PDF Editor FAQ
When does Chase send out 1099-B statement for their brokerage accounts?
Turns out the answer is 2/15 this year, a Saturday.
As a judge or courtroom worker, did you ever see or hear something that made you say, “you can’t be serious…”?
When I first moved to Houston they picked jurors from the voting rolls. You could only be called up every 13 months. I was in the voter rolls and was called up every 13 months. I was selected as one of 64 jurors for a trial. I was juror #14. I just knew I would be selected. They sent us out into the hall and reversed the juror order making me juror #50. I was comfortable that I would not be selected for this trial due to reversing the juror order. This displeased many that were now at the front in jury selection and several exchanges with the jurors, attorneys and the judge occurred. The trial was for a man that had several prior convictions for various crimes most of them drug related. He had been high on drugs, robbed his neighbor, pistol whipped him with a stolen gun, and stole his car. The police chased him down and caught him when he wrecked his neighbors car. He was pleading guilty and wanted a jury to provide his punishment rather than a judge. At one point a woman said she just couldn’t sentence a person to prison because he might not be guilty of the crime. (First incredible event). The jurors began shouting at each other and the woman that he was pleading guilty to the crimes. With others shouting back that he was high on drugs and not responsible for his actions, the house was unlocked, the keys were given to him by the neighbor, etc, etc. the judge asked to see a show of hands of those in the jury pool of those that couldn’t live with the guilt of sentencing a man to prison. A show of hands shot up. Most of them among the lower numbered jurors. The judge immediately dismissed them. Then the attorney stated if that question was asked then the question should be asked if there were people present that could sentence this man to prison. I held up my hand and was immediately dismissed (second incredible event). This left only 35 jurors. The judge then asked if any were familiar with the case. It had been on the television news and in the two local papers. That left an insufficient number of jurors to continue the case and the remainder were dismissed before I could leave my seat and get to the exit door. It was now afternoon and nothing had been accomplished. I was paid $6/day for my service, it cost $5.50/day to park and I had put an extra 60 miles on my car and had parked in a parking garage under a pigeon roost. I had to clean the windshield before I could drive off. Six weeks later I got my check for $6 jury duty along with a form 1099 to report the income.
As a contractor, am I required to fill W-9 form if the payment is under $600?
Filling out a W-9 is a pretty standard procedure. Here’s the rub. When a company asks you to fill out a W-9, it is almost a virtual certainty, they will need this form back before they’ll pay you a penny. The company has no way of knowing what the end of the year tally will be, in terms of your earnings, so the assumption is that all independent contractors will receive a 1099.In order to issue a 1099 in accordance with the terms set for by the Internal Revenue Service, information from the W-9 form is required. Without it, the company cannot comply with the law and faces unpleasant/unwanted penalties and fines. So, if they are being a hard-ass about it, that is why.If you don’t go over the $600 threshold for the year, you won’t be issued a 1099.No harm, no foul. They have your W-9 information in the system, so maybe if you come back and do more work for them next year (and do happen to go over the threshold) there will be no issues trying to ‘chase you down’ to get the W-9 information. If you want to get paid, play the game and fill out the dumb form. It takes two minutes to make this issue go away — that’s less time than I spent writing the answer to your question.
