PDF Editor FAQ

Would the public school system benefit from having fewer and larger elementary schools?

There’s two opposing opinions on that. I personally love small, intimate rural schools where there is a true sense of a collaborative learning community, and teamwork prevails. My dream is to once again work in one of these smaller schools and teach there for decades and become integrated within the community. The opposite theory is that larger schools save money, because there’s one building for thousands, bills are consolidated. Resources can be shared and are centralized. This is the trend in Maine, where I’m from. There has been mandates forcing small, rural school districts to consolidate. This poses practical problems such as the large geographical distance in some regional school units, where Kindergarden kids are on the bus for hours a day. It’s also not ideal for little kids to be around teenagers, because as everyone knows they don’t make the best role models at time.

Former bullied kids, what did your bullies do when they met you as an adult?

Not nearly an adult yet…Grade school was horrible, and it only got worse in junior high. Small town rumors and lies got around quick. It started around third grade. Just verbal, kids being kids, or so I thought. Fourth grade, my lunch got thrown on the floor, and I got in trouble for reacting. In fifth grade, there was a new girl (also the first year of junior high). My one “close” friend and I took her under our wings. They teamed up on me, sent me death threats, told me to kill myself, told me how horrible of a human I am. Sixth grade was more of the same torture, this time by teachers and the administration too. It looked like it was getting better in seventh grade. My cyber security team placed third in semi finals out of 400, moving us up to nationals in Washington DC- all expenses paid for by the Air Force and Northern Grumman. We actually sent two teams, our other team placed second and tormented us about it, until we placed second in the nation in our final Nationals round. All seemed well, until the last night, when a teammate held a pillow over my head, long enough for me to go limp. To this day, I’m not sure what happened, I don’t really remember, I don’t really want to. Because of such events, I was lost. I thought I didn’t want to live anymore. I finally got the courage to not only miss class, but to tell my guidance counselor that I wasn’t going to wake up the next morning and I hoped I was able to make some positive impact on her. She told me to go back to class and to stop looking for attention before she wrote me up for cutting class. The majority of my peers moved on to the regional local (typical) high school. As an attempt to escape this madness, I applied to a county vocational academy for health sciences. This academy ranks top 50 in the state, and even higher in SAT, ACT and college readiness. I had a 30% chance give or take of making it in. Well, there were 80 spots and about 350–400 applicants- and I got my letter of admittance a few months later. This was a huge deal for me, I’d be the only one from my district going as they only accept one. My teachers were so proud, my school district’s board of education was beyond thrilled (bc it meant more funding and makes the school look better to transfer students). A teacher hung my letter of admittance on my locker. I got death threats, was told I didn’t deserve it, I’d just fail out, I probably cheated on the entrance exam because there’s no way I was smart enough.Fast forward about 9 months. I hadn’t seen anyone from my little hometown despite still living there. It’s a tradition to stop by the junior high after graduating at least once in high school. I decided that I was ready to go back about halfway through freshman year. Keep in mind I was at a top academy, had recently been promoted to co-supervisor of a mutual first aid squad and search and rescue, was the youngest EMS instructor in the United States and had been offered a paid internship from Northrop Grumman/USAF to secure their networks- government regulated networks.I saw one of my bullies. She decided to stop and talk to me, she was at our regional school, not majoring, no honors or AP. The “easy route”.I saw my old principal, who for the past 4 years told my everything was my fault. It was obviously my fault that people told me kill myself, duh. He looked at me, I hadn’t changed much, maybe a little more muscular due to my line of work, and of course I was wearing scrubs because of the academy. He made a snide, demeaning comment about the scrubs. This a**h*** had the nerve to come up to me and continue to be a d***.I guess some things just dont change.

What do most people mean when they call a person a conservative or liberal?

Imagine a number line with numbers 0 through 10:On the left side of the line, at the number “0” is the word “individual.” On the right side, at the number 10, is the word “United Nations.”Number 9 is “U.S. Federal Government.”Number 1 is “family.”After that are things like “neighborhood, city, county, state, region, etc…”You get the idea… the higher up the number line you go, the more people who are involved. Now think of a problem someone may have. Any problem will do.“The school my kids go to isn’t doing a very good job.” There. That’s our example problem. Now think of a solution to that problem. The placement of that solution on the number line is the difference between conservatives and liberals, in the U.S. at least, in contemporary political discourse. The most conservative answer to our example problem would be, “they’re your kids… you figure it out, even if it means homeschooling them.”The most liberal answer would be at #9 on the scale: get the U.S. Federal Government to solve the problem. (When it comes to schools, not many people take it to the U.N. level. That’s reserved for things like environmentalism.)It’s possible to be a conservative on some issues, and a liberal on others.
