PDF Editor FAQ

I am failing a class by 1%, but the teacher won't accept my late homework which will bring my grade up 9%. The teacher never said that late homework is not allowed and the assignment is graded for completion only. Do you think this is fair?

When I was a young instructor, I tried to be “fair” and accepted late homework from one student who told me a long, sad story. When I read it, somehow it seemed familiar. Then it hit me. The person handing in the late assignment copied a paper I had corrected and handed back to one of the smart, and hardworking “A” students. Now I had two problems. Not only did the lazy, late student copy the work of another and hand it in late, but the “A” student was now also involved in the cheating.I did not send the case to Judicial Affairs as I could have and had both students before the Judicial Board for academic fraud. I did however, award an “zero” grade for the paper to both students. Happily, the “A” student had a high enough average that the “F” grade did not drop that person’s course grade for a foolish mistake. I wont say I never again accepted a late paper, but I never again accepted one without being certain that it was original work.Added 1/12/19I did not interpret this question as being related to a personal obsession with getting “better” grades to get into a “better” school as Gallia suggested in her comment. Rather, I saw it as an irresponsible person who has trouble with deadlines, or as someone purposely gaming the system . I can just hear future complaints from this person such as, “the mean old mortgage company foreclosed on my house just because I was a few weeks late with my payment,” or “the IRS fined me just because I sent my taxes in a few days late.” How about, “the mean police had my car towed away just because I was a month or so late in getting it insured and registered.” “Why is the world so unfair to me?”Then, there were the kids who totally blew off the homework which was worth about 25 per cent of the course grade assuming they would get straight A’s on the exams and end up with a respectable C+ or B- in the course without breaking a sweat. Well, guess what? The gamesters usually ended up with a “D” in the exams, and then insisted it was “unfair” to not let them submit the homework at the end of the semester to raise their grades. So what is a professor to do? Let them submit work that is sure to be plagiarized from a classmate; give them an additional “extra-credit”assignment that is also likely to be plagiarized from Wikipedia, and that I would have to grade within my usual 72 hour deadline for grade submission. If I did that for one student, to be “fair,” I’d have to contact all the other students in the class and make the same offer to them—including the A- kids who are “obsessed with “better” grades. There is no ethical way to justify allowing one student to do extra credit work or late submissions (without being sick or other good reason) and not offering the same privilege to all others in the class. Now that is really unfair —grading students using different standards that are also different from those stated on the syllabus.Added 2/10/19Fortunately, the classes I usually taught at Penn State Harrisburg rarely got above 35 in size, so I was able to kept track of paper due dates, submissions, and test scores. If it looked as though someone were getting behind, they would get a friendly email from me that I had not received a homework paper, or their last test was not up to their usual standards, and we needed to meet to see how I could be of help. It was difficult to say they didn’t know a paper was due if I had sent several emails reminding them that a paper was due. My grading formula was on the syllabus, and grades were based on number of points scored. There were rarely any end of semester surprises.

My mom and I bought a house in Fl. My mom died before I got a home in my name. My sister moved my nephew, 2 cats and his gf into my house, I was away working. He trashed it, I moved. He hasn’t paid a thing. Can I kick him out and get my house back?

This is a legal issue and you need an attorney to sort it all out for you. There are also unanswered questions in your original post. Was the house in both your Mom’s name and yours? If so, this might suggest that when she died, the house became totally yours. If not, and she died intestate (without leaving a will), it depends on the laws of Florida how her property gets distributed, and your sister may be entitled to a share. Don’t put it off, you could also lose the property for unpaid taxes, or mortgage payments, or lack of insurance. It will probably cost you a few hundred dollars to consult an attorney, but if you mess up on this, it could end up costing you a lot more than that. You will also need a lawyer to handle any eviction, and damage claims.
