What is your review of the Doctor Who episode 'The Tsuangra Condundrum', season 11 episode 5?
Before I talk about the episode, I want to stress that this all my opinion and so naturally, may not align with your own. Which is totally fine we’re allowed to have our own opinions, even if they are not the same as yours.Ok the, The Tsuranga Conundrum….So the episode starts with the gang looking around a junkyard planet with metal detectors, for…um…something. Honestly what are they actually looking for? Not that it really matters because its never brought up again (but would probably made for a more entertaining episode). Anyway they end up accidentally detonating a landmine.Fortunately an ambulance ship just so happens to be passing over head. So they’re all beamed up. The Doctor actually seems to be affected by her injury, at least to begin with anyway. This makes her very vulnerable (not a bad idea) and our monster of the week is draining the ship’s systems, including the life support, which adds real tension for our characters. So like Arachnids in the UK before it, a pretty good setup. But unfortunately, once again it comes off feeling like the first draft of the script. So we have a tried and tested formal, in the classic base-under-siege storyline (a staple of the Troughton era) and a monster that is draining an ambulance ship’s power supply, whilst full of patients needing attention. All pretty promising stuff so far. But the monster, the Pting is a little, adorable, pudgy creature that survives by consuming energy (a fact the Doctor takes practically the whole episode to figure out). So essentially Nibbler from Futurama then. This for me severely ruined any sort of tension I was feeling up to this point, as I couldn’t take it seriously. As usual, each episode is populated with its own characters, which the gang interacts with. So not only do you have to give our guest cast their own character development, you also have to our gang something to contribute to the story. This is a tough challenge in itself. But when you have a full quartet as your TARDIS team, quite often someone is going to be underserved, and for the 5th time this series, Yaz is that someone. Mandip Gill always gives a good performance but she really isn’t given anything to do, outside of asking questions and generally being a sponge for the Doctor’s rambling info-dumps. Graham and Ryan, on the other hand are given more great development. Graham becomes even more endearing to the audience, when he assists in the birth of the pregnant bloke (I’ll talk about him in a moment), even though he has no idea what he’s doing but will give it a go because, and I quote has “seen call the midwife” and Ryan gives more explanation as to why he was raised by his gran (Grace) and why his dad was absent from her funeral at the end of The Woman Who Fell to Earth. This is all good to stuff but it could have been written better and was also not the time to discuss to bring it up, as it really ruins the momentum. Now obviously, the reason why Ryan’s dad is shoehorned it this scene was clearly so Ryan can relate to the pregnant man subplot. So I suppose I should discuss the guest cast. We have,Yoss (pregnant man) - I didn’t mind him, although he could have looked a bit more alien. But it’s interesting to explore different alien physiology.Eve (the general) - I like the fact that she knew of the Doctor, or has at least heard the legends of her. I also liked the aspect of her having this “pilot’s heart” syndrome where she had to keep her adrenaline up, even although it meant she was going to die at the end.Durkas (the engineer) - I liked the inferiority complex he has with his sister, Eve who is a renowned pilot and warhero, while he being an engineer, is always overshadowed by her.Ronan (the android) - A nice addition and could’ve actually contributed something to the story, as no living organism is able to touch the Pting but, he, being synthetic could have. Of course the Pting would also try to eat him because of this as well. But didn’t so he ended up being useless.Mabli (female nurse) - I liked the idea of the inexperienced nurse, that needs to find her courage and prove herself. But I don’t know if it’s the actress, Lois Chimimba, or the way she was written but I found her really annoying.Astos (male nurse) - He served his purpose as the experienced medical professional that informs the Doctor (and us) of what’s going on then promptly dies in the most stupid of horror clichés. He does share good chemistry with Jodie and are genuinely interesting.Chibnall is capable of writing good one-off characters, as demonstrated in The Woman Who Fell to Earth, the security guard getting a tiny bit of development before his death was a lovely touch. And again here, he is able to craft likeable characters, who while certainly couldn’t hold a two-parter together, confined to this one episode are perfectly serviceable. And while I get what Chibnall was trying to go for, by making the Pting this weird, adorable little creature that is just absentmindedly putting everyone in harms way as opposed to the stereotypical deadly creature we initially think it’s going to be. It just doesn’t work for me. We could have had a far better episode had he stuck with this premise, perhaps implementing a Weeping Angel, Vashta Nerada or a brand new terrifying monster that would raise the stakes and would truly emphasise the Doctor’s warning at the end of the last episode about “not being able to guarantee that they’ll be safe”.One thing I think this episode does do pretty well, is that it has a pretty good sense of humour. Particularly with Graham helping in the birth. However the juxtaposition of the Pting’s design and the race against time is where this episode suffers the most.Wait there’s a race against time? Yeah, so there’s this self destruct mechanism that if a message isn’t responded to from the hospital space station HQ thingy, said self destruct mechanism will start a countdown. Yeah it felt pretty last minute in the episode too. So of course it goes into the coutdown after the Doctor essentially pulls a Solo.Reading through this review, you’d think I hated this episode. But honestly I don’t. As it stands, I was still entertained enough by it. Which considering the sole purpose of any film or tv show is to do exactly that, I think its fair to say it’s not that bad. But that’s the problem, it wasn’t that bad. When you’ve only got 10 episodes, you really can’t afford to have many “meh” episodes. We’re now half way through the series and so far the only episodes that truly stand out are The Woman Who Fell to Earth and Rosa. This is not a good sign, however thankfully things do start to pick back up towards the end.
