport with a British PhD diploma? Do I need to seek a diploma recognition in Germany first and then apply for a new passport?

Having done that at one point [1], let me tell you how that works in brief. It’s an exercise in standard German bureaucracy.Step 0: Check that you got a proper PhD that’s from a recognized institution. Since Britain is still in the EU for the time being, this is not a particularly big problem. In general, any research-oriented PhD from a university (i.e., not some polytechnic-equivalent) from a country in the EU is fine. Essentially, it needs to be in this database: Informationssystem zur Anerkennung ausländischer BildungsabschlüsseIn that case, you are allowed to use the Dr. in everyday life on all forms, business cards etc. without running afoul of § 132a StGB without separate recognition process. This is not true for non-EU countries and just shows how much red tape is actually reduced by the EU and common market regulations! [2]Step 1: Walk into your local town hall on a Friday morning with your English degree certificate and all of the required things for your standard passport application (old ID cards, photos etc). Go to one of the clerks, tell them what you want (i.e., the Dr. in your passport). They’ll say “Sure, no problem.” and start the process. They’ll eventually ask for your diploma. They’ll look at it, get confused, face goes white. They’ll say “But this isn’t from a German university. You need to have this recognized. Do you have a German form stating that?”Step 2: You say that you checked the law [3], and you don’t need to have it recognized, you’re perfectly entitled to use your title whenever, because it’s from a university proper in the EU. They will say “That can’t be right, this is not how I know it.” Then they proceed to google the problem. Yes, not look into the law or any relevant decrees. Google. They look at the first couple of results and start to read out:“ ‘A PhD from a foreign country needs to be recognized…’ See, I’m, right!”“Read the end of that sentence.”“ ‘…unless it’s from a university in the European Union.’ ”“That’s what I said, right? Britain is clearly still in the EU.”They’ll then proceed to get their supervisor because they are massively out of their depth. The only case they handled was a degree from Turkey — which is clearly not in the EU. Mind you, even in a decently-sized town of 200,000 people few people ever come with this particular request.Step 3: Supervisor turns up, looks at your degree. Says “Okay, the thing is: I speak English, I even know the University of Oxford. I know that you’re right about the law. However, this is Germany and a German authority. We speak German, it’s the Amtssprache. So, you need a certified translation.”Aha, now it seems we are getting to the crux of the matter. They could probably help you but they don’t want to. The fact that from the roughly 20 words on the Diploma certificate, maybe 3 would be translated (the remainder are the title of the dissertation and the name of the university, which would stay as is) does not play a role. The language excuse is a convenient one, because it kind of makes sense, right? It’s just that getting a notarized translation will cost a lot of time and money for no good reason.Step 4: Having recognized that you’re not going to get your Ausweis today, you resign for the moment. The battle is lost but not the war. You leave the building and call the nearby Kultusministerium, the ministry of education that is responsible for recognizing degrees. You get a nice and finally competent woman on the line, asking about recognition of your UK degree. She says “You don’t need to have it recognized, since it’s a EU university. In fact, there is not even a process for it.” You answer “Well, I know that. Could you tell that to the people from the city council responsible for the matter at hand?” The both of you decide that it’s best that you just come over to the ministry and meet in person. Mind you, it’s Friday afternoon now, not the time many civil service employees are known to be busy and productive.Step 5: She, however, is super nice and helpful when you come in. She says she’ll start some kind of internal process at the end of which you’ll get an informal letter with the ministry’s letterhead, stating that you are indeed entitled to use your degree as you wish, and that no recognition is needed. She just needs a copy and even gives you a notification of acceptance. [4]Step 6: With that notification you go back to the city council. You speak directly with the top dog, the Amtsleiter, explaining the situation. He immediately understands, tells the clerk to fulfil your request — under the condition that you bring in the full letter from the ministry as soon as you receive it.Step 7: Finally, it’s done! The letter is in the mailbox a week later, you bring it in, and your shiny brand new passport/ID card turns up another two weeks, with your title included!———[1] Not for my passport, but for my Personalausweis, the national identity card. I needed to get a new one and thought, why not. Realistically, there are still some advantages here and there with the title when I’m back in Germany. But I would certainly never fork over the substantial time and money investment for a new passport before the old one runs out just to add the title.[2] You can usually use your title as it was decreed by your university, if you also include the full name of the institution. So, “Max Mustermann, PhD, University of Nowhere” is fine on your business card, even if it’s a degree mill. But you must not go with Dr. Mustermann or neglect the name of the institution, ever or risk a fine (plus the social ostracization as a fraud if someone decides to look into your educational background). In case of a completely fucked up Brexit, this may eventually even apply to British degrees, but as with all of this wretched process, we have no fucking clue yet. See Ausländische Hochschulgrade: Titel richtig führen for more information.[3] Unfortunately, education is a matter of the German federal state you’re in, so the precise law can vary.[4] She also chats about her more typical daily experiences. Says that they get a lot of dodgy request from degree mills, in particular from the Americas and Eastern Europe. Money quote: “Essentially, anything from Florida that lands on my desk is not going to get recognized here.”
