PDF Editor FAQ

Have you ever had a doctor give you a diagnosis and you just wouldn’t believe them? What did you do?

Where to begin? I had symptoms of overactive thyroid & or menopause for about 5 years. Around the 7 year Mark it became obvious it was interfering with my daily life. So, I see a Dr for the 1st time in 13years ( feel free to lecture me).So I meet my Dr (1st year resident. I see a teaching university, so all is cool). I hand over 5 generations of family health history ( he was seriously excited) my symptoms and I said it's like thyroid & menopause but kinda stranger.DR: let's rule out thyroid &menopause …Dr: I think I'm getting ahead of myself, it could be pheochromocystomaMe: a who a whoa what what …yeah dude, i 'll wait on testingWell 3 days later … I'm in radiology, nuclear medicine, labs. It was pheo. No lie I was just like WTF? Really! 5 months later left adrenal & tumors removed. life changing! My medical adventure gets stranger. So in my follow up body scans, radiology says I have neurotic tonsils & actively necrosinig lymph nodes??. ICK ?? Internal medicine had zero clue what that means & sends me to an ENT. I had/have zero symtons of throat things. My ENT He had a pack of med students & was looking at my scans. All the sudden he stood up.smile on his face & even did “jazz hands" announcing you have tonsil cancer!Funny thing, he was/is excited about my diagnosis. Not how I expected a cancer diagnosis, but once again he was happy to see me. Surgery in 2 weeks, radiation starts in 3 weeks. I'm just rolling with it.My view is if a Dr is engaged & ( like my ENT, or pheo Dr) thrilled to treat you well … you get better care. I'm called “That one" when I attend appointments. Med students mob me asking questions. It's odd, but at least they can learn from me.FYI I waived my HIPPA so my Drs can freely discuss my health to all future Drs.

How will ACA affect career and job choices of young people, and their lives in general?

First and foremost, it’s last call for 2014. If you haven’t signed up for health insurance and want to be covered in 2014, you should go to Health Insurance Marketplace, Affordable Care Act right now and sign up for coverage. You've got just seven days left until the March 31st deadline. The whole point of health insurance is to protect you from massive medical bills that come with illness or injury. None of us are invincible – we all get sick or get into accidents. So for young people, health insurance is about peace of mind. It gives you the freedom to try several jobs until you find the one you love, chase that new idea, or start your own business, without fear that the unexpected will derail your dreams. Before I signed the Affordable Care Act, many young people had difficulty finding affordable health insurance as they were starting their careers. Some were able to get coverage through their employer, but those who couldn’t often went without health insurance altogether. And that’s mostly because too often plans on the individual market were prohibitively expensive, and young people with pre-existing conditions were turned down when they applied for coverage because of their health history.Today, thanks to the health care law, young adults can stay on their parents’ health insurance until they turn 26. Young people can also shop for coverage online through the Health Insurance Marketplace. You can compare plans and benefits and enroll in a plan that fits your budget, and many young people qualify for tax credits to help make coverage even more affordable. In fact, seven in ten single young adults without insurance now may get covered for under $100 a month through the Marketplace. The law also provides new protections and benefits that are especially important for young people. Insurance companies now have to provide free preventive care that will help you stay healthy. They have to provide contraceptive care for women at no extra cost. Insurance companies can’t deny coverage or charge you more because you’ve been sick in the past, and they can’t charge women more than men for the same coverage. So here’s the bottom line. If you want to take a chance and start your own business, or try multiple careers before you settle down, you’re not going to have to wonder whether or not you can do that because you’re worried about maintaining insurance coverage. And that’s what this law is about: health care that’s there for you when you need it; financial protection for you and your family if you get sick; the security of knowing that when life happens, you’ll be protected.

What's something that your doctor or nurse did to you that you won't ever forgive?

I’m a nurse and I worked with many doctors. I had a neurological disorder that was known about but I was having new symptoms. I was having trouble with organizing my thoughts, racing thoughts, memory problems, constant head pressure but also felt like I had a constant cold. Drippy nose. I was depressed because my doctors weren’t helping me. I thought I would see a colleague that was a neuropsychologist. He was a trusted doctor amongst our group of professionals. On my appointment day I took about 4 hours worth of testing. The testing was repetitive and meant to bore and frustrate you. Well it worked. I then went in his office and I discussed my health history, increase pressure in my face and head pain that was unrelenting for months… really years but only gotten worse. No pain meds helped. I wasn’t sleeping. I honestly could not stop crying while talking. I just spilled my guts about my health failing and fear of not being able to perform my job well enough. So the end of the appointment comes and he brings my husband in to his office (without asking me). We sit down and he says, “I know what’s wrong with you. You are simply suffering from being a woman. You are doing too much. You need more help around the house. And a gluten free diet would probably help.”It was at that moment I lost all faith in my doctors. I knew at that moment I would no longer trust a doctor again. He had no idea how sick I was. I actually had ruptured the lining around my brain and the pain and stuffiness was because of that. Extremely rare but no one cared to listen to me. I had mentioned having a leak before but was told that I was a nurse which automatically made me a hypochondriac. I got so sick that being upright was extremely painful. I had to stop working and move home with family. Of course I was also going through a divorce too because this doctor painted a picture of me. I’m obviously some kind of weak woman that can’t handle normal life. So this sealed the deal on the demise of my marriage. It took 2 years to get appropriate treatment but I have long lasting effects from not being treated for almost 2 decades. I was always told I was stressed, anxious, depressed, sinus infections, allergies… I was none of those things. I thought I was going crazy. They made me believe I was.I’ve since then had brain surgery but again I will never return to full capacity. I will never work as a nurse again. I’m not sure I could mentally handle it anyways. I would probably drop kick the first doctor that I felt was blowing off a patient. It’s too personal now.I’m a nurse who goes into full on panic mode when I meet a new doctor. I can’t imagine someone not in medicine trying to find an answer.
