*OBSERVATION:Don’t mistake the U.S. Army’s Ranger School with the 75th Ranger Regiment’s Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP).The former is an intensive, 61-day combat leadership course for Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) from all across the military branches (and even receiving some foreign candidates), while the latter is the 8-week (or 3-week, for Officers) selection and basic training process of the Ranger Regiment — whose members are dedicated Special Operations “shock troops”, so to speak [this is an oversimplification, but yeah…].So, there is only one Ranger unit in the U.S. Army, the 75th Ranger Regiment (75th Rgr Rgt). The Regiment is made up by:A Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC, 75th Rgr Rgt);A Regimental Special Troops Battalion (75th Rgr STB, or RSTB), comprising:A Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC, RSTB);A Selection and Training Company;A Communications Company;And the Regimental Reconnaissance Company (RRC).A Regimental Military Intelligence Battalion (75th Rgr MIB, or RMIB), comprising:A Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC, RMIB);A Military Intelligence Company (MIC, RMIB);And a Cyber-Electromagnetic Activities Company (CEMA Co, RMIB).And three operational Battalions (1st, 2nd & 3rd Rgr Btn), each organized into:A Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC, 1st/2nd/3rd Rgr Btn);Four Rifle Companies (“Alpha”, “Bravo”, “Charlie” and “Delta”), each one comprising:A Headquarters Platoon;Three 24-strong Rifle Platoons;And one Weapons Platoon.Plus a Support Company (“Echo”).As of 2016 [outdated; I know], the 75th Ranger Regiment had 3,623 authorized personnel (3,566 military and 57 civilian).“Into The Breach”, by Stuart Brown (2012). That would have to be the one nude picture of me that my first husband, Doug, took with him to the war in Vietnam.When he was killed in action, the picture survived. It was among his personal effects, which were sent home to me in a large manila envelope.The picture had an interesting back story. It began as an innocent tease.He was to leave for Vietnam in a little more than a week, so we went to a lake cottage to be alone together for a while. At least for a few days, we could pretend he wasn’t going anywhere.We had just awakened on the second morning. He got up to go to the bathroom and I stayed in bed a little longer, all toasty-warm under the covers.Suddenly, he appeared in the doorway, holding a camera to his eye.“Smile!”Horrified, I ducked under the covers. “No way! You can’t take that picture. I’m not wearing anything!”He backed away from the doorway. “I know. I’m only teasing you, Babe.”Hearing that, and thinking he had given up the idea, I relaxed. Then feeling a little frisky, I sat up, tossed the covers aside, threw my arms in the air, and shouted, “TA-DA!”((( *snap* )))The picture was taken.I remember being surprised that they developed it at the photo store. Doug wasn’t. It was an Army base, after all.I’ve never been able to discard the picture, probably because I knew how much it meant to Doug, having it with him in Nam. The Ranger Regiment is uniquely authorized to send young privates, but no matter, everyone removes their rank to go to the school.I was a Private First Class (PFC) when I was sent. Most of the other students I started with were young NCOs and Lieutenants, but there were a few Captains, senior NCOs, a Sergeant Major, 6 Navy SEAL ensigns, and a smattering of Recon Marines and special operations Airmen. Two thirds of us were gone before graduation- including me; I recycled desert phase and finished with the next class.This was in 1991 and the average wait for a private from Regiment was about a year. If you were in headquarters company (HHC), the wait could be much shorter due to fewer Privates in line.I knew a commo guy in HHC who was sent to Ranger school as a private E2. He was promoted to PFC after starting school and to Specialist E4 right after graduating with his tab. He never wore the PFC rank.
