Brief Overview:1989 Assembly elections: Janata Dal-208, BJP-57, BSP- 13SP founded on 4th October 1992The Babri Masjid demolition took place on 6th December 1992Under Article 356, the BJP government was dismissed by the centre due to alleged involvement in demolition.1993 Assembly elections: SP-109, BSP-67, BJP- 177SP formed the government with support from BSP and Mulayam became the chief minister of UP in 1993.But due to ideological differences the alliance broke and on 2nd June, 1995 BSP withdrew their support and the government fell. Many attempts were made by SP to address the issues but both the parties failed to reach common ground. The SP workers and MLAs were furious over the situation and they stormed the state guest house on Mirabai Road, Hazratganj, merely 2.5 kms from CM’s residence.What happened afterwards, not much is available in media. The BSP workers in the common hall quickly closed the main door but it was broken opened by the mob. Then BJP MLA Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, who was present, is widely believed to have stepped in to protect Mayawati against possible physical assault by the SP leaders and workers. She was forced to lock herself in a room. The mob thrashed the BSP workers and atleast 5 of them were taken to the CM’s residence. They were forced to sign papers declaring their support to Mulayam. Many of the BSP MLAs were so scared that they even signed blank papers.At the guest house many BSP MLAs escaped from the mob and took refuge in Mayawati’s room. Lalchand, who was personal guard of BSP MLA RK Chaudhary closed the room from inside. But the unruly mob reached there and was trying to break open the door, at the same time cussing and throwing casteist remarks. They were also shouting about what will be done to her(Mayawati) once the door opens.Now two police officers, Vijay Bhushan(SHO Hazratganj) and Subhash Singh Baghel (SHO VIP) intervened and pushed the mob away. They held their ground in the corridor so that no one could pass, but many of the police officers were mere spectators and didn’t try to do anything. Then Lucknow SSP O P Singh, who is now the state DGP, was criticised for not taking enough steps to prevent the violence.After that electricity and water supply to the guest house was stopped. The DM reached the guest house moments later and tried to control the situation. He ordered lathi-charge on SP workers and forced them out of the guest house, only the MLAs remaining there. As a result a transfer order was issued to the DM at 11 pm.A large no. of security forces reached there after the intervention of the Governor and many BJP leaders.Only then the situation came under control.Brahm Dutt Dwivedi was later shot dead in Farrukhabad district in February 1997. Mayawati considered him as her brother and never fielded any candidate against him in elections. She even rallied for him despite him being a BJP leader.
