That is something that is not mine to address or try to control. Out of loyalty to my Mother I would manipulate a situation to where she would find out and not let it be known that I know. It’s not my fight but he is my father and I don’t appreciate him doing that to my Mom and it does something to me. I am so proud of myself and glad I left him. It hurt but I got over it. Never remarried and independent. I have struggled financially but did my best. My son and I are close and that’s what is most important to me.

Alright I’ll bite.Saladin was a great leader of the Muslim world and one of the most recognisable names in the Middle Ages. He has been popularised throughout history as a pious, chivalrous man who stopped the infamous Crusaders. His name literally translates into “Righteousness of the Faith” and his noble deeds have been shown to the modern audience with the movie Kingdom of Heaven,Unfortunately the movie is filled with historical inaccuracies and Saladin wasn’t really like this. In fact he had done several quite disturbing things.In the movies portrayal of the siege of Jerusalem, Saladin was portrayed as merciful to the Crusaders, allowing them free passage to Cyprus if the defenders surrendered. However in reality Saladin wanted to take back the city that was taken from his people by force and initially refused to reach terms with the Christian Franks. It was only after a lengthy and bloody siege, where Balain (leader of the defending city) had to threaten to burn down all the Muslim places of worship and massacre all Muslims in the city, that Balain was allowed to surrender. Saladin did permit some Christians to leave the city, but not out of the kindness of his heart. He demanded ransom to allow all Franks to leave. 13,000 Christians who couldn’t afford the ransom were then enslaved and the women were raped by Saladin’s men. (Imad ad-Din, 1201 as cited by Gabrielli, 1957, p.163)“Women and children together came to 8,000 and were quickly divided up among us, bringing a smile to Muslim faces at their lamentations. How many well-guarded women were profaned, how many queens were ruled, and nubile girls married and noble women given away, and miserly women forced to yield themselves, and women who had been kept hidden stripped of their modesty and serious women made ridiculous, and women kept in private now set in public, and free women occupied, and precious ones used for hard work, and pretty things put to the test, and virgins dishonoured and proud women deflowered, and lovely women’s red lips kissed, and dark women prostrated, and untamed ones tamed and happy ones made to weep. How many noblemen took them as concubines, how many ardent men blazed for one of them, and celibates were satisfied by them, and thirsty men sated by them and turbulent men able to give vent to their passion….”Other more disturbing and less known acts of his include the execution of 200 knights after the battle of Hattin, where he decided not to ransom the knights. According to some sources he even reveled in the humiliation of the knights before they were executed. (Gabrielli, 1957, p.138)To top it off Saladin was racist by today’s standards. Early in Saladin’s rise to power in Egypt, he supposedly executed a black eunuch in his court to have him replaced with a white eunuch which caused 50,000 black Egyptians to rise in rebellion against Saladin. This presented a huge threat to Saladin’s at best precarious position of power. Given that open battle wasn’t Saladin’s strong suit (Another unpopular opinion) he ordered his men to loot and pillage the rebelling soldier’s homes and family causing the rebellion to disperse with many returning home and allowed for Saladin to defeat the fractured army. (Lyons and Jacksons, 1982,, pp. 34–36) He then disbanded all black army units which would take centuries to be rectified. Saladin is by no means a virtuous man by today’s standards and many of his deeds have been distorted by modern historians in order to frame a mythologised understanding of Saladin’s legacy. This is kind of similar to what was done with Rommel with historians trying to build a character who was a worthy opponent of Richard the Lionheart.I’ll end on this question. Should we apply modern values and expectations on these historical characters who come from a more primitive and brutal time? If we look at Saladin as a man from his own time we begin to realise that he isn’t an evil leader, but he was a normal, if not graceful leader. He did let a majority of the Christians in Jerusalem leave and he did offer a generous ransom (even though the Crusaders couldn’t afford anything else). The capture of Jerusalem in the first Crusade was exceptionally bloody and Saladin avoided this and was even merciful by medieval standards. His execution of 200 knights could be seen as a tactical decision to prevent the knights from joining the later crusades. Even his victory in the “battle of the blacks” through backhanded tactics was somewhat justified in their context as it was standard for rebellions to be brutally crushed in those days.
