First, we have to make clear what the Byzantines had and what they did not have with respect to heraldry. Emblems and symbols of various forms, design, complexity and signification were frequently used in the empire, which was well known for its rich visual language in all aspects of public life — secular and religious alike.We can distinguish Byzantine emblems in two broad categories: emblems of individuals and emblems of offices / institutions.The emblems of individuals are known to us mostly from seals. Their main versions were two: (a) monograms, i.e. artistic combinations of letters that made up the owner’s name, title(s) and/or an invocation; (b) depictions of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, angels and saints. From the early Byzantine period, for example, we have the Notitia dignitatum, which describes the administrative structure of the state, including the insignia of various offices like shields or state coaches painted in certain colors and bearing specific representations (geometrical shapes, animals, images of the emperor).So what is missing compared to the West?Family heraldry.For most of Byzantine history, neither the imperial nor the aristocratic families seem to have had special emblems of their bloodline. Every significant family member would simply have their own in accordance with the scheme described above. At most, that may have changed a bit from the 11th c. onward, when the empire became more “feudal.” Some scholars describe the double-headed eagle as the Komnenoi coat of arms and the tetragrammic cross with the four Bs (?) as the Palaiologoi coat of arms.Culture and tradition aside, the main reason was the Byzantine socio-political order. As I’ve said here and here, the empire didn’t have so rigid a social hierarchy. Officially, there were no hereditary titles — only offices and honorary titles bestowed on individuals by the emperor (from point on, mainly on scions of rich, influential families). Roughly the same went even for the imperial office.
