He is in the list of nominees for Indian of the Year 2014.He is an IPS of the 1999 batch, currently serves as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), Kerala. He is also a Deputy Inspector General of Police (Battalions) overseeing all Police Battalions in Kerala, as well as official-in-charge of the Kerala Railway Police.P Vijayan was born in a poor family in north Kerala. After having failed to clear SSLC in his first attempt, he started working as a child labourer. He was determined to get a college degree. He cleared SSLC after five years and then worked in a soap company and taught schoolchildren. Vijayan did an MA and MPhil in Economics from Calicut University, and finally passed the prestigious Civil Services examination in 1999 to join the IPS.What he has done after clearing the Civil services is spectacular. This program is used as a platform to inspire youngsters and guide them in a positive and productive manner so that they become responsible citizens. Initiated in August 2010 in 127 schools across Kerala, with 11176 students - both boys and girls - enrolled as Cadets the project has now been expanded to a statewide network of 433 schools with a combined strength of nearly 35,000 SPCs, being trained by over 850 existing teachers and nearly 1500 officers of Kerala Police. This program is currently being expanded throughout India.Vijayan also initiated the Our Responsibility to Children (ORC) project to address the increasing socially deviant behaviour among adolescents.Vijayan is also the founder of the Police Youth Football Academy, a football programme for youth.His story serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversities in life. His greatness lies in the fact that he didn't just pull himself out of his misery but is also serving the society with great distinction.
