PDF Editor FAQ

How does Germany manage to keep education free for all (including foreigners) while the United States burdens the young with heavy college debt?

Because the notion of higher education is understood all differently in Germany and the US.USA Version:The thing is that most colleges are for profit colleges in the US. And even many state colleges charge a high tuition fee for those who can afford it. This is because college in the US differs a lot from uni in Europe. The pics above show it. You have park like structures in your university, the dorms are nice, a huge sports program with professional athletes…. You spend your life on campus, there are all sorts of activities. And when you are not enjoying life, you get teaching.Meanwhile, education in Germany is like this.Ruhr Uni Bochum; basically the shittiest design on the best location in Western Europe. I could cry. Fun fact, the big auditorium (right center) is nuke proof, so much concrete.University Hospital Mannheim (my uni). Not fancy at all.You get taught, that’s it. You gotta do a lot of self-study, no prof runs behind you. You either do your work on your own or fail. Nobody to take your hand. You find your own accomodation, uni sports are all on recreational level and often organised by the students themselves.Seriously, I prefer this approach. You are functional adults, act like ones. If I want school to continue I would have crashed my grades and repeated classes. You learn a lot more about self-discipline if you do your work on your own motivation. You learn organisation of housing, events etc. a lot better if you do it yourself. You have far more freedoms. And duties. Basically, a nice way to enter adulthood. And I think that the educational aspect should be free of charge for anyone. The entire stuff around it should not be free. If you want to live in fancy dorms, pay up. If you want a sports team, pay up. Lavish gardens, pay up. It is not the duty of the taxpayer to provide that, he should provide the funding for good schools that select the best candidates for that invested money.Thats the other thing about Germany. Not everyone can study for free. Only those with a high-school diploma called Abitur (worth more than your average highschool diploma) will be able to study (there are some opportunities for those without but generally you need Abitur). And only half the kids get the Abitur. That means a large portion is seriously disadvantaged and may not see a uni as a student but only as a taxpayer. Are you willing to tell American kids that from now on, all your grades matter whether you get a free college education? Because even for the worst student, if you can pay, a college will take you. Not in Germany. No chance if you are the son of a banker or plumber, if you are dumb and don’t have the grades, you either have to go private or bust.Another thing is that since the last decade, German unis have noticeably increased the pace of learning. Many students have to finish fast and get into the job world. You may select different programs but then you are quite limited in what you want to choose. If you fancy to study a language and a science, you need to make it work and get all the courses you need. You cannot typically take anything you really fancy but have a set of things you have to cover and work around your timetable to attend other classes you want to sit too.A lot of the more sought-after programs have further restrictions on them. There is the thing called NC, numerus clausus. Basically a point score which determines the lowest score that yielded an acceptance into the course for that last semester intake. You can have a score from 1,0 - 4,0 and the lower, the harder. For medicine, it is typically 1,2 for one of the quotas (medicine is given out by best high-school diploma and personal interview with the uni). Many other courses like law, business management at the more sought after unis will have them.Edit: It has come to my attention that most colleges in the US aren’t for profit. Thanks for the attention to my mistake. It however does not take away that most colleges are having much higher costs than equivalent German universities or FHs.

My daughter takes the bus home, but misses it because her teacher keeps the class after school as punishment. What can I do or say to the principal?

Yeah I'm very late to this conversation and I don't care.I was set to graduate in 2009. (I ended up graduating 3 months early, this becomes important later.)I was a very difficult student. Mostly because I get bored really easily due to my comprehension skills being really high. I also didn't care at all about my grades or to show off how much I really knew or how intelligent I am. (I still don't.)Anyway. This led to A LOT of detention. None of which I EVER went to. Mostly for failure to do homework, and “being off task” (I wrote a novel from middle school until I graduated)I had several teachers ( one of whom was married to the superintendent) swear up and down that they wouldn't allow me to graduate until all of my “time” was made up. (6 years worth of “doubled” time.) They told me this in 7th grade. I looked my teacher dead in the eye and said “uh huh. Sure”In 2009 I consulted a lawyer. Who called the state. The state said that as long as I met the State’s minimum requirements, the school had zero grounds to hold my diploma and refuse my graduation. This news pissed off the school. Because I stood up to the school.Fast forward to my oldest child's first year of school in 2016. (Kindergarten) while we were living in California. They assigned homework In Kindergarten. I refused to force my child to do the homework. This pissed off the teacher. Who looked me dead in the eye and said (in front of other parents and the students) “Blank’s failure in school will be your fault, and it's parents like you who don't care that make kids fail.”I immediately took this to the principal. Explained the situation and calmly requested the teachers job. At no point was I rude to her. My child wasn't failing or struggling. This was uncalled for, and the principal agreed. However, because of tenure, firing a teacher would very difficult. Which said teacher was aware of. As are all of them.So I asked for a meeting. With her, my ex wife (wife at the time) the principal and guidance counselor (she would act as a mediary) getting said meeting proved to be very difficult. As teachers were not required to be in the building until 8 am and they report directly to their classroom (the exact time school started) and the office would not know if they were in the building until after 8 am. Not would they be required to meet with me after school. Or during lunch. (Working lunches are apparently not a thing, and they could leave as soon as their last student was either picked up or on the bus. Which had to be done with in 15 minutes.) This means I had zero ability to meet with any teacher in a reasonable manner. My response to that was this: “so you're telling me that 1) you have zero accountability and if a teacher and have no way of knowing rather or not a teacher is in my child's classroom at 8 am. So they are possibly unsupervised, and will remain so until you do a classroom check. IF you bother to do one, and 2) meeting with this or any other teacher is impossible. Without disrupting the students, which could possibly harm their ability to learn that day. Since that is the case, I will be disenrolling my child and will instead enroll them in a private school in our state of record. Of which we still hold residency as a military family, and they should be expecting a call from an attorney.”Schools hate when parents stand up to them. They hate when students stand up to them. It needs to happen more often.Edit. So I had someone make a suggestion on editing and well make this flow better. However they tried to sneak something in. I DID graduate early. I hold a Highschool diploma. Not a GED. Which even if I did hold a GED so what? I got my diploma through a program in the military as I stated. With an option to go straight into college.Further edit. Thank you for the views, comments, and edit attempts.

What are the most insane things that American tourists do abroad?

Searching for Auschwitz in front of the seat of the German Government.A summer two years ago I rode home after work on my bicycle and stopped at a traffic light right in front of German Reichstag. This is in middle of Berlin, which is the capital of Germany and home of over 3.5 million people, actually over 4 million during WW2.Here I was approached by three pretty young ladies from the East coast, probably college students doing the “European Tour”.Conversation:“Sorry, you know where the concentration camp is?”(Yeah, we live in a globalized world, everybody speaks English, why bothering with asking?)“Well, the Holocaust Memorial is just around the corner, go straight, turn right…”“No, no we do not mean the memorial, we mean the concentration camp.”“Mmh, you want to see an exhibition about Third Reich? Jewish museum? Gestapo Headquarters in Wilhemstraße?”NO, WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE REAL CONCENTRATION CAMP. Don’t you know it, Hitler burnt Jews there.(Is this a bad joke? A hidden camera somewhere? Could they really possibly think that there was only one death camp and Hitler liked the smell of burnt corpses to add some spice to his lunch and put it in walking distance to his home? In the capitol, with several million people around it? Open mass murder in Tiergarten? Direct view from Reichstag to hundred of thousands of people getting tortured? Go away girls, this is creepy, you are creepy.)Ok,…mmh, ….mmh. I think you mean Auschwitz. That is in Poland, you know. That is not even in Germany. And there is no big city close by, they kind of hid these camps, you know? Normal people did not know what happened in them.Oh, really? Can we go there now and be back tomorrow, we are leaving for Rome tomorrow, you know.No. Definitely not. Bye Girls…INSANEEdit 1: I thought the insanity of the whole conversation does not need to be explained. But the comments focusing on distances in Europe and how far Auschwitz is from Berlin or the fact that I was asked in English as a German person in Germany shows the very urgent need for explanation.Germans are not relaxed about Holocaust. Absolutely not. If you asked the German population about an adequate punishment for people making one of these disgusting Selfies in a concentration camp making fun of mass murder and post it in the Internet I think the outcome will be something like “5 years in prison in an isolation cell”. Serious. (Edit: Last year there was a German sent to prison for 6 months for doing a Hitler salute in public. Just so you know). Some days ago Donald Trump wrote in the guestbook of Yad Vashem in Israel: “It is a great honor to be here with all of my friends. So amazing + will never forget.” This caused a huge discussion in Germany with hundreds of peoples commenting the newspaper articles about it. Yes. In Germany.Germans hate hate hate it, when Americans think the Memorials of Holocaust are some kind of Disneyland. They killed 1000 people a day here with a specially designed toxic gas? Germans are so inventive and efficient, amazing. They put 500 people in this small cell? Oh Germans are so well organized, I am loving it. Can I buy a SS uniform here I really like the design. It was manufactured by Hugo Boss. So it is like a Hugo Boss suit, haha. So well cut.NO NO NO NO NO. Never ever say anything in this direction. People might think you are a psychopathic US Nazi who supports mass murder and not a nice American who just wants to be polite in a very awkward way.And at the end just a little information:The deportation of people in Third Reich and the Konzentrationslager (KZ) were organized by a special department in Berlin in the beginning and in Oranienburg later. There were around 1000 prison-like concentration camps to concentrate people. In these camps you could survive some months before you starved or died because of diseases or exhaustion. Furthermore there were the 7 death camps, designed to exterminate people by direct killing. People were on lists to get gassed, so they had not more than days or weeks until it was their turn. And last there were some special purpose camps like Theresienstadt which were for propaganda. Propaganda means spreading faked film material and pictures with smiling people, but partly it really was better as they for example invited a delegation of the red cross to check on the camp. In Theresienstadt you had some chances too survive longer, but Propaganda was stopped in the 40ies so these locations became as bad as the others. All seven death camps were and are in Poland. The reason for this is that Poland had a huge share of the jewish European population and the Nazis wanted to empty the jewish Ghettos as fast as possible. Auschwitz was the biggest extermination camp and grew into three camps (Auschwitz Stammlager, Birkenau, Labour camp Monowitz) and is the most known. The area around Auschwitz was made extraterritorial so it officially belonged to German Reich territory even before the future of occupied Poland was decided.Hitler never burnt any Jews by himself, he never visited a concentration camp and he never showed much interest in the actual organization of the KZ or even of Holocaust. For further information read here Nazi concentration camps - Wikipedia and here Extermination camp - WikipediaHere is a map with the biggest concentration camps during Third Reich. Blue is the territory of the German Reich. The star indicates the location of the central organization agency in Berlin. “Vernichtungslager” means extermination camp.Edit 2:This answer keeps getting comments. A lot of comments. I started answering comments and thankfully other people, too, but there are so many now and sometimes they even repeat themselves. So I will just write about what people are commenting and my answers to it:Everybody knows that not all Americans are ignorant buffoons. I lived in the USA, have an American Highschool Diploma, even started College in USA, I am working with US Americans and some are my friends. So please stop telling me and all other people here that not all of you are like this. WE KNOW THAT.There are insane tourists from every country. The insanity is different but it is still insanity. If somebody asks me about the insanity of German tourists I have some stories to tell. But this question was not about German tourists.Yes, there was/is a small concentration camp close to Berlin. Sachsenhausen is on the map I posted. But Sachsenhausen has normal opening hours like every museum in this world. Concentration camps were built to keep people in, so they work well for keeping tourists out, too. I wrote in the beginning of my questions that the whole conversation took place after work. So it was later than 6 pm. Concentration camp is closed. And I by the way even mentioned it to the girls, what I must have forgotten. A friend of me who I talked with when this answer went viral reminded me of this.I wrote that Germans are not relaxed about Holocaust. I meant they are not relaxed when people are acting like ignorant idiots or Nazis. I did not mean or write that Germans are not able to make jokes about Hitler, Third Reich or even Holocaust. That’s COMEDY. I have a Jewish friend who is a great Hitler imitator and I have German friends who are great Hitler imitators. I really hope the devil makes Hitler see how his precious Germans make fun of him together with their Jewish friends. My whole story here is about IGNORANCE not about Comedy. Thanks to the Quora Power Users who made this answer going viral, the story is maybe more important than I thought in the beginning.Last edit:I now disable the comment function. I edited the information part again and included insights from the comments. Thank you for some great discussions, but I cannot continue moderating 100+ comments.
