PDF Editor FAQ

How should I properly study for IB exammes?

Head’s up, sorry this is so long, I just kinda kept writing and didn't realize how long it was til I posted it :)I graduated this past year and got my IB diploma so I can say it's possible. I didn't take bio (I did chem) so all I can say about that is my friends who took the class hated it (the teacher wasn’t the greatest) and they went through 3x5 note cards like crazy. However, onto your other courses:History: One of the best things you can do for history is find out the major topics that will be on each paper. Then, look at the number of essays you will have to write on each topic. On paper 1, there are two short questions about a political cartoon, two paragraph length questions on some documents, and one long essay where you need to synthesize it all together. Overall, make sure you look at what you will be required for each paper and then formulate a strategy for tackling the paper. As already stated, ibsurvival.com will be your friend. Also, my teacher recommended we each know a couple good quotes that could be applicable to many different topics, or at least ones that you could weave into your essays. It helps show that you really understand the subject and gives you more points.English: Know the books and know them extremely well. The questions usually aren’t too difficult to answer, but the more you know about the books the easier it will be to connect different parts of the books together. Like history, look up the kinds of questions you will be asked. You should have read (at least) three books from IB’s list, but you only have to use two of them on the comparative essay. Pick those two books you will be using and know them extremely well. Know some of the main concepts from the other book(s) in case you can't find a good question that relates the books you chose. But that’s simply a backup and you should be fine just knowing the two. Also, if you haven’t talked about this or learned it, learn the Fab 5 for the analysis paper. If you look up IB English Fab 5 you will find them (audience, purpose, content, context, stylistic devices…). This is an excellent way to analyze the two text types you will be given for the other paper.Math: Math was weird for me because I was allowed to take AP Calculus BC and take the exam for IB Math SL. However, it’s just like any other math course: practice, practice, practice. You will be given a formula sheet for at least one of the papers (the other you don’t really need it if it’s not provided) so look it up and become familiar with it so you don’t waste time hunting for the right formula. Also, make sure you understand the concepts because it will be a lot easier and score you more points to give the general idea of the problem than to throw numbers into equations and hope you get the right answer.Spanish: If you haven't done your spoken component yet, make sure you become very comfortable with the topic(s) that you will be talking about. At least for my class, our teacher told us well beforehand that we would be talking about either health issues or the use of technology. We could prepare notes beforehand for each topic, then once we were given our picture we could just pick the right page of notes and add a little extra in context of the image. It wouldn’t hurt to prepare your basic intro that you will use no matter what the picture is. Now for the papers…the reading comprehension paper isn't too bad. There’s one text that is very easy, two that are at your level of Spanish, and one that is above your level (level of the class and what you should have learned). One of the biggest things to work on is figuring out the meaning of words based on context. You may have no idea what the word is, but at the very least you should be able to figure out if it has a good or bad connotation. For the other paper, just make sure you are comfortable writing in Spanish. The topic isn’t usually difficult, but make sure you practice beforehand because little mistakes will cost you points.TOK: There is no exam for TOK, but there is the essay and the presentation. The presentation is the easier part in my opinion because your teacher grades it. However, make sure it follows the rubric. I’m sure ibsurvival has that as well. Have fun with TOK. I gave out candy in my presentation, other students had us get up and do an activity, and others were simply very interesting to listen to. Make sure you engage the audience. Feel free to ask them questions and use their comments to help further your presentation or strengthen the point you’re making. Since my presentation was on ethics, I had the class answer versions of the trolley problem. Some of them brought up the point that the different scenarios lead to different outcomes, which meant the problem was flawed. However, that is exactly what the different scenarios are supposed to do - show that our ethics are based on the context of the situation. Overall it was a fun presentation and I got a decent grade on it. Now with the paper, make sure your logic in your argument is sound. You can make grandiose claims, just make sure you support why you think it is correct. Other than that, just make sure you understand exactly what the question is asking and only answer that question. You also cannot modify the question in any way, at least to begin with. You can modify the question a little bit after you have answered the original question as long as you explain why modifying the question will be more important than the original question.Overall, it’s very doable but it will be hard. Make sure you get groups of friends together to study, too. To study for English, about 10 of us went to a McDonald’s and talked over the different books we had read. It was very useful because everyone has a different opinion on each book. Also, if your teachers aren't very good, try to find other teachers at your school that can help you out. Don’t feel bad for your teacher - you’re trying to pass exams that no one else at your school has and you’ll want every bit of help you can get. Try to find resources online. For chemistry there was a series of videos made by a teacher named Thornley that we used so much that we’re pretty sure we learned more from the videos than from our teacher. IB is a great program and very much worth it, so do your best. Even if you don’t get the diploma, remember that you made good friends from it and you learned how to learn. You don't need a piece of paper to tell you that you did your best to learn everything you could and had fun doing it.Good luck!

What should I keep in mind before moving to Allen Career Institute, Kota, for coaching classes?

This is going to be REALLY LONG, but these r the little things i wish someone had told me back then, i have a 3 year experience(11,12th n a drop year) at allen, kota,I hope i can help. :)SELF STUDY - kota provides u with the best teachers, they will take care of the concepts very well, but dont just rely of the class, u need to read on your own, make notes , revise them.PRACTICE a LOT of questions - This one is VERY important…i noticed this myself..you might think u can complete more amount of chapters theory instead of doing the questions, but solving questions enable u to know the IMPORTANT and most frequently asked questions..so that whenever u study the chapter next, it strikes to u like…oh yes!, they ask questions about this thing a lot.. n u automatically pay more attention….My mom(she is a doctor herself) said that u should practice about a 1000 questions a day..at first i thought this was a lot.. it isnt really… u can solve a lot of questions that do not need solving, bio, inorganic and organic chemistry..n as u r a dropper, u dont need to go according to what they r teaching in the classes, practice random questions..try just going through the questions before reading the chapter..that’ll help u to know what u must focus on while reading.PREVIOUS YEARS PAPERS… Do not underestimate them.. u get a lott lott of questions from the previous year lot.. allen provides u with a book for previous 15 years papers.. but they usually give it to u around december… just try to get one from the begining itself.. i guess u can find it at a cyber cafe at friends paradise(you’ll know this place once u go to kota).i was very reluctant at solving the previous papers when i first gave the exam..my mom asked me to, n i would always be like..” ye questions toh puch lie na firse kyu puchenge”.. but that is just NOT the case.. about 20–30 questions can be just as exact from the previous year question bank.. i realised this after solving the papers in during my drop year.. there were a lot of questions in my first paper.. n 20–30 questions make a LOT of difference to your final score.n there was a point when i wud see a question n i knew when n in which exam it was asked..lol that kinda gave me confidence. :PNCERT - They are the BEST TEXT BOOKS for AIPMT…. u need to read them like a hundred timessss…get a highlighter, a red pen...play holi with your ncerts.. concentrate while reading, if u dont understand a line, dont underestimate it, every word in the ncert is important, n u must try your best to understand it, ask teachers or friends for help.. but get it done.u might not realize what great points u missed in the first reading… everytime i read the ncerts, i wud discover a new point, or realize how a question should’ve been answer that i did wrong once. And im not just talking about the biology ncerts here, u need to read the chemistry n physics too, but if that is too much.. what i did was solve all the questions from the chemistry n physics ncerts.. DO THIS!!.. again, u get a lotttt of direct questions from the ncerts, exact data ,exact words.. just the exact question u will find in the exams..All the questions at the back of each chapters and also the little excercies they give u in the chapters.. and alsoo all the examples..solve them too.At allen , they will give u modules ( their text books ) to read, and it has a LOT of extra stuff, which i never found very helping.. content wise they are great, they have put in a lot of effort in making those, but i kinda never really read all of those, n i dont think anyone can.. they r too much, u dont need to do phd in botony or zoology, all u need is to clear the exam.I did try reading them during my first two years at allen, trust me it was just too much, i couldnt really recollect anything, all that evaporated so easily, n u even tend to read them n ignore ncerts bcz whever there will be a test at allen, they’ll give u a syllabus for it, which will have only a few chapters,u might just read those n recollect them in the next text, but trust me in a long run, n when u have the whole syllabus of 11th 12th to recollect in the main exam, they wont stick..Instead, i suggest, get the ncerts on your tips, dont feel bad if u dont score that well in the tests bcz u didnt read the modules, it doesnt matter in the bigger picture..make class notes instead, specially for subjects like physiology, that have mechanisms, u need to understand the mechanisms very well bcz there can be tricky questions regarding those in aiims or even aipmt… n plz dont just go mugging up those wierd mile long names in the taxonomy part, and the anatomy morpho in botany.. it’ll confuse you a lot, practice *Quality over Quantity*, just do the ncerts for such chapters, n if incase there is a special topic which is asked a lot in your state exam, do it from the module, otherwise dont.. u might not score well in the tests, but u will in the main exam, which have at least 80% questions (biology) from the ncerts, this is a well known fact..n if u r solving the question regularly, u will cover those extras which r frequently asked too, there wont be a need to mug up the theory for it.FORMULAE-i sucked at these.. lol..there were times when i knew i could solve the questions, but couldnt recall the formula.. lol.. n i was stuck even for the easiest of questions.Just make short notes for all the formulae, or yes, allen also provides u with handbooks that have them in a concise form, jugadofy that too if u can ;)keep revising them often, they’ll b on your tips by the end… n when u practice a lot of questions, u know your stuff better than just mugging up the formulae.ATTEND THE CLASSESwell, this is a must, though in my drop year i didnt attend a lot of classes because i was a former allen student, if i had attended a lecture of a particular teacher already, i didnt go back to sit there, listen the same old lecture n make the same old notes, i rather stayed back n self studied. But like u said, u r just joining allen, u better attend all the classes, allen has a fab faculty for their subjects, you’ll love the classes.. they teachers r experts in their subjects.. n as u’ll b in achievers(has former allen students), u’ll know what the upcomming teacher is like.. the whole class gets excited for the next teacher,, by that level of excitemnt u can judge how great the teacher is n how imp is to attend his class. some of the best faculty is Saharan sir(inorg), Ashish Bajpai sir(physio), Mohit chaurasiya sir(ecology), well the list is very long, i had many favorite teachers.. you’ll have ur own.JOIN AKASH’S TEST SERIES..these guys have a greattt question bank, most of which have ncert roots, you’ll love the papers.. they very high yield in the main exam !!.. i liked them more than the tests at allen.U will need to go to DAV school there at talwandi i guess for the tests, but that wont be an issue(shared autos or the boys have their bicycles, bicycles r a luxury for a kota student :P), ur test dates might clash, but i have even given two tests in a day.. doesnt really matter, u need to practice for those 3 hours a lot, u can manage this.GIVE ALL THE TESTS -there are NO excuses to miss a test.. never do that…. never say that u would rather study at your room than waste three hours at the test.. thats the dumbest thing one cud do… Give as many tests as u can, even if u r not prepared for it, u r a dropper, u can sure deal with a paper without specially preparing for it.REVISE -Do not forget that its not the allen tests that u r preparing for, its the main exam.. aipmt u need to study for.. dont pile up stuff, dont just do it once n leave… u need to keep a track on everything.. the 11th the 12th.. the chapters u knew well, the ones u need to work on..revise the older chapters on your own, dont just follow the class schedules..Always prepare your mind for the main exam.. you need to collect everything by the end of the year…u need it all in the main exam..not just a few chapters.. there r about 80–90 chapters overall(phy chem bio)..Allen also gives u a Weightage chart (get this too from that cyber cafe at friends paradise).. it tells u which chapters r most imp for which exam.. which part contains the most questions..prepare yourself according to it.. dont just skip a very important chapter.. u need to cover it all.YOUR MENTAL STATEFor a dropper, this is a very tough time.. u have just a few months of hard work that can change the rest of your life.NEVER LOOSE FOCUS, always always remember… you are there only for your AIPMT..nothing else matters.Kota has a lot of distractions… choose your friends wisely, boys usually tend to get into smoking, drinking, cyber cafe’s r like their tourist destinations,.. there r the prettiest of girls n boys there..u might even fall for one..(but i havnt seen any kota originated relationships to last beyond kota) n if it is the first time u r leaving your house/city..dont go gaga over the new freedom u received, u have a aim here., u will have the money, u will have the resources to distract u.. u need a good control over it.. u need to study a lot, u know there is a lot of competition, n eveyone is working hard..please choose your friends wisely, have people around you who have a healthy competition, i had a friend.. we studied together, no hard feelings if the other one scored better, shared all we knew, helped each other in the weaker areas.. i was lucky i had her… we were enough for each other’s need of a friend. we attended classes together, had kinda similar schedule for studies.. discussed the chapters at the hostel terrace.. n we always kept a check on each other.. that we’re not wasting our times. You can go to the mall n have a pizza sometimes, go for a movie once in a while, listen to music, visit the IL temple if u feel low, just a good quite place..enjoy the cheap street food at kota.. lol trust me they have some great chefs there..for pocket friendly prices… you’ll love it. :PEnjoy the little things, kota will give u heck lot of memories, you’ll learn a lot of life skills, sleep well..yes the mess food will suck, but its okay, wont kill you. n then u always have maggie.. n u’re gonna put on a lot of weight too. :)Always remember to call n talk to your parents n loved ones, they give u the best moral support in times like these.if not whatsapp, deactivate facebook.. it distracts, bcz u r dropping n ur other friends might be getting into college n enjoying themselves, u dont need to know any of this, it wont matter.. its just about a few months that u need to work hard, u will have a future better than them.*DO NOT DATE!!*… take my word, you’re gonna regret this no matter what.. just dont get into the love crap there at kota, there’s a long long way.. you’ll meet great people at your college.. just skip this part for now..thank me later. :PTHE TEST RESULTS-You will have a test almost every sunday.. like i said, never skip them.u will be competing amongst your batch.. which might have around 1500 students.. Try to get a good enough rank, a good rank boosts your confidence like nothing else…motivates u to do more..but u might not be able to get the best of ranks there, dont get depressed, this happens to everyone,..get up n try again..but never forget that it’s not these tests that u r preparing for… your main aim is the final exam… there were times when i had my weaker stuff to clear, i wouldnt study for the test as much, never skipped it though..n the test results didnt bother me at all.one mistake that students do there, is they take those tests so seriously, that they keep mugging on those modules, n forget the ncerts… just to score well in the tests.. n they do score well.. but that might not happen in the main exam.. i have friends who had great ranks at allen, but a very bad aipmt score.. bcz they ignored the ncerts. You will learn to manage everything eventually.**THOSE 3 HOURS..HOW TO ATTEMPT THE PAPER.***I’ll tell u my story, when i first gave the exam in 2k13.. i dont know why, but i decided to start my paper with physics, i sucked at it though, i did a few questions…. there were a few i knew i could, that i had done them a lot of times, but there i just didnt get it right.. i couldnt just leave those questions n move on, n i wasted a LOT of time on those.. which is a BAD decision in the main exam.. n because of which, i didnt get enough time to do biology…i panicked.. i really was on the verge of tears.. the invigilator even got me a glass of water., i rushed, didnt read a few questions well, n screwed biology too. (i took tubectomy for vasectomy n got an answer wrong in that rush, that was so stupid). So never do anything like this.Attempt your biology first, very keenly, read the questions well, n try to do it as early as u can, then do your chemistry followed by physics…MOVE ON if u cannot do a question.. u might spent a lot of time on one question which u wudnt even be sure about instead of which u could’ve done 3 other ones correctly.I’d suggest u fill in the OMR sheet at the end, a few people do it along with solving the paper, but i for myself have realised that i often recollect something while i am doing the other questions, n then i have to fix the answer for the previous questions.. so i always filled my OMR at the end, u can decide on your own how much time u need to do it, n save that much by the end. Some people even screw the filling the OMR part.. it can happen to anyone.. i had a friend who was a topper but had screwed the OMR in so many tests that she couldnt then do anything about.Practice will make u perfect, that is why i suggest u giving all the tests and joining the test series too.Use a ruler, fill the OMR with the help of a ruler to guide u. this helped my friend. If u like to fill the omr after completing each section, then ALWAYS remember what u attempted first, like i did biology questions first, so i had to start filling my ome from Ques. no 91.. from where the biology section starts. n not ques. 1.Dont be nervous, try to be confident before the exam, remind yourself that u have prepared well n u will do great, imagine how happy ur parents n friends will be when u get through the exam..try it whenever u feel depressed(this helps me a lot).Be VERY positive. You’ll do great.Im sorry for the very long answer, i tried to cover the little things that i wish i had known then.I stick a quote written on a post it on my little bed table..“The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard word”Kept me motivated :)BEST OF LUCK!..

What is your favorite personal moment with your teacher?

I have two types of favourite moment with regard to teaching: The feel-good ones (meaningful, memorable, but relaying them somehow makes you feel a bit of a prat) and the “WTF just happened here” ones.I choose to focus on the second type here - I think it’s more entertaining. My first year teaching was at a small rural high school (maybe 200 students, but we shared some facilities with the primary schools in the area) and a steep learning curve, but it gave me some of best anecdotes. Here’s one:My classroom was a pre-fab, with decks on either side and windows that opened out on to said decks. I’d arrived mid-year and later found out they had, so charmingly, rearranged the timetables to give me the most behaviourally challenging classes (a fun little game we call either “Trial By Fire” or “Stick it to the Newbie”, depending on your stress level and seniority).About three weeks in, I was still having trouble with a particularly rambunctious class of 14 - 15 year olds and they knew it. Boy, did they know it.So, when one day they were quiet (for them), I should have been suspicious. Maybe I was tired, maybe I was distracted, I know I was relieved though. For some inexplicable reason, the room was set up such that I had my back to the students when I was sitting at the teacher desk. Short of asking the non-existent maintenance team to move the whiteboards, there was no way around it. Needless to say, I didn’t spend a great deal of time sitting at the desk, but it was necessary while I entered attendance in my computer. For a class that was actively trying *not* to learn, they had smarts. Or, more likely, a smart ringleader and accomplished side-kicks. They knew they had two minutes, tops.I turn around after entering attendance, the next instructions already ghosting my lips and I have NO students. Not a one. The door hadn’t opened - it was in my peripheral vision and I would have seen. However, the windows were open and the curtains were flapping in the breeze.I was frozen, a hundred thoughts running through my mind - “oh, they’re in so much trouble”, “oh, I’M in such big trouble”, “has a teacher ever lost an entire class before?”, “this is going to mean so many apology meetings”, “do the police take missing class reports in the first 24 hours?” etc. I cried. Eventually my brain hamsters started trundling on their wheel again and I thought, “well, they can’t have gone far”.I step out the door and there is no sign of any of them. As I said, this was a rural high school. On one side of the classroom was the rest of the school - about 5 other pre-fabs and semi-permanent structures (they had experienced rapid roll growth) close-by, then basketball courts, the gym, the hall and then the permanent buildings. We were, “stuck out the back”, so to speak. On the other side, close to 20 hectares of sports grounds that merged seamlessly into literal paddocks. They definitely weren’t out that way, so I head towards the main part of the school, tempted to stick my hands in my pockets and whistle innocently *nothing to see here*. No sign of them. 18 of the little.. umm… pranksters, gone.I pass another teacher… “Seen my class?” *laughs nervously*. “No, what have they done now?” This class was infamous, evidently. “No, I mean have you SEEN my class? They’re kinda, well, gone”. A brief, increasingly incredulous conversation ensues, ending with that teacher heading off to the office to report the problem and me continuing to search.Five minutes later, the senior management team have assembled, heard my story and started making plans (senior management are big fans of plans). Staff assigned to check certain zones, youth worker contacted (he had the cell numbers of some of the kids), police to be called if we haven’t found them in 10 minutes, that sort of thing. Two minutes after that, I head towards my classroom to check my assigned zone and lock the room (I’d left in a bit of a hurry) and I can see a class full of heads in there, as I cross the basketball courts. As I reach the door, there they are. 18 of them, in their assigned seats, acting (and failing) as if nothing is going on. At this point, I start thinking I’ve gone insane. Evidently I’ve lost my mind. A few sheep short in the top paddock, as the locals would say.I’m standing there like an idiot, staring around the room, the only thing I can say is “but, but, but…”If they’d been totally sharp, they’d have left it there. But one of them couldn’t resist bragging, “Should have looked UNDER the deck”I learnt a lot that day. Never turn your back on a class, ever. Never underestimate a group of teenagers. And rural kids don’t mind getting filthy if it means getting one over the newbie teacher.Other noteworthy anecdotes (much briefer, promise)~ Spent hours creating an intricate A3, double sided work-sheet. Illustrations drawn from scratch, full colour, super detailed. I was proud of it. 16 year old male student ate it. Right in front of me. All of it.~ Had to teach an entire period with the whole class under their desks. The earthquake alarms kept being tripped on a stormy day and the kids decided they must stick to the protocol, despite my reading out an explanatory note from the principal.~ Sudden outbreak of a screaming, knockdown fight between two 15 year old girls: “I did NOT sleep with your boyfriend, I just gave him a BJ in the garage”. Alrighty then.
